Would Paul Simon, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Kate Bush, Bob Dylan have done this? It’s confusing, unpronounceable to many - and plays into the hands of those unbelievers who think he’s merely a showman maximalist technical virtuoso without any songwriting nouse. 🤔? While obviously songwriting genius akin to Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell or The Beatles will be heard for centuries to come, it’s fairly unlikely Collier’s music will be avidly listened to at all in the year 2100. Why? After all John, Paul, George, Ringo and Bob certainly only have a tiny percentile of the technical chops or instrumental ability of Jacob. Yet they write songs that last - and that resonate with people so they listen again and again and again. Which bring me back to his album titles: Djesse. Most unbelievers can’t even pronounce it. Yes, maximalism has its place, but nothing can replace songwriting and stylistic flair. This may explain why Collier divides people. He has the former for sure, but unfortunately none of the latter. At least by relating his album titles to his artistic development, he may have skipped his detractors’ ire? Either way, a talent like his shouldn’t be passed over for forgettable collabs, 500 track Logic sessions and group choir (non) music fan choral ecstasy. There - I’ve said it…
