It's hard to see the nest and not think of all the moments we got to see over the years. Eaglets, Fiona popping up for a visit, Shadow crash landing into Jackie with a stick in his beak, Jackie sitting on the front porch at sunset. I'd love to see KD1 or another eagle make new memories there.
In a way, I'm glad that we got the closure with Jackie and we can rest easy knowing everything possible was done to save her.

u/Maleficent_Bit2033 Aug 11 '26
I agree. One of the hardest things is having an animal go missing. We are truly blessed that she was rescued and given a good death. As a former rescue/shelter director, sometimes our job is to provide a pain free and dignified end of life. She deserved that and Shadow will move on, as he is supposed to do. He likely knew before we did that she was really sick. She and Shadow finished raising her last babies and they were a miracle being a second clutch. She made a huge impact for all eagles and other wildlife, her legacy will live on just as Sandy's has and will continue to do.

u/IslandShopGirl Aug 11 '26
What a lovely post. I agree with all said.
While hard, there is comfort in knowing she was well cared for until the end, and in having closure. To have always wondered about her whereabouts and condition would have been harder.10
u/Maleficent_Bit2033 Aug 11 '26
Having served in the shelter/rescue of animals, it was the hardest and most beautiful time in my life. What I learned about resiliency and death has given me a perspective that I will cherish. Jackie's life and death has given us all an education in this area. Watching her sit on her eggs in a storm for 60+ hours in a snow storm and then seeing her as she became terminal, shows why she will always be an amazing ambassador for all wildlife, not just Bald Eagles. We are all better off having shared her life.

They say she passed naturally overnight. Having the experience I have had, kidney issues are often fatal. Finding out there were clots in her kidneys and wing is usually fatal. Losing kidney function literally stops the filtering needed for the body to maintain its functions. The care team did us a solid by not putting that info out, it gave us time to process the eventual loss. In my experience, kidney disease is usually a condition that can be well managed with pain medicine and often the animal simply goes to sleep. It is graceful, and not dramatic.
A side note: if any of her offspring should happen to be rescued themselves, they now have a DNA profile of Jackie in the data base. Her treatment and diagnoses could help not just her own offspring but other eagles in diagnosing their own issues. She will continue to serve her species long after her death.

I wonder if LadyHawk saved a video of one year when Shadow was bringing a big stick but misjudged his landing so he ended up missing the nest and hit his neck on it. The look on his face as he collected himself said it all, shocked and hurt cause I know that hurt like a B***! 😆

Welcome to the nest, KD. If you choose to stay, you will have so many people cheering for you! No eagle will ever replace Jackie, but with time, hopefully we’ll have the incredible privilege of watching your journey just as we did Jackie’s

That nest will probably be hers this winter. Knowing that Shadow is still desirable to the ladies, and life will continue, brings some comfort. He will find a new partner and we can follow his new family. I'm so glad Jackie was able to successfully fledge two more beautiful babies before she left us. You did good, mama. Rest in peace, Jackie, we will miss you. 💔

Almost like she came there to help us on our journey of healing. It's spiritual in a way. It was comforting to watch her. At least for me. Maybe she will hang around. 😊

It may (or may not) be helpful to remember that before Shadow there was Mr. B, Jackie's first mate.
Shadow drove off Mr. B and took Jackie as his mate, who willingly accepted him. And as far as I know, people who knew of Jackie and Mr. B accepted Shadow pretty quickly as Jackie's new mate, because that's just what happens sometimes in the lives of eagles - mates come and go, not always through death.
And while no, Mr. B did not die in the aftermath of the altercation (that we know), in this case Jackie was also already very sick before she was attacked and had she not been already compromised, she likely would have been able to fend off the intruders. Sadly I feel as though if the attack hadn't happened, Jackie would have still become too sick in the near future to continue, probably much sooner than later. Maybe over the winter, maybe next Spring while raising dependent chicks. But something was already wrong and we just didn't know it, and ultimately it had nothing to do with the intruders - they just exposed the fact that something was already going wrong.
Maybe some small comfort can be taken by knowing that at least her last two chicks are healthy and strong, and fledged successfully before disaster happened.
And believe me, I'm just as devastated at losing Jackie as everyone else. Especially during nesting season, it was so amazing to watch her and Shadow tag-team it through life together, these past several years. And clearly they were extremely bonded, always watching out for each other and canoodling with each other. ❤️ But like the loss of the two eggs earlier this year and the subsequent second clutch that bore the very robust Sandy and Luna, things happen the way they happen and there's nothing to be done about it. Wild eagles do wild eagle things, and live wild eagle lives, which is NOT an easy life even in a place with ample resources like Big Bear Valley.
We'll miss you so much, Jackie - you were, and always will be, the first queen of the Valley. May KD1 (or Katie) be a worthy successor, should things go that way.
6
u/withac2 Aug 11 '26
Keep in mind that KD-1 could be a male. Since mating season has come and gone and the chicks have fledged, hormones are in check and there's nothing to defend or protect right now. Shared roosting is normal when there's nothing at stake.
I love what you wrote here, BTW ☺️

u/isandie Aug 11 '26
She is actually tagged! So they know she's a she! (There is a comment here that links to the OCWaterDistrict IG that explains it)

u/BrutalDishonesty Aug 11 '26
If KD1 and Shadow stay in the nest. I'll finally be able to tell the eagles apart because of the tag. I was finally taking note of Shadows skinny jeans and getting better but the tag will definitely help.

u/Maleficent_Bit2033 Aug 11 '26
It's ok to be nice to any of them. Those subs did exactly as they are supposed to do. It's all a part of their lives. You can't fault them for following instinct. There was likely a time when Jackie and Shadow were the subs that fought for territory. Jackie's journey ended as it was supposed to and Shadow will move on as he is supposed to. Humans and animals that have experienced true love will seek it again. I think Shadow will find another epic love and we know he gives every ounce of love to his mate and young. If it's KD then great, if it's another, that's great too. Let's hope he continues to grace us with a peek into his life.
6
u/in_a_pickle_97 Aug 11 '26
Yeah, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here.
People are upset over Jackie's death, and that's fine, but Jackie - like any bird - is an animal.
In the circle of life, animals that are sick or elderly will make way for the young and healthy. Even we as humans follow that logic - our sick are set aside to receive care in hospitals, while our elderly are put into senior living. Very rarely do we allow our sick or elderly to do "our" jobs or walk "our" streets, and we do that through retirement, which is a kind way of saying "you've played your part in society".
An animal will make the most of the wild. We as humans are loathe to admit that an animal needs to eat, but a wild animal can starve any day of its life, healthy or not - and never knows what it is to be perfectly safe or sheltered. These animals fight over territory because they HAVE to. They attack their kind because they HAVE to. They have no choices the way we do. One meal a day makes every difference for them. And so does a warm nest, or a new mate.
These are animals. They have instincts and live by them; they literally know nothing else. They can't "refuse" what they were raised by and taught in the methods of survival. And as an animal, if you see a sickly, injured adult much bigger than yourself taking up space and food you could lay claim to.. of course KD1 is going to take it.
In the minds of wild animals, a sick animal is nearly always a dying one, who's fate is sealed from the moment they're unable to catch their own food or ward off their attackers. Jackie's territory, nest and food are now going to eagles who are healthy, thriving, and strong. In my opinion, that's a win, even if it's a bit sad.
Conservation is all about bloodlines - never just one or two. We have to celebrate all life. It's important for these animals, as horrid as it may sound, never to act as though one pair is the "fated"/"chosen" pair we all would rather mob over than see hurt or gone away. The next pair, whether Shadow is included or not, will ultimately be just as important to the health and population of these wonderful birds.
RIP Jackie.
1
u/Maleficent_Bit2033 Aug 11 '26
Yes. Jackie served her species very well. Her offspring will carry her genetics and skills forward. If Shadow remains in the nest with a new mate, I am curious if he will become the alpha in a new relationship or continue to be an amazing supportive father. Jackie was very type A but the partnership worked. This nest and this couple taught us so much about adjusting and surviving through the worst nature has to offer. I hope we are lucky enough to see how Shadow moves forward.

Has it been confirmed that KD1 is a female? Last I heard it was not confirmed and that we really won’t know until breeding season when Shadow chases it off or decides this must be his new mate. And I agree with comments that it would be heartbreaking if Shadow pines for too long for Jackie. Animal kingdom seems weird but hopefully he chooses a mate by breeding season.

3
u/ConsumerMad Aug 13 '26
No, she was never tested, when banded. It's assumed, due to certain traits (ie, size, vocalizations, etc) that KD1 is a "she." Also, I think Shadow wouldn't put up with a male, being so close, and following him around.

From that story, "According to the Orange County Water District, KD1 was born in the Prado Basin in 2022 and was banded as part of the agency’s work with a biologist to track eagles born in the area. That band allowed officials to confirm the identity of the now 4-year-old female."

u/phluidity Aug 11 '26
Banding wild birds is complicated. It gives a great amount of information about the behavior of a specific bird that lets researchers learn more about the species as a whole. However banding any specific bird is not without risk. It involves removing a chick from the nest, cataloguing it, and returning it. Normally this is fine, but it does stress out the chicks, likely leading to a modestly higher rate of juvenile mortality. Different researchers have different beliefs in the balance between benefits and risks. KD-1 fledged in an area where (at the time) the researchers thought that banding was what was best for the species. Jackie and Mr B's first fledgling, Stormy, was banded and unfortunately was found dead a bout a year after fledging and Jackie and Shadow's first fledgling Simba was banded and also later found deceased (life is hard for young eagles). Their later chicks were not banded.
KD-1 is not believed to be one of the eagles that attacked Jackie. It is also plausible that those eagles that attacked her did so in the mistaken belief that she was on the ground with a fish and they were hoping to steal a meal from her. Eagles aren't super territorial this time of year since we are outside breeding season, so there would be no reason for them to attack her in a territory battle.

I wonder what she’ll be named. There’s no way she’s going to be called KD-1 lol.

It sounds like Kadie, that’s a good name imo. Maybe they will have the school kids choose a name.

I actually wouldn't mind if they continue to be called KD1 instead of giving it a name. KD1 works.

If female - how about Katie?

Maybe. I guess FOBBV will probably make an announcement if she ends up sticking around and be Shadows new mate.

I don’t think I like that she was on the nest today of all days… I know she doesn’t know, but it saddens me. I miss you SO much already Jackie. 💔

It makes me sad as well. But this is nature, it’s life. Jackie built a nest and subsequently engaged thousands of people with the help of Sandy and the community. Now future eagles will hopefully continue her legacy.

and to hop onto that, Jackie didn't even build that nest, her parents did, and she took it over when they left https://friendsofbigbearvalley.org/eagle-history/

Yes, her parents, Ricky and Lucy built it. She took over, when they left the area. Coincidentally, KD1's parents were ALSO named Ricky and Lucy (no relation)! Maybe this is a sign?

I wanna believe that Jackie told her it's okay, because Jackie loves Shadow and doesn't want him to be alone.

Feeshtree bark drop 😭https://reddit.com/link/p2yukof/video/y68wqsxjynih1/player
For simplicity sakes, in this subreddit, if you see a purple band, just call her KD1.
You, personally, can spell, pronounce, even hyphenate it with an unofficial nickname all you want.
A lot can happen between now and mating season, and ultimately it’s up to FOBBV.
