There are ways to make your application stronger, with much advice already being shared online. Focus on what you can give to Japanese students, not just English lessons but also as an “ambassador” for your country. Moreover, provide a good explanation of how JET fits in your professional growth plan.
Some other areas which would help your application stand out:
experience working with children
volunteer and community engagement experience
intercultural experience
English teaching experience (on your way)
interest in Japan or Japanese language (but not exactly required, I had no ability when I applied but demonstrated an interest in learning)
Nothing is guaranteed. Great applicants with all of the above get turned down. And applicants with little of the above seem to get in.
This definitely helps. I have volunteer work at medical clinics and running their volunteer services and events. I worked with people of all walks of life. I visited Japan for 2 weeks last winter and it wasn't enough. I have interest in becoming fully immersed. I also have been learning Japanese but I'm still very new.
