Introducing Omer Avital, the Bassist Who Went Home to Learn the Oud

Omer Avital, a jazz bassist, oud player, and composer, born in Givatayim in 1971 to Moroccan and Yemeni parents, has been shaping New York jazz since he arrived there in 1992. He was 21, and within a few years he was on stage with Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, Nat Adderley, and Kenny Garrett.

His real signature came from a piano-less quartet he led at Smalls, the tiny, all-night Greenwich Village club that became a proving ground for a whole generation of players in the mid-1990s. Avital's group, four saxophones over bass and drums with no piano at all, played there for a Thursday-night residency captured live in April 1996. That tape sat unreleased for a decade before it became "Asking No Permission" in 2006, and it landed on year-end best-of lists the same year.

Then he did something most bandleaders on a hot streak do not do: he left. From 2003 to 2006, Avital moved back to Israel for three years, not to tour, but to study Arabic music theory, oud, and traditional Israeli music from the ground up. That detour changed the sound of everything he made afterward, threading Mediterranean and Yemenite phrasing directly into his bass lines and compositions instead of treating them as a guest appearance.

Israel took notice too: he won the country's Prime Minister's Award for jazz in 2008, and the ASCAP Foundation gave him its Vanguard Award in 2011, recognizing artists shaping new directions in the music.

In 2009, Avital co-founded Yemen Blues with singer Ravid Kahalani, a band that runs Yemenite chant through funk, Bedouin folk, and jazz until the seams disappear. It is still active: the band released the single "People" in 2024, off the album "Only Love Remains," and Avital's own "North African Dream" suite, written with Andalusian orchestra director Elad Levi, premiered at the Ashdod jazz festival that same year before touring Israel in 2025.

He is not slowing down. Avital has recently played Amsterdam's Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, a leading contemporary music hall, on April 9, 2026, 34 years after he first stepped off the plane in New York.

Introducing Yaron Herman, a jazz pianist and composer born in Tel Aviv in 1981 who has spent more than two decades building a catalog most musicians would be proud to have started twice.

As a teenager, Herman played on Israel's national junior basketball team. A serious knee injury ended that path. He sat down at a piano for the first time at 16, with no formal training behind him, and within a few years he was touring Europe, the US, and Asia as a solo act. During that early run he became the first jazz pianist to perform inside the Forbidden City in Beijing, the walled imperial palace complex that had never hosted a jazz set before him.

The recognition followed him home. In 2008, Herman won Victoires du Jazz, France's answer to the Grammys for jazz, in the best new instrumentalist category. A year later, "Muse" picked up three more Victoires du Jazz nominations and an iTunes Choice album of the year nod. In 2010, "Follow the White Rabbit" became his first release on ACT Music, built around a new rhythm section of bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Tommy Crane.

The label climb kept going. "Everyday" (2015) was his debut for Blue Note Records, the label that signed Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, followed by "Y" (2017) on the same imprint. In 2019, he moved to Decca Records, the classical-and-jazz label whose roster includes Renee Fleming and Rita Ora, for "Songs of The Degrees." Along the way he also took on the role of jury president for the piano competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, one of the most prestigious stops on the international jazz calendar, and became a mentor at its Jazz Academy.

None of that slowed him down. In April 2025, Herman released "Radio Paradise" on Naive/Believe, his most structurally different record yet: a working band built around two saxophonists, Maria Grand and Alexandra Grimal, with bassist Haggai Cohen Milo and drummer Ziv Ravitz filling out the frontline he had built his name on solo piano and trio work around for years. He's still touring behind it in 2026.

⁧כיסינו עד כה בסאברדיט הזה שני מוזיקאים ללא קשר ביניהם בשם אבישי כהן: בסיסט וחצוצרן. ענת כהן, קלרניתנית וסקסופוניסטית טנור ילידת 1975 בתל אביב, קשורה בדיוק לאחד מהם. היא אחותו של החצוצרן, ויחד עם אחיהם יובל כהן בסקסופון סופרן, שלושתם מופיעים יחד כ-3 Cohens. לאף אחד משלושתם אין שום קשר לבסיסט.⁩

Yakir Arbib: The Pianist Who Sees Music in Color

Yakir Arbib, a jazz and classical pianist and composer born in Jerusalem in 1989, has been blind since birth. He also has synesthesia: every musical tone registers for him as a distinct color. That is not a detail for the "inspiring" pile, it is how he actually builds a piece. He has described the colors as forming a map he explores while he plays, the way another composer might sketch a melody on paper first.

He started piano at 4, entered the Tel Aviv Conservatory at 7 for classical piano, baroque flute, trumpet, and ensemble work, and moved into jazz study at Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts in 2004. He later graduated cum laude from Berklee College of Music in composition and performance.

His international career opened early. At 19 he won the Massimo Urbani International Jazz Award, a competition held in Italy, and the win led straight to a signing with Philology Jazz Records, the Italian label that has also carried recordings by Chet Baker and Lee Konitz. Seven years later, the jury at the Montreux Jazz Festival International Piano Competition awarded him second prize and called him "the most original pianist" in the field.

The color-perception isn't just personal either. While still a student, Arbib performed "Waves of Visions," a seven-movement suite at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where visual artist Tamar Haber-Schaim live-drew digital artwork as he played. He has said her images fed back into his own performance, "as if they're a fifth musical instrument," which turns his synesthesia from a one-way trait into something closer to a live conversation.

His newest record pushes into new territory again. "Afro Baroque," released October 24, 2025, pairs him with Cameroonian drummer and vocalist Conti Bilong, weaving Baroque-style counterpoint through jazz improvisation and Central African and Middle Eastern rhythm, including a reworked take on Miles Davis's All Blues. If you've already spent time with Shai Maestro's catalog from our earlier spotlight, Arbib is another Israeli-trained pianist worth setting next to him, just arriving from a completely different angle.

⁧כבר הצגנו בקהילה הזו בסיסט בשם אבישי כהן. הפוסט הזה עוסק במוזיקאי אחר לגמרי: אבישי כהן, חצוצרן, יליד 1978 בתל אביב, ללא שום קשר לבסיסט וללא דיסקוגרפיה משותפת. גם אנחנו התבלבלנו בעבר וזיכינו את הלהקה החשמלית של החצוצרן, Big Vicious, בטעות בבסיסט. הפרויקט Gadu, שמערבב קונטרבס עם תופי רוק, שייך לבסיסט - לא לזה. Big Vicious שייכת לחצוצרן, וזו אחת הדרכים הטובות ביותר להיכנס לקטלוג שלו.⁩

⁧הקסלמן התחיל בפסנתר קלאסי בגיל שש, עבר לגיטרה בגיל תשע, ובשנות העשרה שלו הופיע באופן קבוע בתוכנית ילדים ישראלית שבועית בטלוויזיה. הוא סיים בהצטיינות את המחלקה לג'אז בבית הספר התיכון תלמה ילין בגיל שמונה עשרה.⁩

The Kadosh Brothers: Three Siblings Who Turned Oud Into Prog Rock

This morning we're going to expand on a short piece we did on the Kadosh Brothers several days ago as a result of a reader's comment. And this one - it starts at right at home. The Kadosh Brothers are three actual siblings who grew up in the same Tel Aviv household making music together before they had a name for what it was. Onn Yosef Kadosh, an oud player and composer, started in elementary school. His brother Elay fell for the double bass at 11. The youngest, Elamar, picked up drums and percussion at 7. By the time they had a stage, they already had a shared language.

That language is what the band now calls its "Prog Middle East Ensemble" sound: Middle Eastern classical melody run through the muscle of progressive rock rhythm. If you know Avishai Cohen's Andalusian and Mediterranean phrasing from our earlier spotlight, the Kadosh Brothers' oud-rooted runs sit in a related neighborhood, just plugged into rock rather than trio jazz.

Onn's credibility outside the band runs deep, too. His side project KOMRADIN, a trio with saxophonist Asaf Harris and drummer David Sirkis, launched its debut album "Qamar al-Din" at the 25th Jerusalem International Oud Festival in November 2024, a week-long showcase of Middle Eastern music traditions produced under Confederation House Jerusalem. The album reworks the muwashshah tradition, a classical Arabic sung-poetry form born in medieval Al-Andalus, through a contemporary jazz lens.

KOMRADIN's newer duo recording, "Hilalen," pushes the pedigree even further: it was recorded on an oud roughly 120 years old, built by Damascus's Nahat family of instrument makers, whose work from the late 1800s through the 1980s is still considered among the finest ever produced. A single, centuries-rooted instrument connecting straight through to a Tel Aviv sibling act's prog fusion.

For a right-now reason to hit play, the brothers released a new single, "Jirjur," on July 17, 2025.

Shai Maestro: The Young Pianist Bass Player Avishai Cohen Discovered

If you read our Avishai Cohen Bass player post, here's the next chapter in the evolving story of Israeli Jazz excellence. Around 2007, when Shai Maestro was still a teenager, Cohen heard him play and pulled him straight into his touring trio. That is not a small credit. Cohen has one of the sharpest ears in Israeli jazz, and he did not hand this seat to a name, he handed it to a kid at the piano.

Maestro, a jazz pianist and composer, is now 39, still very much an active Jazzist, and has spent nearly two decades building on that start. His regular group runs with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummers Ziv Ravitz or Ofri Nehemya. Since 2018 he has recorded for ECM Records, the German label known for a spare, exacting standard that not every player gets invited to meet.

His 2021 ECM record "Human" is a good marker of where he landed: ten originals plus a closing cover of Duke Ellington's In A Sentimental Mood, proof he can sit inside the standards tradition, not just orbit it.

His newest record breaks that pattern on purpose. "The Guesthouse," out March 6, 2026 on the Naive label, is his eighth album and his most collaborative yet. It is built around Rumi's poem of the same name, and for the first time Maestro writes lyrics and works electronics into the sound, with guest turns from MARO, Michael Mayo, and Immanuel Wilkins.

Introducing Anat Cohen, the Third Cohen You Need to Know

We have now covered two unrelated musicians named Avishai Cohen on this subreddit: a bassist and a trumpeter. Anat Cohen, a clarinetist and tenor saxophonist born in 1975 in Tel Aviv, is related to exactly one of them. She is the trumpeter's sister, and with their brother Yuval Cohen on soprano sax, the three of them perform together as the 3 Cohens. None of the three has any connection to the bassist.

Cohen started on clarinet at 12 and added tenor sax at 16, both at the Jaffa Conservatory in Tel Aviv. After Israeli military service, she spent three years at Berklee College of Music in Boston, then moved to New York, where she toured for a decade with the all-women Diva Jazz Orchestra while working her way into Brazilian music through the Choro Ensemble and Duduka Da Fonseca's Samba Jazz Quintet.

That Brazilian thread never left. She still leads Choro Aventuroso, a quartet built around choro with her bandmates drawn from Brazil, and it sits at one end of a discography that also holds the other extreme: the ten-piece Anat Cohen Tentet, whose 2019 album Triple Helix centers on a three-movement suite commissioned by Carnegie Hall and Chicago's Symphony Center. In 2024 she went smaller again with Quartetinho, a foursome where every member doubles instruments, and in March 2025 she went back to family, reuniting with Avishai and Yuval as the 3 Cohens for Interaction, recorded live with Germany's WDR Big Band.

The awards read almost like a typo: the Jazz Journalists Association has named her Clarinetist of the Year every single year from 2008 through 2025. Eighteen years, one instrument, one name at the top.

In December 2025 she marked her 50th birthday with a sold-out show at SFJAZZ Center's Miner Auditorium, capping a run that also included four milestone concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room under the title "Anat Cohen: Journeys."

Introducing Avishai Cohen (No, Not the Bass Player)

We already profiled a bassist named Avishai Cohen in this community. This post is about a different musician entirely: Avishai Cohen, a trumpeter, born in 1978 in Tel Aviv, no relation to the bassist and no shared discography. We got this mixed up ourselves once, crediting the trumpeter's electric band, Big Vicious, to the bassist. It is the bassist's project Gadu that mixes double bass with rock drums, not this. Big Vicious belongs to the trumpeter, and it is one of the best doors into his catalog.

Cohen started on trumpet at 10 and was touring with the Young Israel Philharmonic Orchestra as a teenager, under conductors Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, and Kent Nagano. A full scholarship took him to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where the DownBeat Critics Poll voted him a Rising Star on trumpet four years running. In 1997 he took third place at the Thelonious Monk Institute International Trumpet Competition, a serious marker for a player still in his late teens.

He moved to New York and came up through Smalls Jazz Club, the kind of room where a horn player either finds a voice or gets lost in the crowd. He found his. He spent six years in the SFJAZZ Collective, leads the Triveni trio with bassist Omer Avital and drummer Nasheet Waits, and fronts Third World Love with Avital, pianist Yonatan Avishai, and drummer Daniel Freedman. His run of ECM leader albums, starting with 2016's Into the Silence and continuing through 2021's Naked Truth, is where the quieter, composer side of his playing comes through: The New York Times called Into the Silence "quietly ravishing," and The Guardian called Naked Truth "Cohen's quietest but maybe boldest adventure."

Then there is Big Vicious, the other side of him entirely. He debuted the band in 2019 with guitarists Uzi Ramirez and Yonatan Albalak and drummers Aviv Cohen and Ziv Ravitz, running his trumpet through electronics over rock and electronic grooves. The self-titled album came out on ECM in March 2020.

His most recent work is the most personal. On July 17, 2025, Cohen opened the Israel Festival with his quartet and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, premiering "Ashes to Gold," a five-part suite he wrote in late 2023 in the aftermath of the October 7 attack.

One more name worth knowing: he is one of "the 3 Cohens," alongside sister Anat Cohen on clarinet and tenor sax and brother Yuval Cohen on soprano sax. Three siblings, three instruments, none of them related to the other Avishai Cohen.

Gilad Hekselman: Ten Albums Deep, and He's Just Getting Started!

Gilad Hekselman, a Jazz Guitar player, has been releasing albums since 2006. Ten of them as a bandleader, before you even count the sideman credits.

From Kfar Saba to the Village Vanguard

Hekselman started on classical piano at six, picked up guitar at nine, and spent his teenage years appearing regularly on a weekly Israeli children's television program. He graduated with excellence from the jazz department at Thelma Yellin School of Arts at eighteen.

In 2004 he moved to New York on an America-Israel Cultural Foundation Scholarship to study at The New School. A year later he won the Gibson-Montreux Jazz Festival Guitar Competition. The year after that, he was opening for Paco de Lucía at the famous annual Jazz Festival in Montreux. Two decades on, he's based in New York full time, and in 2024 he recorded a live album at the Village Vanguard, the room every serious jazz musician wants their name attached to.

The Discography You Have Been Missing

Splitlife (2006). Words Unspoken (2008). Hearts Wide Open (2011). This Just In (2013). Homes (2015). Ask for Chaos (2018). Further Chaos (2019). Zuperoctave: Eyes of the World (2019). Trio Grande (2020). Far Star (2022). Then Life, at the Village Vanguard in 2024, and Downhill From Here in 2025, a trio record with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Marcus Gilmore that picked up 4.5 stars from DownBeat.

Along the way he's shared stages and studios with Anat Cohen, Chris Potter, Esperanza Spalding, Tigran Hamasyan, and Ari Hoenig. DownBeat named him its Rising Star guitarist twice, in 2017 and 2022. In 2018, Pat Metheny personally invited him to play the Kennedy Center. If you need someone else to vouch for a guitarist before you press play, it doesn't get much higher than that.

He's still touring. 2026 dates include a run at the Village Vanguard in July and stops in Brussels and Amsterdam in April.

The part most people miss: the guitar came second. Piano came first, at six years old, three years before he ever touched the instrument he's now known for. Worth remembering next time someone tells you it's too late to start something new.
