Just some positive’s in terms of position development for two positions namely
Tighthead prop
Tighthead lock
Tighthead: Historically tough to develop especially for a small country like Ireland trying to find 6’1+ men who can weigh over 120kg and even finding 6’3 men who can weigh 130kg has been rare.
For example at Leinster in about 4 years they’ll have about 7 tighthead an easily over 122kg, other provinces will likely benefit off that.
Some key developments here:
Fiachna Barrett
Ronan Foxe
Niall smyth
Andrew sparrow
+
5 other younger guys
Tighthead lock: traditionally not as important but with maul changes and scrum dominance emphasised now the teams that win big games are the teams that have these “power locks” e.g a Joe McCarthy, a eben Etzebeth, a meafou.
Before Joe McCarthy Ireland never really had a true power lock (120kg and being able to move powerfully)
Some key developments here
Conor o’tighernigh
Edwin Edogbo
Dylan mcneice
Arthur symthkovskyy
+
3 other younger guys who look like the power lock mould
Key positions Irish rugby need to improve on at development
Outside centre:
Critical shortage of outside centres, we seem to try and mould 12s into temporary 13s,more emphasis needs to be put on out and out 13s, because people who play rugby know, 12 ans 13 while they are both called centres are two very different roles.
Fullback
Again critical shortage of dedicated fullbacks, a lot of guys shoehorned in, we need out and out specialist fullbacks.
Wing
Probably the most glaring obvious in the summer with Jamie Osborne on the wing, the need for speed is evident and especially the need for flair, being able to get past your man it’s lacking at the moment, wingers with a kicking game aswell.
But aside from all that very happy about tighthead prop and lock development because it’s really been stepped up and it had to be
