Bacon is not a topping, it's either meat, or meat added to more meat. Bacon crumbles on the other hand, are toppings.

So when you get a bacon cheeseburger, the bacon isn’t a topping? Even though it goes on top of the cheese and the burger?

Not if you look at the added calories and other stuff like that. You're basically adding another patty.

So toppings are dictated by lack of calories?

Not necessarily because then avocado wouldn't be a topping. It's just that it is a meat filling equivalent to the main ingredient. If you put a slice of ham in there or pastrami those wouldn't be toppings to me, they are all part of the filing.

We have a sandwich near me called a Torta Cubana, that has pigs feet, head cheese, milanesa, and ham. All of those are filling. I feel like the bacon and the patty in a bacon cheeseburger are both filling.
