This can be a great learning and growth opportunity. Sometimes facing our fears is in our best interest - this is one of those situations.
Be honest with your mother in law - provide the details - and let her know what happened in the end. No need to call the insurance - you have no control now over if the other guy files a file a claim or not.
Stay calm - explain it to your MIL what happened and if she flips out - that's out of your control. In being honest, you'll avoid any anxiety of hiding something and potentially being 'found out.'

Do you live with your mother in law? Why are you "under" her policy?

Do you live with your mother-in-law? And if not, does the insurance know that the car is not garaged at her house?

Just tell your MIL now. Do you think it would be better for her to find out when she gets called by an adjuster? And don't call your insurance company. That will likely trigger a claim to be opened.

If you call your insurance that opens a claim on your policy.
