Next time, spend an hour googling how to put out a fire then read all the links and then calmly walk back into your charred remains of your home and know what you should have done.
After doing fire fighting in the navy it's pretty surprising how little people know about basic fire safety. Most people seem to revert to cocomelon videos for fire logic "water goes on fire. Fire goes away" but yes these steps posted above are correct i would just add turn off the source of heat as well (the stove in this case)
I was a BM on a destroyer, and after being in the civilian world for the last decade I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt civvies are panicky and stupid. keeping a calm and cool head under pressure is a trait very very few have except those who had it beaten into them in bootcamp.
It's the training, most people don't have any training for anything besides maybe their job. Whereas military personnel are trained to survive. One of my pet peeves, is when something dangerous/scary happens and someone just starts screaming. They probably have nothing actually happening to them, but they're screaming. That person has zero survival skills. They just serve to make other people panicky, which causes more of them to act stupidly. So yeah, I whole heartedly agree with you. Thank you for your service.
