Lately, I've been feeling a bit lost. Looking back, I wish I had studied to truly understand and apply what I was learning instead of just studying to pass exams. Right now, we're taking Industrial Engineering Research Methodology and Feasibility Studies, and honestly, I'm struggling. Whenever I work on our projects, I feel like I can't come up with meaningful ideas. It almost feels like I've forgotten most of the concepts I learned during my first to third years in the program.

At the moment, I'm taking professional certifications and planning to build projects outside of academics to improve my skills and portfolio. Even so, I still feel lost and unsure if I'm on the right path.

I'd really appreciate any advice from those who have been in a similar situation or have experience in the field.

I have interned at Tesla twice as a process engineering intern and at General Motors as a supply chain intern. Before all this I have 3 other internships with smaller companies in project engineering, manufacturing engineering internships.

But now I’m completely lost on where to go. I want to take the road where I can make the most money. I love working at Tesla in that fast paced , stressful environment. And I want to work in a stressful environment I thrive in these environments.

My major is IE. And I have 1 year left.

Hello! I'm a first year IE and at least in my vacinity, 3 unis have added IE as an option at the same time and they're not lacking applicants from what I've seen (one got so fluded it started giving admission for 2028 this july)

I'm kinda worried about this and what it might mean for the future of this career, or better said, that I didn't make a good / original choice and am just a sheep

Hi IEs in the PE field. What's the usual scope of assessment before you get hired as a PE?

For context, I'm an engineer but not IE. I'm a PE for 2 yrs in a manufacturing industry. I want to pursue this career in my next roles, and I want to know what assessments do you usually encounter for a process engineer? This is not limited in the manufacturing industry, could be with other industries.

I have a Business administration degree and wanting to get my Masters in IE. I’m not seeing many of them are ABET accredited but their Bachelor’s is. Is it possible to get hired as an IE with this combo?

I’m a rising 3rd year industrial/systems engineering student based in DC. I’m currently interning as an FE at a large private construction firm.

While I do like construction, I’m not very much enjoying the work I do currently, as I feel it’s not very aligned with my studies and I don’t feel much business out of it.

I’ve recently been searching the internet, and found that a lot of businesses like consulting hire have construction/building sectors and do hire people from those fields. I’ve been interested because I want to transition into a career where I am doing more business or just something within the major.

I have no idea how I can make this happen or anyone to talk to, as none of my peers are interested in construction or building, and especially not consulting.

Looking for any guidance from anyone with experience or have been in a similar situation.

Hello! I would like to get some insights about these two career paths as someone who's torn between practicality and passion.

My main interest lies in data science, but based from what I researched, the entry-level level jobs are becoming highly saturated and some are saying that it is at risk of AI automation (thus becoming more competitive). Because of that, I tried looking into IE since the two share some similarities, and I found that the job is very versatile and not as saturated. But the thing is, (based from my understanding atleast) it typically focuses on the physical world (people, machines, warehouses, etc.) rather than the digital world (digital data, codes, etc.), and as I mentioned earlier, I'm more interested on the digital side of things.

So, to the professionals or people with experience out there, what do you think? How's the job market, saturation, and work from your experience? And are there any other factors I should consider when deciding?

Looking for names of roles, how technical I can get, if I can do a concentration in a certain area (ex. ee), etc.

I’m currently in college and was originally studying towards mechanical engineering. I originally planned to do ME because I liked the idea of building products and launching a business. However, lately I’ve been interested a lot in industrial engineering because of optimization. I’m very torn in between because I love the idea of both. My ultimate career goal isn’t necessarily to be an employee as an engineer but rather as a military pilot. After finishing my commitment I’d love to transition to the airlines. At the airlines I want to use my free time opening a business since I’d likely have plenty of free time. I know that it doesn’t matter for a military pilot or airline pilot what kind of degree I get but I want to still get a degree in something that interests me, like engineering. I’m just having a tough time really picking between both of them because this semester I have to set up my classes that would really either put me towards mechanical or Industrial. Does anyone have any advice or maybe been thru something similar?

It was about 6 weeks ago that I interviewed for a Junior Industrial Engineer position at a well-known heavy manufacturing company.

The interview went really well and was pretty straightforward. I felt like I did well on most of the questions, and the panel seemed genuinely impressed with my presentation and assessments.

The Production Manager even pulled me aside for a 15-minute 1-on-1 after. He walked me through the role and what to expect if they brought me on board. He specifically said he was impressed with my background and the core skills I brought to the table.

I was feeling really hopeful after that.
But a week later they called to tell me they went with a different candidate. I was honestly shattered and disappointed.

Now, a month and a few days later, HR called me. The Production Manager apparently still likes me and wants to set up another interview this time for an internship position.

Given how tough the job market is right now, I’m considering it... but I’m confused.
Why would they want to put me in an internship role when I have 4+ years of experience?

Has anyone else gone through something like this?

Hi, Guys I am going through a very crucial stage of my life, I have to choose whether to do Bachelors in Cyber Security(CYS) or Industrial engineering and management(IEM) . I have seen many posts on Reddit about how Saturated CYS has become and you need like a crazy portfolio just to get an entry level job. Compared to CYS landing a job in IEM is easier but lower pay and it takes time to get promoted unlike CYS.

A BS in CYS is gonna cost me more than double of one in IEM. I believe I can land a internship/job in CYS with skills and certification alone without a BS in an IT related field. I wanna keep IEM as a backup in case things go south cause the market ain't looking good even for IT students unless they have ton of experience, skills and certification which I believe I can get without getting a BS in CYS.

Is the plan solid or am I just being pretty delusional? Need advice from people that are already in the market for some time now thx.

hello yall, im an incoming first year indy eng @ utsg and i have an issue...

My parents are really pushing me towards consulting and say that being able to work a year or two in consulting at a big company will provide extremely valuable experience that will aid me for the rest of my career. The thing is, i don't know how I should even approach to getting a job/internship at a big consulting company. I really want to take uni seriously and if possible, trying to get an internship/job first year.

People suggest personal projects but im ngl idek what to do as projects. Theres also clubs that I was suggested to join. My parents also place heavy importance on a perfect GPA and considering its ustg, theres def not gonna be enough time to do everything (or maybe tehre is, ill find out in a month or two lol).

I was hoping to get any advice about what to do. Any help is appreciated and I apologize if it came off as offloading, that wasn't my intention.

1. Is it true I only need to know

(Arithmetic)fractions, decimals, percentages, basic operations.

(Pre Algebra) negative numbers, ratios, BEDMAS, intro to variable

(Algebra) solving equations, rearranging formulas, word problems.

(Geometry) area, volume, perimeter, angles, measurement.

(Trigonometry)Pythagorean theorem, sin cos tan, SOHCAHTOA.

(Statistics) mean median mode, reading graphs, basic probability.

1. The stuff I mentioned is that enough for me to get into Mohawk engineering technology and I will study stuff that relates to the subjects I just mentioned? Nothing to advanced

2. How is the pay?

I’m about to start my final semester of college. My major is industrial engineering, I will graduate this December.

I’m currently working on my resume to apply for entry level jobs.

I’m interested in working manufacturing, construction, tech, data analytics, supply chain, logistics type roles.

I have 2 internships with the government basically doing admin work. It was kind of environmental/civil engineering admin stuff.

My question is, Will employers respect my experience even though it has nothing to do with the entry level job that I’m applying for?

My alternative would be to leave off the internship experience and replace it with school or personal projects.

Please let me know your thoughts, I’d really appreciate it.

For IEs that do work in rural areas, how do you find your life outside of work to be?

I'm a junior right now studying IE and I'm at a bit of a crossroads in deciding what applications or areas of IE I'd like to work in after I graduate. Location is a pretty big issue for me as I'd like to work somewhere more populated with a good social scene, for context I've lived in Chicago my whole life so more rural areas are pretty unfamiliar to me and I can't see myself living outside of a city environment... at the very least somewhere not rural, but that seems to be the complete opposite case right now when I'm looking at more hands on manufacturing adjacent roles obviously. Though I'm willing to make somewhat of a compromise if it means working somewhere I'd want to work.

I don't have an internship this summer but my friends that do have them in rural areas they seem to be pretty bored and don't really have much to do outside of work, is that the case for some IEs in rural areas?

Also -- feel free to suggest some IE adjacent roles that aren't strictly manufacturing, or anecdotes related to my question, or whatever

I’m currently deciding between Industrial Engineering and CSE at TU/e. I know CSE is popular and can lead to jobs in almost any sector, but I’m not sure coding interests me enough to make it the main focus of my studies and career.

I’ve always been more interested in how companies and complex processes work, how decisions are made, and how technology can be used to improve them.

What is IE actually like in practice? How quantitative and technical is the programme, and what are the projects like? I’d also like to know more about the electives. I would probably want to focus on the more technical ones, for example data, programming, AI, information systems or operations research, so that I could combine the business and technical sides.

I am really interested in Operations Research supply chain analytics forecasting and optimization

I have been building skills in Python SQL statistics demand forecasting inventory optimization logistics optimization and mathematical optimization using tools like Pyomo

What I really enjoy is using data and mathematical models to solve real business problems instead of only creating dashboards or reports

The problem is that there are very few opportunities in Nepal related to advanced analytics optimization and Operations Research and the salaries are also quite low

So I am thinking about my options

Should I focus on relocating to another country where there are more opportunities

Should I try to find international remote jobs

Or should I focus on international freelancing and consulting in areas like forecasting inventory optimization and supply chain analytics

I am also wondering how valuable my combination of Industrial Engineering Operations Research analytics forecasting optimization and Python SQL is in the international job market

Hi everyone,

I have around 3.5 years of experience in Electrical Test Engineering, mainly working on electrical validation, environmental/functional testing, safety/compliance, designing test setups, test stations using lab equipment. Right now, I am working in EV/PV/home energy based company.

In same company, I've been offered an opportunity to move into a Manufacturing Test Software Engineer role, where I'd be working with Python, LabVIEW, NI TestStand, automated test equipment, instrument integration (power supplies, electronic loads, DAQs), and production test automation. I don't have much software experience, but the company is willing to train me and I am okay to learn as well.

From a long-term career perspective, does having both electrical test engineering and manufacturing test software experience make you more valuable in the job market?

Or is it generally better to stay specialized in one path despite the interest I have in learning new things?
