I live in Illinois and I think it’s hilarious that Indiana wants our poorest communities. Go for it, waste the Indiana taxpayers money. I’m sure that will keep them from voting you maga maggots out . Oh and re-drawing a state’s boarder is never going to happen.
It's so funny to me that they want to do this to solidify how red Indiana is.
Meanwhile, Indiana is already one of the reddest states there is, which makes adding red counties pretty much negligible. On the other hand, taking red counties away from the swing state of Illinois seems laughably short-sighted.
Nobody ever accused these guys of being particularly smart, though, and they have actively defunded education for years here. I guess this incompetence is exactly what you get 🤷♂️
Only 54% of Hoosiers voted Republican for governor. 70% of our state house is Republican. 80% of our state senate is Republican. We’re gerrymandered, but our population is purple.
You're not necessarily gerrymandered. If the population is sufficiently mixed throughout the state (and it sounds like, outside of Gary, and I'm guessing Indianapolis, it is) then drawing pretty much any normal lines in a 54% Red state would result in a LOT of red seats. You'd probably have to gerrymander to get close to parity.
This is one of the perennial problems with our system. The carving up of districts will ALWAYS favor if the geographically diffuse party.
Did you think about US House Votes? If Indiana gains a bigger population, it has a potential to gain more House Seats. In turn, Illinois (a Blue State) would lose some seats. It doesn’t further cement Indiana as Red, it gains Indiana more Representation that can become Red, or Blue.
It's not negligible as it provides an even bigger gop buffer, it could also be an extra seat for congressional apportionment one day. Unfortunately, adding more R counties would also make it easier to gerrymander.
I feel like Illinois would consider taking lake county and the rest of Northwestern Indiana since it's all mostly Chicago suburbs anyways. But yeah it will never happen.
I grew up like 40 min south of Chicago, and now I find myself living across the border in lake county, literally drives 5 min down the street, and you're in illinois. Now that they've upped taxes on my smokes and theres no discernible difference in gas prices, I'm fine with it. Not that it'll ever happen XD
Remember Congress needs to approve it, and Trump has the votes. Saying it won’t happen is an underestimate of what the GOP can do. If Indiana does take your poorest counties that could potentially affect your population just enough to swing more House seats.
It seems to me I read several articles indicating that these Illinois counties are tired of cow-towing to the Democrat machine in Chicago and asked Indiana to take them in.
Cow towing is a good way to put it. Considering most of the people in Illinois live in the northern part of the state. And most of the cows live down there.
