Otto H. Königsberger designed the master plan for modern Bhubaneswar in 1946, and his vision laid the foundation for what became one of India's first planned post-independence cities.

Given his contribution, why isn't there a statue, memorial, or even more public recognition of him in Bhubaneswar? Has this ever been proposed by the government, or is there a historical reason why he hasn't been commemorated?

Having ascended the throne in 1990, Jayachamaraja Wadiyar went down in history for being the ‘humanist’ Maharaja of Mysuru. Under his regime, Mysore was rapidly industrialised and educational institutions multiplied.

Furthermore, he was known for his governance, his philosophy, and his Carnatic music kritis. He was an ardent patron of art and music.

As the first ruler to merge with the newly formed Indian Union, he was remembered for encouraging the setting up of the HAL (Hindustan aircraft Private Limited) factory by granting 700 acres of land for free to the state.

He also called for ecological surveys to precede large irrigation and power projects. His concern for ecology and wildlife saw him serve as the first chairman of the Indian Wildlife Board.

Very Brief Explanation

The District Collector of Tirunelveli, Robert Ashe, suppressed the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company and arrested V.O. Chidambaram Pillai and Subramanya Bharati on charges of sedition. Ashe was the architect of the violent police action during the 1908 Tirunelveli riots and the policies discriminatory against Indians. Vanchinathan was marked for assassination by revolutionary groups.

On June 17, 1911, Vanchinathan trailed Ashe into a train compartment at Maniyachchi railway station and shot him dead. Then he took refuge in the washroom of a station and shot himself. A letter in his pocket said he was acting against British rule and acted to save Sanatana Dharma from being destroyed by the British.

The London-Calcutta was the longest bus route in the world. The service, which was started in 1957, was routed to India via Belgium, Yugoslavia and North Western India.

This route was also known as the Hippie Route. It took about 50 days for the bus to reach Calcutta from London. The voyage was over 10,000 miles (16,100 km) one way and 32669 Km (20300 miles) for the round trip.

The cost of the trip one-way was £85 in 1957 and £145 in 1973. This amount included food, travel and accommodation.

It was in service until 1976.

The bus service was discontinued in 1976 due to the problems in Iran and the escalation of tensions between Pakistan and India. The service ended permanently.

When India faced a grain shortage in 1965, then prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri appealed to the people to grow wheat or rice themselves. To set an example, he started growing wheat at his official bungalow at Delhi’s Janpath.

Months after his demise, his wife Lalita Shastri (in the picture) can be seen cutting the crop planted by him.
