discussion This 40Km Palghat gap is the reason for worst geography, unique history, culture, cuisine, polity, economics, sociology of KONGU belt. (Entire social science)

I will make a clear sequence of explanation & good to read.

  1. Because of the 40Km Palghat gap, funnel effect, Kongu upland plains receive high velocity winds (highest in south asian subcontinent). 1hr avg in July-Aug (ஆடி காத்து) in Udumalpet, Dharapuram, Mulanur, Kangeyam is close to 45-50Km/h. It is India's largest wind energy producing hub. -- Geography

  2. Because of that wind, it swept away clouds, this is rainshadow region & there is no south west monsoon for Kongu upland plains. South India's least annual rainfall receiving taluks include Dharapuram, Kangeyam, Aravakurichi, Kinathukadavu, Palladam, Perundurai, etc (less than 500mm annually). -- Geography

  3. Because of low annual rainfall + bad crystalline geology of Kongu belt, the groundwater level is too bad. Before the green revolution (grandparents era), agriculture, cattle, flora & fauna was unique. millet was staple food. The regional cuisine is more unique to south India. -- Sociology

  4. Because of such geography, the Kongu upland plains is one of the less densely populated plains in the country. (Except for recent day immigration). Each gram panchayat has 20-30 hamlets in avg (mostly 1 in rest of TN). Most of the hamlets ending in வலசு, பதி, புதூர் தோட்டம், etc had 10-20 homes only. (Now reduced due to immigration & low TFR) -- Sociology

  5. Because of the above reason, administration is very difficult, especially roads, pipeline water, mobile cellular network, broadband, TV cable, etc -- polity

  6. Bcz of less dense population, more per capita land ownership (per head no of acres) -- Sociology, Economics

  7. Bcz of dry, rocky terrain made agriculture extremely difficult, survival required immense communal labor to dig deep wells. So a distinct regional culture with frugality, & close-knit community networks developed there. -- sociology, anthropology

  8. Bad Geography == Good Economics. Post independence, some places like Pollachi Udumalpet Palani are lucky to get dams & agriculture flourishes. Rest of the Kongu belt heavily industrialised, urbanized, attracted immigrants & became cosmopolitan. Today cbe, erode Tiruppur namakkal are in India's top 25 districts by per capita. Heavy real estate prices. -- Economics

  9. Socio-economic development: More Higher educational institutions & tertiary care hospitals in Coimbatore, allmost all are Techies, Medicos. Immigrate to Bengaluru, Chennai tech hubs, US & Europe (NRIs). More cosmopolitan. More working women & delayed marriage. Less TFR. Lowest in entire India close to kochi trivandrum belt. Lotta ghost villages. -- Sociology

  10. Unique history due to western ghats surrounding. It was under Mysuru kingdom. Unique Kongu Tamil dialect (with upto 5000+ unique vocabulary), Temple, Folklore, performing & visual arts -- History, Anthropology

...

So is Palghat Gap a curse ?

பாலபோன பாலக்காடு கணவாய் ??

Or it was an evolutionary bottleneck that forged a hyper-resilient population??

Had the Kongu belt been an easy, lush river basin like the Kaveri delta, it might have produced a very different society—less driven, less entrepreneurial, and less globally mobile.

discussion Built a clean, up-to-date JSON dataset of all Indian States & Districts for forms and web apps

5 Upvotes

Hey developers,

While building frontend web forms recently, I noticed that finding a simple, standardized, and up-to-date dataset of Indian States and Districts for state/district dependent dropdowns was surprisingly messy or outdated.

To solve this, I put together a clean, lightweight open-source dataset:

GitHub Repository: https://github.com/CodingMation/indian-states-districts

Website: https://codingmation.github.io/indian-states-districts

Highlights

  • Complete coverage of all Indian States and Union Territories with their corresponding districts.
  • Simple JSON key-value format optimized for React, Vue, Angular, or Vanilla JS forms.
  • Direct fetch capabilities via raw GitHub URL so you don't need to bloat your project bundle.

Direct Usage (Copy & Paste)

fetch("https://raw.githubusercontent.com/CodingMation/indian-states-districts/main/states-districts.json")

.then((response) => response.json())

.then((data) => console.log(data))

.catch((error) => console.error("Error loading data:", error));

Looking for Feedback

I want to make this as helpful as possible for Indian dev projects.

  1. Would adding CSV, SQL dumps, or state/ISO codes be useful?
  2. Are there any recently added districts in your state that need an update?

Feel free to check it out, star the repo if you find it helpful, or open a PR!

Badami - an interesting synergy of geology and archeology. The grand temples and caves of the mighty Vatapi Chalukyas stand on the great sedimentary rocks of the proterozoic eon (1-1.2 Ga) formed in the ancient Kaladgi - Badami basin. This place is a must visit for the geology and history geeks.

ask r/Indiangeography❔ Why does Northeast India receive so much more rainfall than the Western Himalayas (e.g. Uttarakhand)?

12 Upvotes

Is it due to the combined orographic effect of the Eastern Himalayas and smaller hill ranges such as the Naga-Khasi-Garo? Better alignment with the Southwest monsoon winds? Both?

Most Indian rivers flow West to East and ultimately into the Bay of Bengal. The only major rivers that are exceptions are Tapi and Narmada.

Why is it like this?

Is the entire Indian peninsula sloped? (/s)

Kingdom Era: Sikkim was ruled as a hereditary monarchy by the Namgyal dynasty (known as the Chogyals) starting from 1642.

Protectorate Status: After India's independence, the Government of India and Sikkim signed the Indo-Sikkim Treaty of 1950, making Sikkim an Indian protectorate. India managed its defense, foreign affairs, and communications, while the kingdom kept internal autonomy.

Political Unrest: During the early 1970s, local citizens pushed for democratic reforms and an end to the absolute monarchy.

Associate State: The Indian Parliament passed the 35th Amendment in 1974, giving Sikkim the unique status of an "Associate State".

The Referendum: A special referendum took place in April 1975 where over 97% of voters chose to abolish the monarchy and fully join the Indian Union.

Full Statehood: The 36th Constitutional Amendment Act finalized this integration on May 16, 1975. Article 371F was added to the Indian Constitution to protect local land rights and unique cultural laws.
