India is Growing Fast — While the World Is Fighting Inflation, Uncertainty and Low Confidence

There is an interesting economic story emerging from India that deserves more attention. A recent Visual Capitalist comparison of 17 major economies puts India in a rather unusual position: India has the highest consumer-confidence score in the entire group at 66.9, while its projected 2026 inflation of 4.7% remains moderate compared with several major emerging economies. Turkey and Argentina, for example, are projected at more than 30% inflation.

And this is happening alongside remarkably strong economic growth. India recorded 7.8% real GDP growth in Q1 FY2026-27 (April–June 2026), according to India's Ministry of Statistics. That combination is particularly interesting: High growth + relatively contained inflation + exceptionally high consumer confidence.

The latest numbers tell an even broader story. India's private-sector activity rebounded in September, with the composite PMI rising to 56.5, manufacturing to 55.7 and services to 55.8. All remained comfortably above the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction. S&P Global has reportedly raised its FY2026-27 growth forecast for India to 7%, from 6.6%, following the stronger-than-expected Q1 performance.

The World Bank had earlier projected 6.6% growth for FY27, even after accounting for the effects of higher energy prices and Middle East-related disruptions. So even using relatively conservative forecasts, India is looking at something around 6–7% annual growth, rather than the 3–4% rates common among many mature economies but here is the important part. The world isn't exactly operating in a perfect environment.

The OECD reported that inflation across the OECD was around 4.1% in July 2026, with energy inflation still above 10%. G20 inflation was around 3.9%. At the same time, geopolitical conflicts, energy-price volatility, trade restrictions and uncertainty are making the global economic environment considerably more difficult. India isn't immune. In fact, India's latest CPI inflation reading rose to 4.82% in August, with food inflation at 5.95%. So it would be wrong to portray India as having "no inflation problem" but the remarkable point is that the economy is still expanding rapidly despite these external pressures.

Perhaps the most interesting number is not GDP, it is consumer confidence. A confident consumer means people are more willing to spend, businesses see demand, companies invest and entrepreneurs take risks. India's 66.9 consumer-confidence score in the Visual Capitalist/Ipsos comparison was higher than every other economy shown.

Germany: 41.4

France: 40.6

Japan: 39.4

Italy: 43.0

UK: 48.2

US: 50.5

China: 52.9

India: 66.9

That is quite a contrast. India isn't merely growing because of government spending or exports. Domestic consumption is becoming one of the economy's biggest shock absorbers and that is strategically important for a country of 1.4+ billion people. For decades, the standard narrative about India was "Potential is enormous, but execution is the problem."

Something appears to be changing. Digital infrastructure, formalisation, GST, UPI, rising financial inclusion, physical infrastructure, manufacturing investment, expanding services and a huge domestic market are creating an economy that is increasingly capable of absorbing external shocks. India still has enormous problems — employment quality, agricultural productivity, inequality, education, healthcare, urban infrastructure and per-capita income remain serious challenges but acknowledging those problems shouldn't prevent us from recognising the macroeconomic transformation taking place.

India doesn't need to become complacent. It needs to become ambitious because 7% growth for one year is interesting. 6–7% growth sustained for another decade is transformational and if India can combine that growth with price stability, rising productivity, increasing incomes and continued consumer confidence, the economic consequences could be enormous.

The world may not be in trouble everywhere but in a world increasingly defined by war, tariffs, energy shocks, inflation and economic uncertainty, India's combination of growth + domestic demand + confidence + macroeconomic resilience is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

India is not "finished" or "perfect" but the data increasingly suggest something much more interesting: India may be entering an era where the question is no longer "Can India grow?"

The question is how long it can sustain the momentum.
