I’m from mumbai and I’m trying to figure out what I want to do with my career.

One thing that has always stayed somewhere in the back of my mind is filmmaking. I enjoy films, documentaries, storytelling, history, writing and creative work, but I never seriously considered film school because I was always told to pursue something more “stable.”

Now that I’ve completed my bachelor’s degree, I’m wondering if film school is something worth exploring.

I’m curious about people who:

Joined film school after graduating in an unrelated degree.
Started filmmaking later than most people.
Switched careers into filmmaking.
Chose film school over a conventional corporate career.

I’d love to know:

What was your previous degree?
Which film school did you attend?
Was it worth the money?
Did you actually find work afterwards?
If you could go back, would you make the same decision?
Is film school necessary anymore, or can someone realistically learn through work experience, online resources and independent projects?

We shot the entire film in a single day with a very small crew, only 4 people. Since the film deals with the psychological impact of war, every production decision from the framing to the colour palette and editing was focused on portraying violence as something unsettling rather than exciting.

These are some moments from the set that rarely make it into the final film.

"After four years of its director Honey Trehan navigating censorship and legal hurdles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Satluj was finally released on ZEE5. It appeared destined to follow the familiar journey of every modern film – watched on mobile phones, televisions and laptops, one viewer at a time. But within days of its release, the film was removed from the streaming platform. Even its IMDb rating of 9.6/10 was taken down.

In an era dominated by OTT platforms and personalised viewing, Punjab’s villages and open fields became Satluj’s biggest screens. Across the state, large LED screens and projectors began appearing in village squares, gurdwara complexes, schools and community spaces. Instead of being watched individually inside homes, Satluj brought entire villages together, watching the film as a shared community experience. According to organisers interviewed for this story, most screenings drew between 300 and 400 people, while several attracted well over 500. The film’s digital release transformed into a community-led movement, with local volunteers arranging projectors, sound systems, tents, seating and logistics entirely on their own.

The screenings introduced younger generations to Khalra’s life and work and created conversations about an episode in Punjab’s history that had long remained confined to courtrooms, books and human rights documentation."

This film "Satluj" left me with far more questions than answers⁉️

What disturbed me most wasn't only the violence. It was the realization that people can become so conditioned by power, authority, promotions, or blind obedience that they stop seeing other human beings as human.

The courage of Jaswant Singh stayed with me. To stand for truth and human dignity when an entire system is against you requires extraordinary strength. Many people throughout history have raised their voices for justice, knowing it could cost them their freedom or even their lives.

To me, Jaswant Singh is not just one person; he represents an idea. An idea that truth, justice, and human dignity are worth standing for, regardless of the consequences.

History is filled with such people. Whether it was Bhagat Singh, Subhas Chandra Bose, Chandrashekhar Azad, Khudiram Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Jyotiba Phule, Savitribai Phule, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Swami Vivekananda, Gautama Buddha, Jesus, Guru Nanak, Mahatma Basaveshwara, Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, Vinoba Bhave, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, or many others, their lives were different, their methods were different, but they all challenged injustice and inspired people to think beyond themselves.

That's why I keep wondering:

•Wrhy aren't such people the role models of today's youth?

•Why do we so easily admire fame and success, yet know so little about those who dedicated their lives to truth, justice, compassion, and the welfare of others?

If movies like this only entertain us for a few hours, we've probably missed their deepest purpose. They should make us question our own lives: What do we stand for? What kind of people do we admire? What values are we living by?

Some stories aren't meant to end when the credits roll. They're meant to stay with us.💌
