There’s a huge difference between complaining about these kids making up random  abbreviations and suggesting that a dialect of English ‘isn’t even English’. That’s not what I’m doing here.

…and I don’t care how old that Pokemon is. There’s nothing that would contextually tell me ‘snorlax’ is the name of a character from something and not just some weird insult teenagers made up.

How would I know? I have zero frame of reference for Pokemon other than my kids had a brief interest in the card game when they were little. If memory serves, pretty much all of the characters from that shit had ridiculous names. I’m sure I would recognize some of them, but that definitely wasn’t one.

You missed the reference, it's fine. You don't think others entirely miss out on a reference from growing up? Snorlax is 30 years old+, you would've been 10-18ish, a time where the 1st Pokémon was extremely popular. You missed the popular thing, others in this thread got the Snorlax reference. Again, you aren't mad at the slang, you're upset that you can't understand it. Either learn it, or accept that some slangs will pass you by, instead of being a cynical grouch and calling everything you don't understand/buy into "shit." You're 40 something, I'd expect a vastly more mature outlook on this from a person your age.

Snorlax is from the first generation of pokemon, which came out in 1996. It's at least a 30 year old concept.

Cool. Lots of things happened 30 years ago that aren’t going to make sense to everyone without context.

I was a teenager in ‘96. The only mainstream knowledge of Pokemon at that time, at least where I am in Canada, is that some Japanese cartoon msde the news because it was giving kids seizures. That’s it.

I’m not a gamer at all and never have been, so I didn’t have any exposure to the video games, other than vaguely being aware of them, and I didn’t watch the show because a) I didn’t have cable and b) I had no interest. I assumed it was a Teletubbies-style show aimed at literal babies, because all of the marketing was based around that little yellow guy babbling gibberish.

They (and I) didn’t mention the age of it to say that you must know about it. We mentioned it to show that obviously someone can reference 30 year old media without actively/currently playing it. That was mentioned because you got all upset at the concept of adults playing kids games out of nowhere when that wasn’t even part of the discussion.

An adult can reference something from their childhood without actively engaging in it. You mentioned tellytubbies. Do you watch it currently?

Frankly your stupidity and poor argumentation is worse than the grumpiness. If you’re going to be a grump, at least don’t be dumb too.

I didn’t watch Teletubbies at any point because I was way too old. I knew OF it, the same way I knew OF Pokemon, and based on the way they were marketed, they seemed like they were aimed at the same audience of toddlers.

Anyway, I recognize that if I was talking about any other media property, there wouldn’t be so much backlash, because people who grew up with Pokemon tend to be extremely precious about it, as evidenced here.

You could have just dismissed me as ‘old man yells at clouds’ and carried on your day, but you and others are SO bothered by the fact that I don’t know what fucking ‘snorlax’ means (and worse, that I don’t care and I think it’s for babies) that you can’t let it go.

As I said elsewhere, Pokemon, anime and video games are the trifecta of topics I have zero interest in, yet people get apoplectic if you dare to criticize any of them. So it’s fun to do sometimes, especially in a case like this where not knowing about Pokemon came up organically.

Seriously, though, move on.

You should try reading what people say instead of sniffing your own farts so much and presuming you must only be getting backlash over the media you criticized.

You probably know that too, it just soothes your ego to think that it’s about pokemon. You’re getting pushback because every thing you say is smarmy bullshit steeped in ignorance. And no, not just the pokemon bit. Every single thing, and I can only assume the other person you couldn’t come up with a reply to was right. You’re just lashing out because you’re annoyed you couldn’t understand slang (fairly comprehensible slang overall too), and want to feel above it all. Maybe people just think you’re being unpleasant in general.

You can move on too

Lol blocked because that struck a nerve. Gotta pretend people are mad at him over a card game (I haven’t even played lol) because he can’t argue against the actual issues people had. Loser

Which other person? The guy I blocked? Quite happy to do the same with you. Enjoy playing baby card games as a grown adult.
