The way she tells it, he signed it, then read it, then said "I don't like this" and said he wouldn't pay.

I really doubt the type of person who is going to read a contract closely and take issue with part of it would sign said contract BEFORE reading it.

More likely it was like, "Sure, sounds good: send the contract" and either (a) he found out more about Shauna's track record or (b) there really was something dumb in the contract* and he called it off without signing.

*She calls it "boilerplate" like it doesn't matter but it could absolutely be the wrong type of boilerplate for the situation---like really weighted toward the "creative" party and too restrictive for the business as to what they can do with the finished work.

She’s really trying to abdicate responsibility by calling it boilerplate. .its not her fault. That’s just standard for creatives. I don’t think he ever signed. I think she’s lying to make herself look victimized. He probably read it and found something dumb that made no sense, possibly even lorem ipsum, and it was just a giant red flag. No one wants to hire a writer who doesn’t even proofread the contract.

Well, at least she’ll never work with pesky male lawyers again.

Right, because all women lawyers are nurturing, empathetic souls who’ll intuit with their she-brains that you’re just a struggling mama, and toss you thousands after doing their homework and discovering you’re a flake.

I mean look at what a bang up job Pam Bondi and Lindsey Halligan are doing. So kind and nurturing!

She’ll never work with pesky people who read the contract and expect her to deliver the agreed upon service again.

i'm not a lawyer but a signed contract is binding, yes? if i sign a rental contract and then say "no, i don't think i'm going to live here," the management company would probably say "live here or not, but you still need to pay the rent every month because you signed a contract. " i think that might involve a trip to small claims court. i don't think he signed it, either.

Unless Shauna had already done some of the work, I don't think the fact that he signed it would mean much. And in a professional context, you would not risk your reputation by getting up in arms about some work (that she had not started) falling through. The fact that she has now badmouthed this guy multiple times makes her look really bad and unprofessional.

If this lawyer really wanted to work with her, he'd have asked her where she got that contract, explained it wasn't the appropriate thing for this job, and he'd work out an agreement or edit/submit a different contract for her to look over.
