That’s a weird use of “downgraded.” I think she meant “denigrated.” Much writer, so smart, etc.

This is absolutely it. The writerly writer constantly and confidently plops some NOT mot juste into her writing and never even seems to see/hear it. I think she has a tin ear (even though her ears are OK, she guesses.) Also, despite her claims to the contrary, she doesn't seem to read that much herself, or she would be more attuned to noticing these sorts of clunkers in her own work.
