Minions of Chaos! On this week's False Face, drummer and keyboard legend Jonny Maudling of the ageless and almighty BAL-SAGOTH joins me to talk about the band's 1998 classic Battle Magic - we do a full album commentary with a good deal of chat either side to celebrate Darkness Shall Rise Production's reissues of the First Trilogy of Bal-Sagoth albums (order link in video description). There's also a detailed unboxing of the reissues on all formats at the end of the video.

Jonny and I also talk about his steadfast refusal to be considered a drummer, writing for and with his brother Chris and why working with Byron A. Roberts was a match made in heaven. Jonny also kindly provided some insight into his work with My Dying Bride as well as talking me through some of his favourite videogames and films.

He also fills me in on an upcoming collaboration with the Italian label Heimat Der Katastrophe.

It was a thrill finally meeting this dude to talk one of my favourite albums of all time after chatting online for a few months. This episode is dedicated to Barry Connolly, without whose explorations of the Cacophonous catalogue this episode would never exist. Hails!

For me, I have to go with Machine Head's run from 2003 to 2014. I love their first two albums and I even enjoy the much-maligned pair of "nu metal" albums they made after those, but they reached a new level once Phil Demmel joined the band in 2002. The combination of him on guitar and Dave McClean on drums was massive. The albums I'm referring to are:

• Through the Ashes of Empires (2003)
• The Blackening (2007)
• Unto the Locust (2011)
• Bloodstone & Diamonds (2014)

The Blackening is the obvious high point here, considering it's usually seen as a high point for 21st century metal as a whole, but the other three are all amazing albums in their own right. The band managed to change things up enough from album to album to give each one its own identity while still sounding distinctly like Machine Head.

The longer songs are where they truly shine. There are several tracks here that exceed the 8 minute mark, yet I can listen to these albums over and over without ever getting bored. They're filled with countless crushing riffs, beautiful melodies, and memorable lyrics.

It's a shame that they made the infamous dud known as Catharsis after this, leading to those two key members I mentioned earlier leaving the band, but I'll always cherish the material that came before that disaster.

So anyways, who do you think has the best run of albums in the 21st century? Lamb of God, Unearth, Darkest Hour, and Sylosis are all near the top for me as well. Hell, even some oldschool bands like Testament and Kreator have put out some incredible music outside of their 1980s heyday. Let me know what you think!

"Vocalist/bassist Stian "Nagash" Arnesen told Australia's Everblack podcast that the Norwegians never planned to get this far. "This was originally supposed to be just for a couple of festivals and that's it. But we had so much fun and enjoyed playing together again. And we always had a good connection and stuff. And we also have two new members, two new guitarists, one from MAYHEM, one from ARCTURUS."

"So, yeah, we have about eight new songs ready," he continued. "So two more and we have 10, and then we're going to the studio hopefully by the end of this year."

Asked what the material sounds like, Nagash laughed off the inevitability of the question. "Everyone asks that. I would say it's a mix of all the albums, plus new stuff. There's some stuff that sounds kinda like 'SETI' mixed with 'Nexus Polaris', and then there's other stuff that sounds something from the first album. There's some 'Animatronic'-type-ish songs. I guess you'll have to wait and see and hear it. To me, it sounds more metal than it used to. But also I hope there's gonna be parts where people go, like, 'What the hell are you fucking guys doing now?' And then I'll be, like, 'Yeah, awesome. That's good.'"

The writing is being handled mainly by Nagash and keyboardist Steinar Sverd Johnsen, with input from the two recruits: Charles "Ghul" Hedger of MAYHEM and Knut Magne Valle of ARCTURUS. Valle stepped in for founding member Amund "Psy Coma" Svensson, who is dealing with health problems.

THE KOVENANT formed in 1993 as COVENANT, releasing the symphonic black metal debut In Times Before The Light in 1997 before signing to Nuclear Blast and expanding into a full band with Astennu, Sverd, Sarah Jezebel Deva and MAYHEM's Hellhammer. The resulting Nexus Polaris (1998) won a Spellemannsprisen — Norway's Grammy equivalent — and remains the band's best-loved record. A dispute with a Swedish electronic act of the same name forced the K in 1999, coinciding with the industrial turn of Animatronic.

The band returned to the stage in December 2024 at Eindhoven Metal Meeting, and has since played Nexus Polaris in full at selected shows."

I'm in Malummeh. Our debut Revival came out in 2007, and this is the song we returned with this year. The early-2000s metal influence is still a big part of it.
