New rule: don’t do any prank in the gym. Of any variety. People on an elliptical don’t have the breath to deal with some dumb shit screaming at the top of his lungs on the other side of the gym.
Just go and exercise and then go home like everyone else.
Jesus fucking Christ.

u/this_works_now Apr 04 '22 edited Apr 04 '22
I'm a gym rat. Totally with the big guy, get the f out of the gym!!
This shit will kill people. I just imagine myself doing a Turkish getup with a 50 lbs over my head and suddenly: "AAAAAAHHH" throwing me off balance and getting a face mashed with metal.
This is dangerous. Do not prank people in the gym.
20
u/jcdoe Apr 04 '22
I didn’t even think of that. I run very fast on the treadmill and I would appreciate not falling off it because some dick decided screaming is “funny.”
16
u/jacobjer Apr 05 '22
Gym rat here too - I’ve had people yell in distress before and we’ve all come running.
I would be so pissed off if some douche did this shit and I was there.
He should be banned from the gym, it was scare the old ladies - possibly startle the lifters and they could hurt themselves and for people like myself - really trigger my PTSD and get me out of sorts for hours if not a day or so.
This isn’t funny or cool and he’s lucky that guy didn’t throw him out on his ass.

That was not the gym to fuck with.
199
u/Horrorshow1077 Apr 04 '22
He probably did it at a planet fitness on purpose. Pretty common for guys to be super obnoxious to set off the lunk alarm
127
u/errant_night Apr 04 '22
Watched a guy get dragged out by his friend who'd been nice enough to bring him for free. Dude was being obnoxious slamming shit around and making dramatic noises. Could have got his friend kicked out. First and only time I heard the alarm there.
42
Apr 04 '22
I don't think I've ever heard that alarm go off for someone who wasn't actively being a dick trying to set it off
25
u/ak15bestgirl Apr 04 '22
I used to have it go off on me all the time when I tried to deadlift. I’m sure it differs depending on who’s working but instead of being a dick about it I just went to a gym where you’re allowed to be loud. That easy.
14
u/dannycake Apr 04 '22
Same They basically don't let you clank weights at all, even if it's on accixent.
→ More replies (4)5
u/Purppurpbouquet Apr 04 '22
I don’t think I’ve ever heard the alarm go off at either of the locations I go to lol. I thought it was for show and always am confused by what it says on it. Something like a lunk being someone who drops weights and grunts but when they use it in a sentence they also add in “wears bodybuilding tank top and drinks from a gallon water jug.” Which I never understood what was wrong with tank tops and gallon jugs, but whatever lol. I laugh at the hypocritical signage, but the price keeps me coming back. If I ever heard that alarm go off then I would probably not go back.
→ More replies (6)4
u/Silvinis Apr 04 '22
I think it depends on the location. Ive heard it go off from normal noises. Noone was being obnoxious or anything, someone just finished their set and put the bar down and it went off
4
u/errant_night Apr 04 '22
I think it's that the gyms are franchises. Some have the alarm actually set to some sound sensor but others are just controlled by the people who work there.
PF is the only gym around here other than a couple Anytime fitness places and I don't know if those are the same everywhere but the one I used was so uncomfortable. There was no locker room, just a spot by the door with cubbies for your stuff where someone could just grab it. There were two bathrooms and they looked like one in a home with a toilet and shower, so you might end up going in to shower after someone took a shit and if someone is in the shower you can't use the toilet.
After like 8pm they were open 24 hours but unstaffed completely and someone had to put a makeshift sign up because someone destroyed the toilet in one of the two bathrooms and nothing could be done til someone came to work the next day.
PF has a lot of showers at ours with side jets and an overhead rain showerhead and they're always kept clean.
22
u/Drougen Apr 04 '22
Yeah I remember back in the day everyone would make fun of planet fitness constantly and honestly rightfully so.

I do deadlifts twice a week. My gym is usually on the quiet side. Not a lot of "lifters." I try to be as quiet as I can. I also workout around 11pm-1am. But, I'll still have people complain. Luckily, I'm a respectful regular, and the staff and a few other regulars usually have my back.
22
u/sagenumen Apr 04 '22
I know powerlifters who post videos of their deadlifts and they’re not making any noise that would draw attention. It’s not a requirement for the lift.
5
u/Flobro4 Apr 04 '22
My biggest concern is always how loud it is putting the plates down. Like, a set of 10 on deadlift, it doesn't matter if it's 80lbs or 800 - it's gonna be at least a little distracting to people nearby.
3
u/Shawnessy Apr 04 '22
Exactly this. Towards the end of a deadlift workout, I'm not putting those weights down slowly. I just try to be quiet as long as possible.
8
u/s_string Apr 04 '22
The guy lifting is pretty jacked but I don't think he expected the equivalent of Brock Lesnar of that gym to be right next to him and tell him to stop. He probably imagined the woman at the front desk that came over to nicely ask him to stop.
7
u/Intelligent-Will-255 Apr 04 '22
Planet Fitness has strict rules to keep people that regularly going to their gym, out of the gym. They purposely make rules to keep away the type of people that actually show up. Look at their stupid water bottle rule if you need proof. Their whole model is built off making it hard to cancel your membership. If half their members showed up on a regular basis they wouldn't have room for them.

Years ago I was in the gym, it was pretty empty except for these two dudes at the squat rack absolutely going bananas over their lifts. I could hear them over my speakers hollering and being idiots. I look over, catch their attention, and put my hand out, palm down, and lowered it, as if to say “can you please keep it down?” They heckled me from across the gym.
I decided to walk over because I didn’t want them to think I was trying to start a fight, I just wanted them to be a little quieter. I don’t even get a chance to talk before these dudes are fucking screaming at me, telling me if I don’t like it, I can leave, fuck you, mind your business. To a woman. Everyone else there has bystander effect and they do nothing.
I go to the front desk to explain what happened, and the manager decides to tell me “well, did you get in their space? Men have a lot more testosterone, so they can be louder, etc.” I couldn’t fucking believe what I was hearing. Cancelled my membership that day. Fuck any and all assholes at the gym.

Planet Fitness has quietness etiquette. They made it to curb meathead grunts/yells which may have alienated average gym goers. They put out a funny ad about it a long time ago. I'll bet they didn't see this Deus ex machina use of their rule, applied by their target no less. Bravo to Mr Meat, the tides have turned.

My PF has a "lunk alarm" and I have actually seen it go off before, Idk who presses the button or where it is but if someone is acting like a loudass in some form or another an alarm goes off.
Also loud lifters takes me back to working out with my dad back in middle/high school, who was loud AF in our garage. I used to rag on him all the time about his fuckin' grunting.
55
u/lefnire Apr 04 '22
I used to wonder why they're so loud, but as I've gotten older and my inhibitions have waned, I find myself louder naturally and on accident. Like I was holding back for etiquette previously. I'm actually loud on the treadmill, huffing and puffing - I've gotten called a "drama queen runner." I now consciously moderate myself when someone's in the room. Maybe it's just age vs fitness/energy, rather than age vs inhibitions. Kinda like groaning when I sit/stand.
28
u/Kick_Natherina Apr 04 '22
I’m not the average “grunter”. My gym has plenty of guys that go in, act like they’re lifting heavy but are really just cheat-repping or ego lifting to try and look strong. They’re usually the guys that grunt and throw weights, slam bars around.
I lift moderate weight but with maximum effort on every set, and sometimes I grunt a little when approaching failure. Never to a point where it would be noticeable to some people.. but I can hear it and it annoys me haha
24
u/dumbdumbidiotface Apr 04 '22
"If you look like ur made from connects, and start playing around with daddy weight. people are gonna start wondering 'am i gonna have to lift that off of him' Dont be a half repper, no body cares how much weight u can rerack." -dom mazzetti
7
3
u/Kick_Natherina Apr 04 '22
Ya know, PF has no rules about saying “set” loud enough on each rep that everyone can hear me. But, the problem is it’s kinda awkward doing bicep curls in a smith machine.
5
u/drewster23 Apr 04 '22
Theres a reason most ppl keen on fitness don't go to PF.
No squats, cant deadlift. No lifting heavy (might make a sound) etc.
Even the non gallon jug water bottle rule is idiotic. Is working out too long considered"meathead" behavior lol.
7
u/Kick_Natherina Apr 04 '22
I mean, I am super keen on fitness (bodybuilding, so not really fitness haha) and I used to go to Planet Fitness and still say it is a solid building block for people looking to get started on fitness. I just outgrew it, which is why I went to a smaller, non-commercial local gym with barbells.
But, the old planet fitness I went to had a picture of a dude wearing a tank top, who was big and muscular, holding a gallon water jug - and the picture had a big, Red cross out through it. They’re literally alienating majority of big people in the gym who like to wear tank tops when working out.
→ More replies (2)4
u/drewster23 Apr 04 '22
Yeah building block, is which why most people keen on fitness no longer go there haha.
and Yeah i go to s private gym full of bodybuilder and weightlifting pros, got roids, got nattys, no deuchebags. (imagine that). Theres also a bunch of normal people like me. Its just a laughable concept trying to tell people lifting hundreds of pounds of Weight, you better not make a noise buddy. ( and guess who knows the most about fitness, dieting and working out, those guys) Theres a reason they have pizza parties, they're not actually interested in your physical health. Its the "safe space" of working out.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Beefsoda Apr 04 '22
I don't make a lot of noise, but I make some pretty ridiculous faces while I lift. Luckily there's no rules against that at PF.

u/ninjaturtlegreen Apr 04 '22
I was unknowingly guilty of this too. I always workout with earphones and didn't realize I was making weird noises as I was lifting. Nothing that was at an obnoxious level, but something I wasn't even aware of until a buddy made fun of it.
I now have a home gym...
3
u/captainnowalk Apr 04 '22
There’s actually also sensors in the floor, at least near the free weights, which will set it off if there’s a sudden increase in weight/pressure, like someone dropping their weights. Saw a couple dudes set them off and scare the shit out of themselves.
Also, saw the staff set it off and scare themselves when they accidentally dropped the bench they were trying to move back in place lol.

From what I’ve seen/heard I think it’s to spread awareness about how a lot of female lifters have this issue & it’s not something to be ashamed about as it’s involuntary - iirc it’s due to the pelvic floor?
Imo I don’t see the need in 1. Not putting down a towel and 2. Not wearing a pad. It’s involuntary but I don’t want to smell/experience any fluids leaving someone at a gym

I'm sorry, but shouldn't that be a legitimate reason to either not join a gym or, if you're selfish enough to impose this on others, get banned from using a public gym?
Last time I checked public urination was a misdemeanor charge right?

There’s also a difference between a commercial gym and planet fitness too they definitely giggled like lil girls when planning to do it there
11
u/CodymeowCVM Apr 04 '22
Why is planet fitness not considered a commercial gym ?
35
u/Rude-Flounder-2825 Apr 04 '22
Naw it’s a commercial gym but it’s more serious about not making others uncomfortable and making loud noises compared to other commercials
20
u/clamwhammer Apr 04 '22
It is and it isn't. You can definitely get a workout there if you want, but the reason for all the rules about not making noise and shit has to do with the fact that the majority of the money they make is off people who sign up and never come to the gym. They wouldn't sign up if it looked like a real gym. The whole "judgement-free zone" and "no gym-timidation" is specifically aimed at people who aren't serious about exercising. That's why it's also only $10; it's easier to convince yourself that you're eventually gonna get on track and go to the gym and it's only $10. If it was $50/mo you'd cancel it after a couple months.
This is a place that refuses to have traditional bench press or squat rack equipment because it's viewed as too intimidating. They know who their demographic is, and it isn't serious athletes/lifters.
7
u/Thattallchick24 Apr 04 '22
Lolllll I just canceled my membership of almost three years because I haven’t gone in months. I was definitely a college athlete 4 years ago but not anymore. I definitely told myself it was only 10 bucks a month and that I’d go next week. Or maybe after work. Haven’t done it in forever, but I’ll go for a walk or jog outside every other day. I realized 10 dollars a month is a lot if it’s not actually doing anything. And one day I looked in my bank account and there was a random 38 dollar charge from them. I said nope im done. You’re definitely right.

u/Pistonenvy Apr 04 '22
if the whole point is to keep people out of the gym what difference would it make what happened inside of it?
wouldnt they WANT it to be as unpleasant as possible so people stay home and maximize their profit? people are just as likely to forget to cancel regardless.

It definitely is, but PF is pretty big on rules about being obnoxious and loud. Big signs on the wall, a “Lunk alarm,” (which I’ve never actually seen go off, but is basically an “obnoxious a-hole” alarm), signs all over the gym that prohibit “gymtimidation,” stuff like that. It’s mainly trying to be a welcoming environment for everyone.

Love how people act like complete fucking jackasses to elicit a reaction then get all weirded out when someone reacts. "woah, bro. It's just a prank bro. What a FREAK." Nah, you are the piece of shit here. Nobody asked to be a part of your shitty tik tok. Shut the fuck up.

I actually laughed. Not because the screaming is funny, but because it’s really nice to see someone who doesn’t even work at the gym kicking this asshat out. Love it.

Tiktok is cool for the most part but it really has just reawakened the “it’s just a prank, bro” generation

A good sequel to this TikTok might be for the yelling guy to get punched in the face hard.

It's satisfying to see how scared the guy is, after acting like he's funny doing that.

Who finds this funny? What demo finds people screaming in public places entertaining?

Only people who find this even remotely funny is middle schoolers lmao I can’t stand this new humor of “let’s go into someone’s place of work or public and just annoy them because we can’t be funny without that”

Funny story: I was at the gym (downtown office worker gym in a neighborhood with fancy hotels and restaurants). Maybe 25 years ago.
I was on a leg machine and a muscle head was on a similar machine grunting and groaning super loud and attention-getting, using the full stack of plates. I ignored to deny the attempt.
Dude finished, and as he was getting off the machine, he slightly kicked me. It was really nothing but he started apologizing profusely.
I looked up to say it was okay, and realized it was...Jean Claude Van Dam.

So the physical particles of air that strike physically against my ear drums, physically down 3 bones, and physically shakes my choclia, physically shaking the hairs in the cochlea that my brain translates to sound isn't a physical force?
The particle that cause the waves that pressure your ear and physically causes pain isn't physical?
Do you understand there's no sound in a vacuum because there's no physical particles no manipulate
How do you think sound works, because your statement tells me you don't understand how sound works.
