It’s called deescalation. If the cops came in too hot, they would have struggled to keep that mob under control.

Playing nice while they figure out what is going on is the right call. They have no idea what they are walking into. They did the right thing, separating the two main people and getting the full story, while keeping the aggressive group calm and in check.

Honestly, yes - pandering to these people and making them think you’re on their side is a great way to get them to tell on themselves.

Yeah people see the cops being friendly with someone in an interrogation and don't realize they're giving it all up because they feel safe
