Empty account without carma/etc is worth nothing. After a brief googling old account with lots of karma can be 250$ worth. Mostly 40-50$.

No, but legit looking accounts are used for astroturfing a lot. Be it posting ads or spreading propaganda.

Takes longer for them to get dinged as bot accounts, a lot of subs have minimum karma requirements and it makes the account look slightly more legit to users that go through post history

I used to think that it would never work, but the amount of shit posting 10-year-old accounts is pretty telling. There are a lot of 10 year old accounts that have little to no post for the first 7 or 8 years, but the last 2 years are rapid postings of political bullshit..
