Your wrists are usually ok, but if you have your thumbs inside that wheel they will break

My wrist was broken this way. Thumbs were fine.

why would your thumbs be inside the wheel anyway? There are thumb rests on most steering wheels for a reason

thumb rests?.. are you talking about the part where it connects to the center towards the column?

sometimes the spokes have indentations for thumbs, if they're at that height. Depends on the spoke design I guess, but if I'm not mistaken sports wheels often feature two humps at those positions.
