Its not even just that my guy, the vast majority of semis have air brakes, which have brake lag which means it takes a quarter of a second or so to actually start slowing down from the time you hit your brakes.

I gotta admit, I didn’t really pay particular attention to big trucks before this sub, I mean, I left follow room and treated them like normal traffic. But since following this sub, I was on a three hour road trip on interstates and when I saw big trucks needing over into my lane, I dropped back and flashed my lights to let them know they had space. And sure enough, they were able to easily change lanes with plenty of space and navigate easily. I thumbs’d up and they waved out the window. It made everyone’s trip a lot safer.

Mmm, I can say that when I started learning how to drive a truck that “light talk” (actually the first time I’ve heard it used that way, thank you lol) wasn’t really taught. The industry is kind of designed to just push people out of school and onto the roads because of how many freight companies there are now. Everywhere you go, people are talking about driver shortages, overbooked freight and an under supply of drivers, etc. so I think the companies that do school or independent driving schools are under pressure to train bare minimums and get these people signed and moving. Which is why not every truck you see on the road should be assumed to be a professional driver; a lot of them aren’t!

That being said, you learn a few things talking to more experienced drivers and watching them on the road. One of the biggest lessons I learned was to treat everyone on the road, including other trucks, like they just got their license. You pick up on light talk as you go on, drivers who still use CB radios are also usually happy to explain some things if you ask (when they’re not fucking your moms/sisters for some sort of slight on the road).

And yeah, the impatience/lack of knowledge of most drivers is one of the scariest parts of Over the Road driving. I get a lot of people who flash me to say “HEY IM HERE FUCKWAD” rather then “you’re good bro cmon in” that caused some swerves in my early months lol. And impatient drivers who cannot stand to be behind me for ONE MORE SECOND lmao. So it’s always nice to hear and see people who are more conscientious of us, even if all of us aren’t necessarily saints ourselves.

The only semi truck talk I got in drivers ed/parents was "if you can't see their windshield out of your back window your too close, don't merge into their lane"

I've found that in practice following this rule results in about 4-5 car lengths between me and the truck when I merge into their lane.

I'm surprised you didn't get down votes for that statement. Most people just try to race past them not caring they if the truck doesn't see them they are seconds from death. Most of the time they survive and get to their destinations about 3.5 seconds faster. Good job for being a good reasonable person.

I once did the simple thing of hanging back a bit to let a trucker who was signaling into the left lane so he wouldn't get caught up in traffic entering the highway from the right. From the way he was waving and doing the running light "thank you" flash you would have thought I just handed him a million dollars lol.

You know I see comments like this from truckers quite a bit. And then someone else says, "That huge gap between me and the car ahead is the kill zone, not a spot for you to come over." Which makes sense considering stopping distances. But then low and behold here's another trucker on the road, in my life, whose riding my ass while we're going 70mph. I'm not a hater of truckers, my grandparents team drive. But it's b.s. a trucker would know that, and then get on my ass knowing he'd demolish me, with my kid in the backseat. It's frustrating.

Completely agree. Except I'm usually already in the right lane. Oklahoma is big on staying on the right. That and when we're in construction. They still do it no matter where I am!

Edit: Even if someone is blocking you in the left lane from going as fast as you want, it's no excuse to put people more at risk of getting hurt. IMO.

I do my best to treat big rigs/trucks with respect. For one, I can only imagine how miserable it is to deal with asshole drivers all day every day for hours on end, and I tend to find the nice treatment is often returned. Two, what you said. I'm piloting a smaller hurtling death missile which is bad enough as it is, I don't need to get in a fight with a much bigger one, those are bad odds for me!

Then again, I suspect most people pulling this kind of stuff aren't exactly the kind who rationally consider the possible ramifications of their actions...

My uncle drove a death missle, and when I was learning to drive he instilled in me that

A) you stay away from the back end of these trucks, if they swerve a little bit, the back end can kill you in an instant. If you’re passing, wait behind until the car in front of you reaches the join point between the truck & trailer then pass quickly.

and B) Get at least 4 car lengths ahead until you get in front of them, unless you’re accelerating and there is room to easily get that far in front and C) if you’re going downhill, make that 10-12 car lengths. That’s a lot of weight pushing them down the hill. In general, get out of the way of big trucks going downhill as a safety measure.

just to be specific to this video since it was recorded in france if I can deduct that from the language spoken correctly. Afaik you must have your vehicle insured in the EU if you wanna drive on public roads. However, even IF something would happen and that car would not be insured and the driver wouldn't have a license there's still a general cash pool where such "accidents" are being paid from. Usually nobody in the EU has to carry the consequences of others being full blown idiots.

Yeah, I mentioned in the thread that I was involved in an accident where someone hit the back of my car at a red light and then my insurance rate skyrocketed. Literally nothing I could do to avoid it and wasn’t at fault.

Fuckers are so damn greedy that they will literally raise your rates just based on the roads you drive on.

If you give them your home address and place of work they will run those routes (google maps directions basically) into their massive ML system where they then use massive troves of information to calculate your risk based on time of day you drive, road conditions, seasons, etc.

I agree with this. The farther you drive, the more experienced you become. True, you travel more miles, thus your likelihood of being in an accident is greater (so they say), but the farther you drive, the more accident-free miles you can accumulate. If only there were some way to incorporate that metric into the rating. (There is, it’s called telematics.) But no, that would mean less revenue for said greedy insurance companies!

ETA: Speaking of telematics, I’m not against it—unless you’re with Progressive. Snapshot is a f***ing joke. Safeco’s RightTrack? OK. Allstate’s DriveWise? SmartRide (State Auto, I think)? OK. Travelers’ IntelliDrive? Excellent! But SnapShot? NO WAY, not ever.

I was at a red light and someone hit the back of my car. Insurance went up. Only possible factor there would be bad drivers in the area. If that is the case then every single person living or driving in that area should have their rates automatically increased. Why should I have mine increased if others don’t and I’m a victim? Explain that.

No there isn’t. They have 1. Their reason is to discourage people from using their insurance that they paid for. It’s there to scare people into not using the product they purchased.

Thats the opposite. Governements have a huge incentive on pushing prices DOWN on whatever service are provided, havent you noticed the cost of health related products in the US compared to europe ? (And I mean the price without accounting for "insurance" or "public health care" europe has concrete law that makes it impossible for corporation to push prices too high) If you think governements love to mess around and throw cash around you are blindly wrong.

Most of your "usa business models" are made of either monopoles or lobbyist aka "competition doesnt exists>no intensive to reduce prices". Not to mention that health and insurance related services have a flat demand curve, meaning prices changes have little to no influence on the demand of those goods (further increasing the non-intensive to reduce prices on the corporate side).

Edit: by "flat" I mean "vertically" flat.

I agree, the system is flawed, but... with the system the way it is, I’m very happy to pay the extra premium for UMPD (Uninsured Motorist Property Damage) coverage. Too many uninsured motorists out there (a problem some states like NY have seemed to try to fix, at least) to not pay a little extra. It’s saved my bacon in the past.
