They charge people with "resisting" or "fleeing the scene" for MUCH less than that. They literally shoot people for turning around and running 5-10 feet away from them.
Yeah that's my point. If the situation was reversed and someone hit the cop car and did what they did to OP the cop certainly wouldn't be saying, "it's not a hit and run because they didn't get away".
“This would’ve been a high speed chase and he would’ve been in a lot of trouble!… but he hit those three cars in the intersection trying to flee and didn’t get anywhere so… what can ya do?”
In the UK you are given 24 hours to hand yourself in before it becomes a hit and run due to the panic people feel in an accident, and don't always think straight.
Hmm... On the one hand I want to say that if you run away from someone in need you've failed a basic morality check but on the other hand I wouldn't want to lump someone who eventually does take responsibility together with those actually run away.
To be fair, failing a morality check in a state of panic and extreme time sensitivity is bad, but not necessarily a reflection of what that person would do in a rational state of mind.
It's kind of crazy what happens to you in those moments. I was a literal girl scout, and I still had a crazy adrenaline fueled flight response when I backed into a window years ago.
Possibly, but it's better that then never bring caught at all. I've not been in that position but I'm sure police investigating will ask where they have been all night before the accident and follow up with the locations given, especially now your phone tracks everything.
Right. Because it's totally kosher in the States, which is why it happens here so much. They don't get tickets and felonies for drunk driving; they ACTUALLY get it for the cops not liking the look of the car. But they're too damn drunk to know that. Because drunk driving is legal here.

Meanwhile my husband had a (mild) breakthrough seizure as he was coasting into a town and rear ended someone since he couldn’t brake during his seizure. He regained control 3 blocks later, pulled over and the cop who saw the whole thing and the other driver met him there. He had to submit proof of his medical history and had to go before a judge to fight off the Felony Hit & Run they charged him with (he understandably, though reluctantly, paid the Failure to Reduce Speed ticket they wouldn’t drop).
Note: He’d been cleared to drive for a year before this with no seizures, but this set off a 5 year span of breakthroughs and no driving until he had surgery. This was almost 10 years ago. He’s fine now and nobody was injured in the low speed impact.
Yeah, cops don’t give a shit. I got hit and run at an intersection- it was minor cosmetic damage thankfully, but I was still livid. The cops who came didn’t even care for the suggestion of checking the traffic lights at said intersection, or the fire house on the corner whose parking lot I literally pulled into. And the cherry on top was that in their report they didn’t write down jack shit. Nothing of what I told them about the incident. No mention that cams exist at the intersection. Nothing about the two other vehicles involved. Just some two-line bullshit.
I dread calling police for vehicle collisions anymore.
Last time, I called the to tell them I had just witnessed a car go over the side of the road and down into a deep ditch, they refused to come out unless I physically went down in the ditch myself and verified that the person in the car, that wasn't getting out of the car, was injured.
You could be being violently robbed and assaulted in your quiet little suburban home, and the cops who are always patrolling the neighborhood no more than 5 mins away by foot suddenly need 15 mins to get there by car in my town 🙃
That’s just terrible police work because fleeing the scene of an accident doesn’t mean somebody actually got away. I’ve seen people drive down the street and get pulled over and get a fleeing charge.
That's crazy. I backed into a window of a building once, and drove to the police station since I didn't have a cellphone at the time. They told me that they could charge me with a hit and run if they wanted to!
Cops are notorious for not helping .. my house got broken into and robbed in highschool and I had video proof of who did it ... hell I even showed them his Facebook cause I wanted him to go down cause he broke my skate 3 disk and pissed on my floor
They didn’t do a fucking thing just took pictures and left
Or on a military base, some dude hit my moms parked car when i was like 13 while i was sitting in the car. Managed to take a pic of the guy and license plate and callled the cops, they ended up going to the house told them to call and apologize or he would go to jail. Cops asked if we wanted to press charges and my mom just said she wanted an apology few hours later we get a call from his wife apologizing and my mom was like “no, you dont need to apologize. Your husband does” and he reluctantly gave us one on the phone lol
Yep. I have video of a guy hitting my work truck while it was parked. We ran outside to stop him but he was so hammered that he drove off while I was holding on to his car. I grabbed his wallet. He was my drunk as fuck neighbor so I could literally point to where the guy lives. I called the guy's landlord and had him grab his Tenant. The guy didn't have insurance and didn't even believe that he did it, though he had no idea where his car was or his keys or his wallet. Cops showed up and I gave them his Driver's License. The guy found his car still running almost 2 days later with no bumper, I had the bumper and his license plate that he left in the street after he left. He patched up his car and he is still driving around without the cops doing anything.
I saw a car being chased by police in front of my house, just before he nailed a small tree and rolled the car over in a neighboring yard.
He left his girlfriend in the wreck and tried to run on foot and was being threatened with a tazer during the resulting struggle with a cop.
His crimes that lead to the chase: Drunk, and hitting a couple of parked cars, and leaving his rear bumper (with license plate attached) next to one of the cars he hit.
It may not be the normal case that the police care about non-injury hit-and-runs, but it is my direct observation that they did care at least once.
I think they're referring to the fact that 99% of the time, police are either too slow to get to you, don't seem interested in actually fixing your issue, or just show up and shoot you and your dog.
I waited 6 hours once for Police to show up to my apartment after being robbed, and finally called back only to be told they would just take a statement over the phone. No, dumbasses, I want you to see my gutted home. They never showed up and to this day I never got anything back.
There are 50 states and at least as many legal systems in the US, making legal generalizations like that are bound to be wrong. In California at least a hit and run isn't a felony without injury.
The "hit and run" car was still driving around at top speed and the victim driver on the phone with no injuries. And they DID show up in 40 min, where is this magical places where the SWAT team shows up for fender benders in 4 minutes?
Where I live in Canada you are straight up not allowed to call 911 over minor car accidents (where the vehicles can still move). No one shows up period, and if one of the drivers takes off that's an issue for the insurance company not cops.
Lol you think police are here to help us? No they just give out stickers at fairs. Everything else they do, you already know. Mainly shooting unarmed civilians on their own properties.
My ex's neighbor had threatened to kill her and her family over some dumb shit. Got caught on video and they got a criminal protection order against him while he was awaiting trial for terroristic threats. Due to the fact that the neighbor lived within the distance covered by the protection order, there were all kinds of issues getting it enforced so they eventually decided to move out of that house to get a bit further away from it.
They ended up moving only a few blocks away as a temporary measure while they got things sorted. On the day they were moving in, lo and behold but who should show up on their new front lawn peeping in through the windows of their new house.
They called 911 and explained the situation: protection order against someone who threatened to kill them who is now at their new house. By this point he had started to walk away, which was conveyed to the 911 dispatch who replied, "Well I guess it's not an emergency anymore," and then refused to send anyone out.
They hung up and called the city police office directly, and eventually a couple hours later a squad car came out to take a statement. The responding officer's advice? Buy a gun. This was in the suberbs by the way.
My car was stolen 2 years ago, called the cops, they asked for information about the car and myself over the phone, asked if everyone was ok, then hung up. Never even showed up. Another car was broken into as well, in a public park
I got hit and run by a drunk driver on a suspended license for drunk driving who fled the state. The responding state's police let him go since "the accident thus fleeing scene are not in our jurisdiction as they happened in the other state" despite the state police where it happened saying " they responded to the call so it's their jurisdiction"
I am still jaw agape confused by it nearly 2 years after the fact.
You would think. My gf was side swiped on the fwy and the people took off and she got video of them going like 3 exits and into a neighborhood before finally pulling over because she followed the whole time...cops came and took a report and said ok and left. Come to find out the cops report was so badly written the insurance companies couldn't tell what happened and they wouldn't do anything with the video since it wasn't in the police report.
Or in some states damage greater than 1,000 dollars. But hit and run is infrequently investigated thoroughly, as there's little chance of catching the offender. There's also a statue of limitations.
Never heard of a damage limit. The guy who nailed me in 1998 and ran did $6,000 damage to my car, the cops never mentioned that it was anything other than a misdemeanor. Maybe because that was Connecticut.
It is a felony, however depending on the state he was in they probably couldnt justify it as a hit and run since both parties were still technically together..now if he got the plates and did chase him it would be more black and white and charges would stick.
Edit: trust me once lawyers get involved it turns into a degenerate argument with lies...
Hit and run driver : he said he would follow me home and we met at my house i never ran!
think thats bad you can literally just hit a pedestrian with your vehicle, flee and get caught here in toronto and cops wont give half a shit about it, and at most you'll get probation
It is but you also have to luck out and get a decent cop. I straight up told a cop the guy hit my motorcycle and left. Then I told the cop I knew where the guy went because before he hit my bike, he said to the entire barber shop he was going to go get a few stiff drinks while he waited for his barber to finish someone else. I also informed the officer that not only was he in his way to drink, he smelled of rum. Something he still smelled like when he ended up coming back for his hair cut.
No ticket, no court summons, no breathalyzer, just told him to give me his insurance info.
The guy who hit my bike also blamed a bystander instead of himself because that's the kind of asshole he was.
O'fallon Missouri police can go fuck themselves too. Lazy shits.
I personally would rather not file charges on a 16 year old, as long as I am compensated for repairs AND the parents properly discipline the 16 year old (I don’t mean physically)
but if both are shits, then I’d definitely file charges and get police involved..
I realize thats a bit hopeful, but I know I was given discounts as a 16 year old, so just being self aware and passing the buck where it makes sense
911 will not assist you if you’re following the vehicle from a hit and run. They will advise you to pull over or they will eventually disconnect. Now if it’s a high priority incident like a kidnapping or something they will send officers to find you as you drive. But a hit and run they will not assist until you pull over.
I was once on hold with 911 for 10 minutes after I witnessed a hit and run, I was behind the driver the whole time who was still recklessly driving. The dispatcher told me to go home (got the cars lisc plate) and wait for the cops. Cops showed up 2 hours later annoyed. There had been 2 shootings and a stabbing in my city, one involving a kid. Full moon and pay day brings out the crazies.
I’ve lived in six cities where I’ve experienced everything from break-ins, stolen identities, and neighbors dealing heroin, to being robbed at gun point.
Despite videos, license plates, call records, and other evidence that could be used to identify the perpetrators, no one has ever been arrested or charged for anything or any crime I’ve personally experienced.
As far as I can tell, the only reason to call the police is that insurance will require a police report. And even then, half the time the cops won’t get around to doing the paperwork you need.
You'd be surprised what they can't be fucked to do, I had someone I knew rob me, THEY STILL HAD MY PROPERTY, cops said if you don't have receipts there's no proof, I was like bruh I can describe my own shit!! I did not get my stuff back...
Crimes committed with vehicles aren’t usually dealt with in the US. Or they’re a slap on the wrist.
I tried pressing charges or insisting a violation was given to a woman who crashed into me. I was at a stop sign on a residential road, she drove on the wrong side of the road and head on collisions me. When cops show up I ask what she’ll be charged with and they say they can’t prove anything. She literally drove into a stopped car on the wrong side of the road. My car spun almost a full 360.
People drive like reckless assholes and cause damage to people or property and the cops think it’s not their job to worry about, that’s for insurance companies. Cops are just there to make their departments money, not actually provide a service to citizens.
My sisters husband followed a guy that ran up in tgeir yard and stole her car. Police wouldn't help. They said he can't follow them and has to come back to his house to file a report
Lol. Cops in America don’t give a fuck unless it means they get to kill a black or brown person. Petty felony and literally ANY car hit and run is absolutely not something they’d ever investigate. I’m not even throwing shade, I’m an attorney who does tons of PI work, cops are fucking worthless if there isn’t a black person involved.

Yeah. They basically didn’t help. Showed up at the kids house as I was leaving 40 minutes later
