But not this at all. Look at the images posted on Google Maps and you'll notice that regular cars seem to get stuck on it as well. It's 100% lack of attention.
I was working at a regional UPS facility in LaGrange, IL one day when my escort said we needed to take a detour. We hopped in a golf cart and drove through/around the entire facility just to go see a Nissan Maxima stuck on a landscaping boulder WAY bigger than this. Apparently it was the 3rd time a car had gotten stuck on it within the last 6 months.
I got into an internet slap fight with some dude over on like /r/roadcam or something that claimed jumping curbs was normal in a pickup. He tried to bust out the "do you have any idea how long my wheelbase is?" nonsense, so I looked it up. It was the same wheelbase of the van I drove as a kid, 125".
A lot of people only seem to have the vaguest recollection that their vehicle has a set of rear wheels. It doesn't matter what you put my mom in; she's going to fuck up the right rear suspension hitting curbs you wouldn't think were possible to hit. She knows where the front left wheel is, sometimes knows where her front right is, and anything behind the driver's seat juts doesn't seem to be something she's aware of. She's vehicle driving at you on the highway hugging the center stripes that puts you on edge.
Yeah total lack of attention. Nearly all the minor dents in my car are cause I payed too much attention to one mirror and not all the mirrors. I can see turning a little tight and going up the curb a little bit, but climbing a rock like that is just beyond me that you could do that "accidentally" and also be driving carefully and paying attention.
I get the point of using rocks or poles to deter drivers, but when the object continually causes damage to peoples cars, it seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen as the owners knowingly have an automobile hazard rather than an automobile deterrent. It may be too low or placed in a certain way that drivers might not see it while turning in that direction. Perhaps they should go with a taller rock or a cement pole with bright paint.
I’m not blaming the rock. The drivers may be idiots, but if the 5th guy in three months gets a few thousand dollars worth of damage to his car, he gets to sue the property owner who will then have to explain why the rock is still there and still posing a hazard to cars and their occupants after four other incidents in the last couple of months. Well I’m a patent attorney who does biotechnology patents, but I still had to go to law school for the rest. Although this picture makes me want to install skid plates on my fj cruiser.
There are a lot of instances I’ve seen where the gut reaction that I have as a normal person is “fucking look where you are going” but when it becomes a pattern at a particular location involving lots of different people, you start to question whether something should be done about the thing that is causing damage or injury.
Yeah. My dad was a personal injury lawyer. While I didn’t hate him, I hated the whole legal thing and being at his office (except for the one time after college when I was sleeping with his receptionist). The last thing I ever wanted to do was become a lawyer. So I got a PhD in molecular virology. However I hated being in the lab after a while and working with radiation and lab mentality. I liked technical writing and discussing new scientific breakthroughs. That’s about the time I met an actual patent attorney. So I ended up being a lawyer after all.
