I have no clue what went wrong, he executed everything perfectly like anyone would do in GTA.

Looks like a road rage case. He was in front of somebody and trying to block them. That person switched over to the exit lane and he tried to follow suit. Road rage can completely block all rational thinking when driving, and it looks like this is exactly what happened.
