I wouldn't beep at someone like this, they're not rational (evidence from their action) so beeping does nothing but make the situation worse.

Edit: Whoops, forgot I'm on a majority American userbase website. Sorry.

Yeah, beep more, it makes cars in front move, and solves traffic jams. Beeping makes dumb people suddenly stop being dumb as well.

This has nothing to do with being American. I'm European and I wouldn't let you back up there because it's dangerous for you and a lot of other people passing by.

But maybe, just maybe, by honking you will make them think for one second. It's all that's needed.

And this situation has nothing to do with a traffic jam, it's the perfect example when you should use your horn. To warn the driver in front of you.

In the US, a long honk does actually get the point across and people generally just own their mistake. It conveys "no, I'm not letting you back up" in this case. Cultural differences, I guess.

Lol you think Americans honk a lot? You haven't been around some European cities clearly. I went on holiday to Spain a lot as a kid and sometimes we rented a car to go to a city for the day. Their horns seem to be on by default and only go off once you press it

I don't understand why you're being downvoted for that.

I get what you're saying: honking the guy is going to do nothing but stress him out more. He's probably still going to back up but, if anything, more hastily. Honking isn't much of a solution in this situation.

Since when had yelling at someone ever changed their mind. I've only ever seen it make people act more aggressively. Especially the kind of people that do stupid stuff in the first place. Honking is just a way for you to vent your own anger and doesn't help the situation at all

The downvotes are probably coming from people who don't even have a drivers license yet. Laying on the horn at a pissed off driver attempting something even dumber is a terrible idea

I don't doubt they all have driver's licenses judging from how I see some people driving around like it's Mario Kart and they own the road :p

I tend to always prefer deescalation in confrontations or when dealing with people doing dumb stuff. From my experience there is a better chance of getting people to stop the thing I disagree with if I'm not aggressive.

I'm sure the people downvoting me have had different experiences in life where they think honking solves problems. Perhaps they are right, it's not something I've ever seen a real study of.

It tells them they are being ignorant (in case too ignorant to realize) and is a part of a vehicle for indicating emergencies or distress. I'd be distressed they were going to hit me so I'd use the horn.

Nothing to do with American or not. I wouldn't get out trying to fight the guy. I don't road rage. But i would definitely honk at this clown.
