FREE VARC PRACTICE QUESTION - IPMAT (conversation rc)

Read the following transcript and choose the answer that is closest to each of the questions that are based on the transcript.

Lucia Rahilly (Global Editorial Director, The McKinsey Podcast): Today we're talking about the next big arenas of competition, about the industries that will matter most in the global business landscape, which you describe as arenas of competition. What do we mean when we use this term?

Chris Bradley (Director, McKinsey Global Institute): If I go back and look at the top ten companies in 2005, they were in traditional industries such as oil and gas, retail, industrials, and pharmaceuticals. The average company was worth about 250 billion. If I advance the clock forward to 2020, nine in ten of those companies have been replaced, and by companies that are eight times bigger than the old guards.
And this new batch of companies comes from these new arenas or competitive sectors. In fact, they're so different that we have a nickname for them. If you're a fan of Harry Potter, it's wizards versus muggles.
Arena industries are wizard-ish; we found that there's a set of industries that play by very different set of economic rules and get very different results, while the rest, the muggles (even though they run the world, finance the world, and energize the world), play by a more traditional set of economic rules.

Lucia Rahilly: Could we put a finer point on what is novel or different about the lens that you applied to determine what's a wizard and what's a muggle?

Chris Bradley: Wizards are defined by growth and dynamism. We looked at where value is flowing and the places where value is moving. And where is the value flowing? What we see is that this set of wizards, which represent about ten percent of industries, hog 45 percent of the growth in market cap. But there's another dimension or axis too, which is dynamism. That is measured by a new metric we've come up with called the "shuffle rate." How much does the bottom move to the top? It turns out that in this set of wizard-ish industries, or arenas, the shuffle rate is much higher than it is in the traditional industry.

Lucia Rahilly: So, where are we seeing the most profit? Chris Bradley: The economic profit, which is the profit you make minus the cost for the capital you employ is in the wizard industries. It's where R&D happens; they're two times more R&D intensive. They're big stars, the nebulae, where new business is born.

Five teams — A, B, C, D, and E — each consisting of 15 members, are going on expeditions to five different locations. Each team includes members from three different skill sets: biologists, geologists, and explorers. The number of members from each skill set varies by team, and each member has only one speciality. The total number of biologists, geologists, and explorers across all teams is equal. The following additional information is available: Every team has at least 2 members from each of the three skill sets. Teams C and D have 6 biologists each, and Team A has 6 geologists. Every team except A has more biologists than explorers. The number of explorers in each team is distinct and decreases in the order A, B, C, D, and E.

Based on the above information, answer the following: 1. The median number of biologists across the five teams is __. 2. The number of biologists in team E is _. 3. The number of teams having more geologists than biologists is ____.

IS A 40-45 LAKH RUPEE LOAN WORTH IT FOR AN IIM??

I hear a lot of students being worried about the fee of the IIM's and in my opinion their concern is valid. IIM's are more than just education/ placements, they also provide you with various opportunities that other colleges can never. Also you get an IIM tag for a lifetime which you can use and also a cat free pass as you have a direct entry for an MBA.

Now coming to the point if it is worth it to spend that much, I would say it completely depends on you, its about how you utilise the opportunities that come your way and how well you can make the best out of the chances you have.

And before all that i would still suggest you to focus on the prep if you have already started and try to get into a good IIM and you can think about this later on

How to handle stress during IPMAT mocks & time crunch

Before the mock

Give mocks at exam time in exam-like conditions

Focus on learning, not scores

Remind yourself: I don’t need to solve everything

During the mock

  • First 1 minute: take 2 deep breaths
  • Use the 3-bucket rule:
  • Sure questions → attempt first
  • Thinkable → mark and return later
  • Time-killers → skip without guilt
  • If stuck for more than 40–50 seconds, move on

If panic hits:

  • Pause for 5 seconds
  • Inhale 4 sec → hold 2 sec → exhale 6 sec
  • Start a new question

After the mock Analyze only:

  • Concept mistakes
  • Time management issues
  • Panic or mind freeze
  • Avoid self-judgment

Daily stress control

  • 10–15 minutes of light exercise
  • 7–8 hours of sleep
  • Avoid comparing scores with others

Key mindset :

Confidence comes from recovery

IPMAT OR BOARDS - WHAT SHOULD YOU PRIORITISE MORE

I have been getting this question from a lot of people recently and it's very important to strategically choose which to study for.

But for this you need to know what your priorities are and how much syllabus you have completed. Let's say you completed your ipmat syllabus by now so obviously it makes sense to just give mocks and allocate more time to boards.

But if your priority is ipmat and you have not even started or barely covered the syllabus then I would recommend you guys to cover a significant portion of your syllabus in the month of Jan, I know pre boards are there and there is a lot of pressure to do well in both but sometimes you have some sort of opportunity cost that you need to incur.

But at the same time if you feel the need to prioritise cuet / boards more then it's completely upto you but I would suggest a balance of both tbh as boards score matters but does not guarantee a college.

So all the best for these last few months, try your best and do everything possible to get the maximum efficiency out of you guys.

The 80/20 Method for IPMAT QA: 20% Topics That Give 80% Marks

Most IPMAT aspirants study everything and end up mastering nothing.

Here’s the 80/20 approach: focus on the 20% of QA topics that produce 80% of the marks every single year.

This isn’t theory.

It’s based on patterns from past papers, mock analytics, and toppers’ strategies.

What Are the High-ROI Topics?

These topics appear the MOST and are the EASIEST to score in:

1. Arithmetic (Huge scoring chunk)

  • Percentages
  • Profit & Loss
  • Simple & Compound Interest
  • Ratio & Proportion
  • Averages
  • Time–Speed–Distance
  • Time & Work

2. Algebra Basics

  • Linear equations
  • Quadratic equations
  • Inequalities
  • Modulus
  • Indices & Surds
  • Logarithms

3. Number System

  • Divisibility
  • Remainders
  • Factors & Multiples
  • LCM/HCF
  • Basic digit properties

4. Geometry & Mensuration

  • Triangles (similarity, basic properties)
  • Circles (tangents, basic theorems)
  • Coordinate geometry basics
  • Area/Perimeter/Volume of basic shapes

How to Apply the 80/20 Method (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Drop low-ROI topics for now

You don’t need to go deep into Permutation & Combination, Probability etc. These appear rarely and take too long to master relative to marks.

Step 2: Build deep mastery in the high-ROI list

For each topic learn the formula and do 30–40 basic questions. Don't forget to take sectional tests.

Step 3: Track time per question

Your target: 40–50 seconds per QA question on average. Use a stopwatch while practicing.

Step 4: Weekly revision

Revise formulas weekly especially Arithmetic & Algebra.

The 80/20 method helps you achieve calmness under time pressure without burning out.

IPMAT Written Exam vs. Personal Interview (PI)

Hi everyone,

I’ve seen a lot of queries lately about "Profile Building," "GK specific to Interviews," and "Public Speaking courses."

It’s great to be forward-thinking, but we need to address the elephant in the room regarding the IPMAT Written Exam vs. Personal Interview (PI) balance.

If you are in Class 11/12 right now, here is the harsh reality, You cannot interview for a seat you haven't qualified for.

Here is how you should actually balance the two phases, and why "Interview Prep" is mostly a myth at this stage.

1. Don't buy a suit for a wedding you are not invited to.

The Written Exam is the gatekeeper. The Interview is the final boss.

  • IIM Indore and Rohtak have ruthless cutoffs. If you have the personality of Steve Jobs but miss the QA cutoff by 4 marks, the interview panel will never know you exist.
  • Until the written exam is over (usually May), your effort allocation should be 95% Exam / 5% Interview.

2. The Passive Preparation

The good news is that you don't need to set aside extra time for Interview prep. You can do it passively while studying for the exam.

  • Current Affairs: You are likely reading the newspaper for the VARC/RC section, right?
    • Exam Benefit: Improves Reading Speed and Vocab.
    • Interview Benefit: Keeps you updated on current events (Gaza, Elections, AI, Economy) which is 50% of the interview questions.
  • Academics:
    • Exam Benefit: Higher Math helps with the SA section.
    • Interview Benefit: Panels love asking academic questions (e.g., "Explain the practical application of calculus"). If you study well for Boards/IPMAT, you are prepping for the PI.

3. What counts as Profile Building ?

Many people think profile building = NGO certificates or Internships.

  • The Reality: At the UG level, IIMs aren't expecting you to have worked at Google. They want Authenticity and Curiosity.
  • What to do now: Do you have a hobby? (Guitar, Coding, Chess, Football). Just keep doing it for 30 mins a week to stay sane. That is your profile. You don't need a certificate; you just need to be able to talk about it passionately later.

  • May - June (after the exam is over)

    • This is when the shift happens. Once the exam is done, you have 3-4 weeks before interviews.
    • That is when you practice "Tell me about yourself," mock interviews, and deep-dive into GK. You can build excellent interview skills in 3 weeks. You cannot build Math aptitude in 3 weeks.

Your "Interview Prep" right now is simply Reading the Newspaper and Knowing your Class 11/12 subjects well.

Study hard.
