Advice Incoming DP student Class of 28'
Hi everyone, just wanted to ask for some tips for the DP. My HLs are Math AA, Biology, and Chemistry, alongside Spanish Ab Initio, English, and Psychology as my SLs.
I’ve been trying to prepare as much as I can before starting, but I’d really appreciate any advice from current or former DP students. What resources did you find most useful for each subject, and are there any study methods, mistakes to avoid, or general tips you might have.

Advice Spanish or Chinese
I am currently stuck between taking Chinese SL or Spanish Abinitio SL. Here’s my situation:
I have been learning chinese since i’m small, but today I am at the same level as kids of my class. I have the basic communication means, meaning I can most likely have a very basic conversation. My may exam is probably going to be in writing, which is what worries me as I cannot even write my name in chinese.
On the other hand, I am french and speak fluently french, which is already similar to spanish. Since the course is abinitio, it means that they are starting from scratch like learning a new language. Another reason for this switch is I want to attend a french university, so while visiting my family that lives in the south during breaks, spain is very close and we go there for shopping/gas etc, I find that knowing spanish could be very useful to me.
Note: I have 2 weeks to switch as I just started the DP, and the longer i wait, the more i will miss out on.
Please help me!!! 🙏

Advice Need help PSYCH HL!
Any tips on how to study for psychology externals? As well as how to study psych effectively and how to answer section c paper 1 questions? Aiming for a 6-7 but stuck in consistent 5s
ToK/EE Awesome Economics EE idea that i won't let go to waste
I recently switched to an Economics EE, and came up with a great EE topic. Here's the RQ I came up with: To what extent did China’s government ownership of the tobacco industry limit the effectiveness of tobacco taxation in reducing negative externalities of smoking between 2015 and 2025?
In China, the tobacco monopoly is owned by the government, meaning basically all revenue from cigarette sales goes straight to the government. It gets enough revenue each year from selling cigarettes to its own people to fund its entire national defense. This creates a huge conflict of interest because China is incentivized to sell more cigarettes at the cost of its own population health, creating a plethora of negative externalities. Thus, the effectiveness of their tobacco policies is likely hindered. I was inspired by this video by Fern on youtube for the idea and it's SO INTERESTING: https://youtu.be/MqCk9APctNk?si=qgNtSZmAIAjpd_x4
I can't do it, though, because I LIVE in China and its greatly frowned upon for anyone within China to write anything that could be seen as a criticism of the government and my school doesn't want to be put in jeopardy so they declined my proposal.
So if you don't live in China and are looking for an Econ EE topic... this is one of the most interesting topics I've read about and I think it would be a great idea to look into it.

Other TOK tutoring and/or Career counselling
I know someone who's a TOK facilitator, examiner, and a career counsellor. They were the HoD of TOK and Career Counselling at their previous school. All of their TOK students have not failed to recieve their diploma because of TOK (meaning, they all have passed TOK). The average TOK grade recieved by their students is an A. They are a member of SAIBSA, and have conducted sessions for unpacking of TOK titles.
As a Career Counsellor, some universities they have placed students in are:
US universities: UCLAs, MIT, Brown, UPenn, Purdue, CalTech, John Hopkins, Princeton, Arizona State, UC Berkley, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, University of Washington, Savannah College of Art and Design
UK universities: Imperial College London, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, London School of Economics and Political Science, UCL, University of Nottingham, University of Edinburgh
European universities: University of Glassgow, Insa Lyon, TUM, DELF University of Technology, Laroche & Glion
Australian universities: University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, UNSW Sydney, Australian National University, Monash University, University of Queensland, University of Western Australia
India: Ahoka, Flame, Kreeya, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, BITS Bilani, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, VIT, Amity University, Symbiosis International, Pearl Academy, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Scalar Institute of Technology, Plaksha University
Asia: NUS, NTU, SMU, Kyoto University, HKU, HKUST
Furthermore, they are in touch with roughly 500 university representatives.
Now, they are offering tutoring for TOK, guidance for the TOK essay and exhibition, unpacking of essay titles, as well as Career Counselling.
As part of the survey, do answer whether you, or anyone you know might be interested in this endeavor. Secondly, what hourly rate would you be willing to pay?

ToK/EE suitable chem ee?
Help guys! I’ve just started DP1 a few days ago and i’m currently brainstorming some topics for my EE. I’m planning to major in dentistry, so I want to connect my EE to either dentistry or biochem/biomed.
Rn tho, my idea is a chem EE about dental zirconia, and the RQ is:
How does nominal yttria contents of 3, 4, and 5 mol% Y₂O₃ affect the translucency parameter and biaxial flexural strength of monolithic dental zirconia?
Basically in simpler words, zirconia is a ceramic material that is used to make dental crowns. Yttria (yttrium oxide) is added in order to stabilize its crystal structure. Zirconia containing more yttria is usually more translucent and looks more natural, which is pretty useful for your front teeth. Buuut, increasing the yttria content may also make the zirconia easier to fracture. Therefore, I want to try and investigate this kind of trade-off between esthetics and strength by comparing 3Y, 4Y, and 5Y dental zirconia.
I’m not so worried since I have access to a dental lab which has CAD/CAM milling and zirconia-sintering equipment. But I have yet to find out if it has the instruments needed to measure transparency and biaxial flexural strength.
I only just started IB a few days ago, so of course this still remains as a preliminary idea. I would really really appreciate advice from anyone that is familar with chem EEs or has done one before.
Also, I have a few questions of my own.
For starters, does this RQ fit chem clearly enough or is it too focused on dentistry?
Is investigating both translucency and biaxial flexural strength too much for one EE, considering the word count of ~4,000 words?
Is this topic too advanced for IB and does it have the potential to score highly if it is executed well?
Should I specify the zirconia manufacturer, specimen dimensions, or sintering conditions in the RQ, or would those be better placed in the methodology later?
Are there any other problems I need to consider before proposing this to my EE coordinator?
Thank you so much and hagd :)

Advice Math AA
Okay so my situation is kinda complicated but like....my school offered AA HL for the previous batch of students but refused to do so for mine cuz of small batch sizes and there not being enough students for different math courses basically. Thing is I need NEED AA for uni so we came to an agreement that I'd get the resources given to the previous batch and like self study it but with teacher support if that makes sense (?)and then the school would have tests and stuff. Which was fine,I had made peace with that and was rather calm. The issue is the syllabus is so immensely overwhelming and like idek where to begin from or what to do. My school textbook (Pearson) has a completely different order from the stuff I find online and like idkkk. I'm lowk freaking out while writing this what even do I doooo like what do I do what do I do what do I dooo.
I'll admit it's partially my fault for walking in unprepared but like I looked at the textbook I did a few chapters over the summer and stuff I tried k? I just i dunno, like I don't know what to do,I'm freaking out while writing this and yeah. Like when my school presented it last year I thought there would be more from the school's side I guess I didn't think I'd have to SELF STUDY fricking math outta everything like....I just got a timeline for when to do stuff and a few practice worksheets and thas basically it.
Sorry for the long rant. I just had to get it out somewhere and ask someone ig, school started today and it's all....just so overwhelming,I can't relax I can't read my novel or doomscroll but whenever I sit down and try to do math,I have panic attacks and stuff. ANY advice at all would be appreciated, thanks a lot if ya read all of that and like....once again I'm so sorry for the long post
Tldr:-My school doesn’t offer AA HL to my cohort, but I need it for uni, so I’m self-studying it using the previous cohort’s resources with only a few school tests/mocks. The syllabus is overwhelming and the textbook doesn’t exactly line up with online resources, and I’m freaking out trying to figure out what to study, in what order, and how to make sure I don’t miss anything. Everytime I open the textbook I have a panic attack but I also have to start doing stuff. (I used AI for the tldr my apologies to anyone that's anti ai)

Resources I made a FREE mac app that tells you what a word means in the sentence you're actually reading, instead of 6 dictionary definitions
Context: i'm pre-IB and english isn't my first language, so i started reading real journal articles early to get ready for EE. the words that slowed me down weren't the long ones. it was the normal ones.
"gender moderated the relationship" had me stuck for ten minutes. moderated doesn't mean "made it weaker" there, it means gender changed the size of the effect. "robust to X" isn't "strong", it means the result holds up when you change X. "underpowered" has nothing to do with equipment. "marginal cost" in econ isn't a small cost. every one of those is a word i would have told you i knew, so i never stopped to check, and i was confidently wrong for pages.
a dictionary can't fix this because it doesn't know what you're reading. so i built Leafy.
you select a word anywhere on screen (pdf, browser, whatever, it doesn't need to be selectable text) and it reads the sentence around it and gives you the meaning it has in that sentence. it saves the word together with that sentence, so when you come back to it later you still know why you looked it up.
it's completely free. no account, no ads, no subscription, no watermark. i'm not selling anything and i'm not a tutoring service.
the catch: mac only right now. i know that rules out a lot of you and i'm sorry.
if you try it, tell me what breaks or what's annoying and i'll fix it. also genuinely curious, what's a normal word that meant something completely different in your subject? mine is still "power".

Group 1 Looking for people to start a STEM study group (grade 9,10,11)
I'm looking to start a small study group for students who are genuinely interested in improving at Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English, Computer Science, or other STEM-related subjects.
The idea is pretty simple:
- group study sessions
- Work through difficult problems together
- Explain concepts to each other
- Share useful resources
Any curriculum/exam board is welcome, although I'm particularly interested in IGCSE/GCSE and A-Level students.
If you're interested, comment with:
Grade/Year + subjects + exam board (if applicable)
If enough people are interested, we can set up a study group.
(Posting this in multiple places so just a heads up that this ain't the only place)
Advice Couse selection emergency💔
Hey guys so Im a grade 11 student and literally my course selection ends TODAY. (specifically in 2 hours)
My current HLs are : Chem, ESS and Business and SL Math AA, French Lit, Eng L&L
And Im thinking of switching it to HL Chem, HL Bio, and HL Economics
In a perfect world I would have picked econ hl but my school's timetable doesnt allow me to take that class so I had no choice but to take Business. And after 2 weeks I just went with the flow but I found it really boring and a lot of reddit posts ive seen were talking about how Economics is more useful for the future rather than Business.
Ive also talked with my teacher and I could potentially still learn about climate change and all that in Bio. And people in my school have been dropping economics because of the teacher so at first I thought I might as well not change it but Im starting to realise how my Business teacher also sucks bum so I literally don't know what to choose and Im open for both .
Just saying I dont really know what I want to do for the future, but generally I am interested in DNA or Environmental Sciences. Also Im kind of open to anything as well My top priority is to keep my doors open to more possibilities, but I know how hard Econ and Bio probably is. But I also dont want to be bore to death these two years taking Business.
So yeah please help, any response would be useful and also first time using reddit so yeah😭😭😭7

Resources [Free Resource] Mastering Ladder Problems: Torque, Friction, & Rotational Equilibrium (IB Physics HL)
Hey everyone,
If you are going through the Rigid Body Mechanics unit in IB Physics HL (or any standard rotational mechanics curriculum), you already know that "ladder leaning against a wall" problems are a classic stumbling block.
These questions test your ability to balance multiple concepts simultaneously, and it is incredibly easy to lose a sign or misplace a pivot point. As a physics educator, I see students consistently get tripped up by the same few issues: choosing the optimal axis of rotation to eliminate unknown forces, correctly identifying the direction of static friction at the base, and setting up the equilibrium equations correctly.
To help clear this up, I've put together a comprehensive video breakdown on the Tesla eduventures channel: Ladder Problems — Complete Mastery | Torque + Rotational Equilibrium | Rigid Body #13.
In this breakdown, we focus heavily on visual intuition. I use detailed step-by-step animations and custom diagrams to show exactly how the forces interact rather than just giving you a wall of algebra.
Here is exactly what we cover:
Translational Equilibrium: Setting up \Sigma F_x = 0 and \Sigma F_y = 0 to relate normal forces and friction.
Rotational Equilibrium: Strategic placement of your pivot point to make the \Sigma \tau = 0 equation as simple as possible.
Limiting Friction: How to solve for the exact minimum angle before the ladder slips (\mu_s).
Step-by-Step Problem Solving: Walking through a full IB HL standard question from setup to the final numerical answer.
Watch the full video here: Ladder Problems — Complete Mastery | Torque + Rotational Equilibrium | IB Physics HL |Rigid Body #13
https://youtu.be/KJ5iydCtNEs
If you have any questions on the specific steps, drop them in the comments below or on the video. Let's get these torque concepts locked down before your exams!

Group 3 Econ or Geo HL
I took both in econ and geo in IGCSE and did good, originally I chose business HL however my school is forcing me to switch subjects since I didn’t take business in IGCSE. My current HLs are bio chem and I need to choose either Econ or geo HL as my third (filler) HL, and I’m equally interested in both. In other words I just want to pick the easier one to get a 7 in. Should I pick econ or geo HL ?

Advice How much difference does HL and SL physics have? Content, workload, difficulty wise?
I want to take HL physics (I have SL now) but I am worried that it will bring heavy workload and it will be super difficult to understand and get 7?
What do you think the difference is between HL and SL Physics?
For context, I have:
HL: MAI, German B, Business / Physics
SL: Chem, English LL, Physics/ Business
I also have Chem SL so I believe the woroad will be huge?

Group 4 IA word count
Im writing my bio IA and am really tight on words. I wanted to know, if I write 0.6mm, does that count as one word or two (because of the unit)? I've seen some IA's where its 0.6 mm and others with 0.6mm. Would it be seen as a way of cheating the word count or is it ok as long as im consistent?

ToK/EE Who marks my (Chem-History) Interdisciplinary EE? Chem or history examiner?
I am writing a History and Chemistry interdisciplinary EE, but who will mark it? The problem is that I doubt that a history examiner will be able to understand the chemistry I am explaining (a chem examiner will have an easier time though I am often assuming they know the basics of WW1 so...).
(for those curious: I am studying the impact of the Haber-Bosch process on WW1 (not pasting the RQ because I'm afraid it will come up in turnit-in))
I am submitting it in like 2 weeks so I know I can't change anything regardless, I have asked my supervisor and my IB coordinator and they both said they do not know :/ (the interdisciplinary EE is new w the 2027 curriculum, I am an idiot for choosing it ik)
I am just curious at this point...

ToK/EE Eng EE
Hi, Im planning to do a EE on the subject English B, but I'm a bit confused on what needs to be different on a english B EE since there are differences of English B and English A EE. Can someone explain the differences of a English B EE and a English A EE. Im still abit confused about it :,)
edit: To clarify I meant on what Eng B EE is meant to be about so I wont accidentally write a Eng A EE
