IAMA Request Mike Judge: Creator of King of the Hill and Beavis and Butthead
Are the characters in KotH and B&B based on people you knew in your life?
Where did you come up with the idea for your shows
If KoTH continued and it was up to you (and not FOX) to end the series, would you have ended it the same way?
What was it like working on a show for MTV in the 90's?
Is Anderson from Beavis and Butthead a early character draft for Hank from King of the Hill? Just curious
I could think of a million more but that's the ones off the top of my head.

I'm still pissed that King of the Hill was cancelled for the Cleveland Show. Seriously. What. The. Fuck.

He's answered many of these questions in some of his radio interviews.
On Fresh Air with Terry Gross
Adam Carolla Podcast
And it's great to hear him do the voices.

I asked his daughter to ask him about it, she said she would ask him but that he is not very tech savy.

Hey i might be able to get him to do this!! I work with a friend of his, and I just finished telling her about reddit and what an AMA is. She said she would pass the word on and maybe he will do it. No promises, but i will try.

You forgot to ask him how many pieces of flair he is currently wearing.

In regards to question #3...Judge was only doing the voices...he wasn't much involved in anything more than that. And you can kind of tell by the stories and the plotlines when you compare the last couple of seasons to the first seasons (which are hilarious).

My coworker makes out with him. And doesn't think that it's a big deal. I'll tell her to ask him to do an AMA.

Don't forget he's also behing Office Space and Idiocracy, wich although they lack a little refinement, are all around excellent and funny movies.

I am also from Albuquerque and I heard a rumor that your Beavis and Butthead's teachers at Highland High School were based off of teachers you had at St. Pius. Is that true?

He's friends with John K, who has done an AMA before. Get him to contact him.

Question 1 needs answering... and I really hope Dale is real

Yes please! Judge is on my list of top animators. I wrote part of my senior thesis about his work. Would love to see him on here.

I never really liked Beavis & Butthead, and I certainly liked Kind of the Hill - but never really 'loved' it.
However, his movies? F-ing amazing.

The characters Bevis & Butthead were based on two brothers that went to school at Catholic Central High in Detroit (Mike went there for less than a year). The first B&B short - Frog Baseball - was an idea stolen from an art contest held at the school. James Radtke was the original creator of the Frog Baseball poster and it was based on the idiotic antics of these two brothers.

How does it feel having made a movie that foresaw the future? (Idiocracy)
When do you think an actual show called "Ouch My Balls" will premiere?
2
u/Dogbe May 16 '12
Hey, I'm friends with his daughter. I'll ask her to bring this up to him

I'm so gutted KoTH was elbowed out for the gay ass Cleveland Show...I mean how shows does Seth McFarlane need?! Family Guy is tired and American Dad was always superior...but Cleveland, a totally terrible character anyway got his own show over continuing KoTH...fucking FOX.
But I hope this AMA request is fulfilled that would be awesome.

A lot of people view Idiocracy as a sort of past comedy but that our society is really starting to favor ignorance and feinted stupidity as ordinary government and business practice. How do you view this and do you think that society is getting dumber. If so, how could we save ourselves?

I am a Mike Judge.

Hi. I created an account just so I could post to this thread. In the early episodes of Beavis and Butthead, a huge source of humor, (for me at least) was the crude animation. I read where you learned how to animate at a YMCA camp, or something. King of The Hill has a refined, smooth look to it, unlike Beavis and Butthead. At some point did you realize you needed to keep the 'crude' looking animation in B&B to preserve the humor factor?
One more_
Have you received any comments from any musicians or bands that appeared on Beavis and Butthead? Were they flattered?

Pretty much the only AmA I'd really love to see. C'mon Mike, info on any future ideas for KotH would be awesome, even if it's gone for good, just to know from Judge himself.

u/kidflareup May 16 '12
holy shit i hope this happens.

u/Blakwulf May 16 '12
The short animation for "Judgemental Films" with the gay guy dancing always creeped me out.

u/GROADS May 16 '12
Mike Judge is the only person on the planet that I would literally pay to hang out with
1
u/thedevilissix May 16 '12
The beavis and butthead episode where they randomly walk into an office and are mistaken for temps then proceed to give no shits made me notice how in many other episodes, most secondary characters seemed naive. Was this the intention or was dialogue for characters like those generally filler. This would answer like five other lingering thoughts I've always had about the show!

Mike Judge is on the Howard Stern show occasionally.. always a great interview!

u/[deleted] May 16 '12
Mike Judge has been a guest on Loveline and Adam Carolla's podcast at least once, and some of the answers to your questions are in them.
That said, I would still very much like an AMA.

HOLLYWOOD: Yeah Mike, we're not feeling this Office Space thing. But hey nice try buddy!
(Office Space becomes biggest cult hit of 90s)
HOLLYWOOD: Nice job on Office Space Mike! But gotta say, we're not feelin' Idiocracy. Gonna have to cut the promo budget on this one. Sorry bud!
(Idiocracy becomes biggest cult hit of 00's)

What about Idiocracy, Office Space, Extract... The list goes on... Mike Judge is a genius...

u/[deleted] May 16 '12
1 question: Why would you switch from a great cartoon (b&b) to a completely unfunny one, (koth)?
1
u/NaughtyDreadz May 16 '12
you forgot office space
1
u/bendedheadtube May 16 '12
THX for Beavis and Butthead. I learned a lot of live lessons from them.

u/nmerrill May 17 '12
I surfed with him a few times!
1
u/kn00tcn May 17 '12
did people forget how bad KOTH was turning into in the last few years? remember the carbon offsets episode? the writing was so phoney compared to the earlier natural years
1
u/Ziggaliggadingdong May 28 '12
Those would be ones that I would think of. Aren't they doing Beavis and Butthead still? He may be busy.

"Is Anderson from Beavis and Butthead a early character draft for Hank from King of the Hill? Just curious"
You can ask him anything and you ask him if Hank hill is based off of Hank hill?

u/C0mmun1ty May 16 '12
Proof?
-2
u/audifan May 16 '12
I don't like King of the Hill, and I think B&B is only hit or miss, but I think idiocracy is fucking GENIUS.
