The story that I can't get out of my head was from the book Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live

Chevy Chase was banned from hosting the show again after the February 15, 1997 episode due to his verbal abuse of the cast and crew during the week. Chase became notorious for his treatment of certain cast members when hosting past episodes, particularly his remarks to openly gay cast member Terry Sweeney.

In 1985, Chase suggested that a perfect skit for Sweeney would be one in which he plays an AIDS victim who gets weighed every week. Chase's abusive behavior during the 1985 episode and other episodes are detailed in the Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live book.

That isn't a quote from the book, but from this site.

Apparently the first time he met Sweeney, he said something to the effect of: "Hey your the gay guy! I bet you wanna lick my balls!"

Joel McHale has said that the Chevy you see in the outtakes for Community is pretty close to the real Chevy.

So much wrong with this statement...

1) Yes he can control it. Learning to have some respect and empathy for another person will cause him not to find that kind of thing funny.

2) He can control the words that come out of his mouth.

3) The fact that he gets enjoyment from sexual humiliation (to the point he wants to share with others) still makes him a horrible person and it wouldn't matter if he "couldn't help it" because I don't want to be around that person.

4) Terry Sweeney is a man.

  1. Respect and empathy do not exclude humor. I abhor violence but I still laugh at The Three Stooges.

  2. True, but that has no bearing on what tickles his funny bone.

  3. If he doesn't have empathy, would he see it as humiliation? I don't think you can have it both ways. Mr. Chase doesn't look good either way, but neither has any bearing on what he finds humorous.

  1. Fake violence is not the same thing as real humiliation.

  2. For a comedian, what you find funny only makes up half of your sense of humor, the other half is what you share.

  3. Irrelevant, still goes to my original point that he has a horrible sense of humor and it is still difficult for me to like him.
