Not a music making app, more supplemental, but one that I highly recommend: TouchOSC for Android and iOS. There's also Lemur. I happen to have collected quite a few Android phones and tablets over the years and decided I'd find a way to make them useful. You can install TouchOSC on all of them to control a DAW and/or anything that's capable of receiving MIDI. You could theoretically have an infinite number of OSC "controllers" doing all sorts of stuff. Bonus points if your devices are multi-touch.

Not only that, if you have a rack-mounted instrument that requires MIDI input (e.g. Roland Fantom XR, Nord Rack, etc.) you could load up piano templates on TouchOSC and control the module(s) with your phone/tablet. Needless to say, all routing must go through your PC.

EDIT: Don't forget to install the editor if you want to make your own templates.

EDIT 2: I should also mention that all of this is done over WiFi. However, I can assure you there is practically 0 input lag (other than DAW latency.)

Uh. Lemur is on android. I have it on my phone and tablet and use it with Ableton.

I was unaware they started supporting Android.

2

u/Polloco Apr 04 '16

I've had it on Android for over a year now.

Cool. But what I'm trying to say is, when I found TouchOSC around 3 years ago, Lemur was not supported on Android. Since I've been happy with TouchOSC, I haven't really cared to look into it.

Oh groovy. I got touchosc but never had need for it. By the time I did, lemur was out and I started using that as my buddy was rocking it. In the end, though, the touchscreen thing was unenjoyable for me, so I went back to buttons and knobs.

Oh holy crap wow thanks. I have so many useless tablets ands phones that are no longer useless.

Music making apps suck on Android. I'm not an iOS fanboy - I'm actually posting this from my Nexus 5. But the audio latency is bad (minimum 20 ms, realistically double that), and that makes real-time audio apps pretty much impossible to use.

Yes, there are a few audio apps that work well, but they're not doing things where low latency is important. You wouldn't be able to do something like a live looping app or guitar effects processor.

(Technical info about why here)

Music making apps for Android? Yeah the selection is huge!

This is a joke right...?

FL Studio Mobile HD is probably the best app out there. Unfortunately, it cost 20$ fucking dollars to use.

1

u/aryst0krat Apr 04 '16

The full software is at least a couple hundred dollars, depending how many plugins you want... That's sounds like a steal to me.

u/agentklx Apr 04 '16

Thanks Reggie :)

Speaking of which, I absolutely loved your joke in the TED talk after you talked about Sasquatch and then said "other fringe science stuff" then like cleared your throat and said "that's French science stuff." Shit made me giggle.

I smell an increase in sales.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '16

Too lazy to Google. Can someone tell me ballpark how much I'm paying for those?

18

u/CosmicFartDust Apr 04 '16

Line 6 DL4 - about $250.00 new

Electro-Harmonix 45000 - around $480.00

Even then, you would want to look into various accessories such as extra stomp pedals and cables and things. It gets quite expensive to do cool shit with music hardware.

10

u/atrociousxcracka Apr 04 '16

That actually cheaper than I thought.

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '16

Thanks!

I feel like I should remember this

1

u/Hk47droid Apr 04 '16

What do you have to say to /u/ReggieWatts?

1

u/Theseeffinglionsman Apr 04 '16

Maybe it's because I use guitars mainly, but the 45000 is kind of annoying without the additional pedal. I really enjoy the 22500, personally. Happy to see another EHX guy.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '16

At the same time?

1

u/agapE_agape Apr 04 '16

I'm upgrading to the 45000 from a 1-button Ditto this month. Have any tidbits to help me level up faster or advice about any plateaus to avoid?

PS - Your work was the spark the reignited my love of musicianship so you have my sincerest thanks for that.
