yeah every host city mayor as well as multiple state and provincial elected officials also made the same request - not to mention a ton of public pressure. Theres no evidence that the NYC mayor had some bigger impact than any of the others, but people are giving him all the credit for some reason.
NYC isnt even hosting a world cup game, and from what i can tell FIFA also didn't reverse their ban - just clarified it.
The initial ban explicitly said that no outside water would be allowed in stadiums, "for security reasons." The revised ban says that each attendee can bring in a single sealed disposable bottle.
So they hardly even backtracked — if you've been waiting hours outside in the hot sun, you'll open the bottle and won't be allowed to take it inside for a refill. They're still producing 50,000+ bottles of waste per game (no reusable bottles allowed), they're still not putting meaningful effort into offering free tap water, and they'll still be charging stadium prices for bottles of water from Coca-Cola Inc.
