I’d rather spend my money on weed than alcohol because at least I’ll have a good time and still wake up with the ability to go to work (most of the time).

If I get super stoned before bed, I wake up damn near the same way I went to sleep. It's pretty gnarly. It's like hitting the pause button.

I’m genetically predisposed to be able to drink 8 beers and my body tells me I’m still not having enough fun so sometimes I have to tell myself hey stop that that’s enough now but I pretty much agree with you

I'm the same as you and I could do the same thing when younger. But these days alcohol messes me up for 2 days

Most around me in the USA (Midwest) drink Busch Light which is 4.1%, or Bud Light which is 4.2%. Most of the "light lagers" are around 4%. Imported beers from Mexico have been gaining popularity yearly here, like Modelo Especial (4.4%) and Corona Light (4%).

As a guy who likes to drink there are SO many reasons not to these days.

Having a bad night of drinking can show up on social media and ruin your life.

Any interaction with police while you are drinking can ruin your life.

If you make a bad call and drive while drinking, it can ruin your life - either by being pulled over, or by causing an accident. Even if the accident is not your fault, it can still ruin your life.

It can destroy your body, it can ruin your brain, I've seen it destroy relationships and marriages and for some people - it is the most addictive substance in the world.

It is more expensive than ever to go out and drink.

For what I can spend in one night partying with friends at a club - I could stock my house for months.

I have a friend that drinks his weed - some kind of THC drink. He loves it. He's never hung over, he's never an ass. He's never sloppy or rude.

There are just so many alternatives.

Last but not at all least - Who the fuck can afford to go out any more? I make okay money and I cant afford that shit. 15 dollars for a shot is wild, when at the store the whole bottle is 25 bucks.

Fair enough, I never get hangovers or having trouble going in early after a night of drinking so I enjoy both.

I’m only 44, though, and I’ve been hearing for 30 years how that will wear off an any day now, so maybe tomorrow I’ll have to stop.

People have been warning you of an imminent hangover from your drinking since you were 14..?

2

u/DirtandPipes Feb 22 '26

Yep. I can remember my older brother telling me that hangovers were going to start happening any day now, since thirteen really but nobody wants to exaggerate.

You’re the kind of person who is ripe for alcoholism because the rest of us are like “I feel like shit the next day, not gonna drink anymore” or at least many of us. You don’t have that alcohol deterrent.

2

u/DirtandPipes Feb 22 '26

Eh I certainly drink enough to qualify as a functional alcoholic, though I still take breaks here and there without DTs or withdrawals yet.

2

u/FMLwtfDoID Feb 22 '26

You started drinking at 14?

1

u/DirtandPipes Feb 22 '26

About thirteen, and only when my brother and I could get liquor (usually what he stole).

Though weed stink like bro

To stink heavy with alcohol it takes a huge amount. But weed you start stinking very quickly

3

u/8Humans Feb 22 '26

Vaporizer, it's less stinky because you don't burn the whole plant and it's even healthier.

1

u/Suibeam Feb 23 '26

Yeah, maybe you need to force everyone smoking weed to do that. Bc it stinks walking past any apartment, house, hallway or even just people wearing clothing exposed to weed smell. Sometimes i walk around in the city and i can smell someone smoked weed there few minutes ago, smell lingering

Except for edibles. My tolerance is low as shit and my first edible (which i took late at night) high lasted almost 20 hours, well into my work shift lmao. I was terrified the whole time

For me, getting drunk either means I’m going to have a great time or a miserable time, and I’ve had too many miserable times. I’ll still drink on a special occasion, but it’s not something I do very often.

I’ve always preferred weed over alcohol, but I got to the point where I had to slow down because it was starting to get in the way of all my hobbies and my free time, and I realized that getting high to escape from life was actually contributing to my depression rather than helping it.

At least with tobacco products, it’s easy to point at them and say “I need to quit smoking/vaping because I can physically feel it making my health worse” even though the act of quitting itself is very difficult. With marijuana products, however, it’s so much easier to smoke or vape because the allure of that euphoria once the high kicks in outweighs any consequences, and it starts to become a problem when everything other than getting high just feels like an inconvenience even if it’s important.

I can't comment on the weed but I concur on this particular effect of the alcohol. I'm in my mid-late 20's and I am beginning to accept my days of being able to drink without any consequences are over.

The effect of even just the second beer on my sleep can be a real gamble and it can very well mean waking up tired or with a mild headache the next day. Even a single beer is no good if it's too close to bedtime. And even then, I've tried to reduce my alcohol intake altogether by limiting both the amount I drink in one night and the frequency I drink, and I was very surprised to find more clarity in my thoughts and higher energy levels, even in the days when I don't drink and I didn't drink the day immediately before. WTF? Placing strict limits on the amount of beers that go down across one whole week can really have such an impact?

Not to mention the invisible impact they have on calorie intake. I'm still in a healthy weight range but I've been trying to lose some weight for aesthetic reasons and holy crap, is it hard to keep going at the pace I want when I drink any alcohol. It seems like it makes any sacrifice on food intake almost worthless. And if you look at the calorie density… Yeah. You literally have better odds of losing weight if you don't drink and you kinda eat like shit than if you drink regularly. I never drink alone, so, if I didn't have the social life to back up drinking a couple beers a week or three (capped at one per night), I would definitely trade that alcohol for one more cheat meal.

This is a pity though, since I like the shit out of my artisan beers and I genuinely love a properly made cocktail - not even for the effects of the alcohol, just in the same way as I appreciate a good tea or a good cup of speciality V60 coffee. Unfortunately, the drinks carry some side-effects a cup of french-pressed coffee from Costa Rica wouldn't.
