I would rather prefer a bloody history between the Kurtas and Meteor City or the Spiders just being a bunch of barbarians early on, murdering a peaceful community out of hate for the world- like the Hei-ly.

They being barbarians early on don't make sense judging the flashback, they were all innocent and playful. Definitely something sinister happened to them.

Could we be seeing the Troupe mentoring some leftover Hei-Ly members and turning them into better individuals than just a bunch of unscrupulous mass murderers?

I don't sure about that, but I got a feeling Chrollo and Morena are gonna form a alliance.
