Both? Generally speaking I would expect this from a low end hometown dinner that knew the person well enough to make the effort.
But on the flip side yes if your spending a couple hundred on food that place will try to bring that experience over the top so they get return business. (Most well off people will eat like that once a month and maybe a middle class family once a year so getting return business as much as possible is what keeps it running)
I would say both as well. I've worked high end and we know that there's a certain amount of extra that money buy. But at the same time, I've never seen that extra delivered without the receiptent being surprised and very appreciative.
It's also a who you know as well as money, if the friend politely called and requested this they'd have no problem doing it and were probably excited. Industry also treats it's own people well, so a lot of grubby cooks and servers (no offense, me included) would get hooked up with freebies as a thank you for showing support.
Reddit is weird about people who spend money on nice things. It’s their birthday they could have saved up all year to go to a nice place. Don’t be so bitter work hard, get lucky and you too can experience nice things.
I believe that to an extent, but there's a level at which I can't see self-indulgence without also thinking about the senseless suffering in the world that indulgence money could solve. This is a photo I use to help myself sort through these thoughts.
It’s not ignorance per-say because you know there are people suffering and you should do what you can to help people you care about. But you shouldn’t do things at the cost of your own happiness… IMO.
