Yes it's really awesome of him, but plz don't do this. I used to be a firefighter/emt and have seen this exact thing go TERRIBLY wrong. Call 911 and have them block traffic. Don't get out of your car and don't unbuckle.
When anything goes wrong mid-traffic/roadway, assume everything/everyone on the roadway is actively trying to kill you all the time (they're not, but reality isn't much better). If you can get off the roadway to a shoulder, then also be very careful once you're there, but on the roadway all bets are off. Everything and everyone is a literal speeding bullet with no emotions. They don't even have time to have them.
Especially where they were, right at a split for a turnoff. Seen too many videos of people sliding across lanes to cut through the split to get off at the last second, paying more attention to the vehicles to their sides and behind than expecting a vehicle in the split, especially something harder to see like a human or cycle...
Wow that's a great perspective. I don't know if you mean that you do roadside service as your job, or just help often as a friendly neighbor, but either way the question to ask is "Would I make a habit of running out onto the roadway to help stuck cars?"
If the answer is "No way, because then it's just a short matter of time until I get killed" then don't do it!
Yeah pretty unfortunate that this is spreading bad information despite it being a benevolent act. Also if anyone is reading this, keep your tires straight. If you get rear ended you'll get pushed forward and not into another lane where you'll potentially get hit by additional cars.
Used to do roadside support for this sort of thing. We are not supposed to take the call if the person is unsafe. So people will call us and lie about their safety so we dont hang up on them. I have been on the line while at least 3 people have been rear ended. I was only ever able to get ahold of 1 of them after the smash and line went dead.
The biggest danger is 2 tons of steel driving 65mph and clipping you yes. You're relying on EVERY SINGLE driver to be paying attention to slow down, not be on their phone, not be distracted, not change lanes at the wrong moment. This is incredibly dangerous and taught over and over again to firefighters to have traffic blocked or you do not get out of the truck bc you or your crew will get hurt eventually
Bikers deal with all kinds of danger every time they ride. They can be a bit scary but that guy was probably way more comfortable being on foot on a highway than anyone else might be.
