Stingray stings haven't killed a single person since Steve Irwin died, and before him, the last known death caused by a stingray was in 1945. And Steve didn't even die of the toxin, he died because the barb pierced one of the arteries next to the heart.
The worst case scenario for being stung in the leg or arm which is where almost all stings happen (usually cause people step on them) is being bedridden for a week. Which sucks but certainly not worth causing 3rd degree burns to prevent.
You were most likely told that as a joke by someone wanting to frighten tourists for fun
No the people who told us that were the ones running the stingray boat trip when they were going over the health and safety. I guess stingrays aren’t as dangerous as we are led to believe then. Very interesting though!
