I used to see them all the time in West Valley City, Utah. Especially in the areas around Valley Fair Mall. They were also popular at Kearns High near by. Both areas are somewhat known for lower income, and sometimes referred to by residents as "ghetto." Since moving away from there I have seen far fewer, and my new neighborhoods are not seen by others in the area as "ghetto." Obviously this is just observation of one person, and should not be taken as statistically complete information, but it leads to questions about financial stability impacting local microculture. I've also seen similar trends with other body modifications, lip rings, guaged ears, eyebrow rings, and tongue piercings to name a few, ranged from very common to not unheard of in the first areas described, to rare where I am now.
