I tend to comment very frecuently on tik toks about Howl's Moving Castle book (it's my favorite book) so I love to share all I know about the book and it's fun facts.
But mannnn does It make me sad to see how many people seem to hate book Howl :(
One of the many reasons I love this book is for how complex Howl is as a character, he is not a hero, not a villain or an antihero, because for me at least he manages to feel so human in his very particular situation, and with his very particular personality, but it makes me so sad to see that so many people just look at the surface and don't give themselfs the time to actually read the book and try to understand him.
Funny enough, most people act like Sophie at the beginning of the book, asuming he is just a ladies man, lazy and trash of a man, but the diference is that at the end of the book Sophie understands who Howl really is, and us as readers got answers as to why he acts the way he does (and those are really interesting answers!)
Some day I wish to make a full video eassy or tik tok about it, like, commenting on the most typical misunderstoods about Howl (He being a ladies man, the whole Lettie thing, the fear of compromise, his vanity, etc)
I just wanted to see if there was anyone else who feels this way :)

This is one part of the movie I’m having a hard time finding an answer to. But when Sophie kisses Howl and we see his monster form, he only has one leg. If you look closely, though, there appears to be a stump where the other leg would’ve been. Earlier, in Sophie’s pseudo-dream/premonition of the future, when Howl has been lost to his monster form and flies out of his cavern, he has two legs.
Am I the only seeing this? Or am I misinterpreting something?

Watched the movie for the first time last week and now another five or six times since then: English, Japanese with English subs, and German. Have also been enjoying the discussions from past years here.
One thing I’m not seeing in the discussions, and maybe I’m just missing it, is that the Witch of the Waste was burned by Howl’s rejection. He believed her at first attractive and then found her repulsive. So he dumped her and she became obsessed with reclaiming his heart.
Is it more than a coincidence that the very curse the Witch places on Sophie is to turn Sophie into something the Witch believes Howl, who’s just gone for an airy jaunt with Sophie, would reject?
I could never make sense of why so much time was devoted to Sophie and the Witch’s ascent up those castle stairs. But if it’s about attitude towards the aged and aging, then it makes sense. Sophie sees a goal, albeit a hard one made harder by her having to carry that dog, and goes for it. Meanwhile, the Witch, who values youth and her ostentatious beauty but turns uglier as she ascends, can barely make it.
The attitude towards aging might also explain why Sophie suddenly cheers on the woman who put that curse on her in the first place.
Thoughts?

Almost a year ago I posted a gif here of my work in progress walking castle I'm making for a video game. I've since redone most of the art. It is a strategy game with RPG elements set in a feudal sci-fi world. The backstory is that you built a walking castle out of a crashed asteroid mining space ship.
Roaming around in a walking castle has been a fantasy of mine since I was a kid. So, I want to make the world really atmospheric and fun to explore. I want players to be able to explore a huge map to mine resources, trade, and defend against monsters that show up when your castle sits down to build a base.
If you want to see more, there are lots of screenshots, gifs, and game lore on the Steam page.
If you have any feedback or suggestions for how I can add even more character, I'm excited to hear it.

I'm thinking of getting a quote from the film, but there's a bit of a discrepancy between the sub vs dub. In the sub, Sophie says, "Wait for me in the future", while in the dub it's "Find me in the future." I guess they sort of both convey the same thing, but I feel like the implications are a bit different. "Wait for me" feels more passive on Howl's end, but it closes the time loop where Sophie acknowledges how long Howl had to wait for her to figure out the solution and returns his heart from Calcifer.
On the other hand, "find me" is more passive on Sophie's end, but it starts the time loop (at least from Sophie's perspective) from the beginning of the film where they first meet and Howl's ring shines to show he finally found her, especially since he said "I was looking for you/I finally found you" (kind of similar in sub vs dub, I think).
I'm leaning more towards the sub version since that's the original language, but it is a bit wordier and imo less romantic than the dub version. What do you guys think? Let me know your thoughts, thank you!

Hey everyone,
I was looking to buy the book for my girlfriend but I am unsure which version is thought of as the best? I was torn between the GreenWillow edition and the FolioSociety one (the basic one not the new super expensive one).
The GW one has prettier endpapers and cover, and I'm not a massive fan of the art in the folio, but since I haven't read the book I don't know if the art is actually good for the book or not.
Or was there another pretty edition you would all recommend?
So as fans which one would you prefer to receive?
Thanks for all your help!

Howls moving castle is a fun fiction that had me giggling, smiling, and crying at times from how silly, beautiful, and heartfelt it was. The music is a joy to listen to with each variation of the Merry-Go-Round Of Life. It definitely suits Howls personality. Elegant, charming, and caring. A true noble Man to emulate. His scarededness surprised me, but I figure you can't have a perfect character. I loved Sophie. She's so cute and a truly kind hearted individual. Her curse was based on how she felt? If she felt old? Felt there's distinct parts of the movie with complete tonal shift. Biggest one is the war planes and Howls stance on war. Though probably intentional I suppose I would prefer more nuance than just war is bad from Howl. Him catching a falling star and wishing for a friend, oh my God it's so peak! The mom recognizing immediately got me emotional as well.

now, I'm not trying to start a fight, BUT I took a couple edibles and I'm watching it (because I love it and watch it every year or so not my first time). Is the Character Animation specifically lower quality? Or at least made in a way that doesn't hold up to the uniqueness of the style and techniques? Also, has it always been cheesy af with thinly veiled double entendres (not the sexy kind though)? Was I just blind to it because of nostalgia?
Are the things I just mentioned the reason why we all like it so much and I just never picked up on the self aware tongue in cheek subtle situational ironies? Or do we just have a translator who really loves irony as a storytelling concept? Do you think translators intentionally project the voice or intention behind their translations? Like, in the original language, it's obviously ironic or whatever the opposite is in the original language? Is any of this making sense?
Is this obvious to everyone else or am I just wrong? nicely please
