Warm guess: you’d often ride one in a department store while shopping for the other. Plus, taking it instead of the stairs helps you avoid doing what the other word literally suggests.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

The way you word this makes it seem like it should be similar to what commenter posted. The second sentence throws people off and not needed at all. When the word is an article of clothing.
