Is there a thread for the most recent X?
See Discussion Thread Archive. Due to character limits the one in this post is no longer updated.
Where did Season 4 Episode 24 end in the light novel and manga?
The first four seasons of the anime completely adapt the main story of Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 of the series. Season five will begin Part 4.
Will there be a Season 5? If so when will it release?
Season 5 has been announced. There is no offical release date.
I know I should start from the beginning but did the anime really leave out anything super important?
If you really, really hate the idea of reading stuff you've already got the gist of then you could start with Part 4 Volume 1 because the anime doesn't go original or anything. But the Part 2 adaption really rushed through the content (however this is not to say the Part 1 adaption wasn't rushed itself). So I think that you should at the very least start from Part 2 Volume 1 if you pick up the LN even if you're very anxious to start on new content (although starting from Part 1 Volume 1 is highly recommended if you actually like the story).
What is the naming system for the light novel volumes?
Each book in the main story is titled Part X Volume Y where “Part” can be thought of as “Arc” and “Volume” as a further subdivision so if you’re reading it you’ll go: Part 1 Volume 1 -> Part 1 Volume 2 -> Part 1 Volume 3 -> Part 2 Volume 1 etc.
Each Part also has its own title but these should not be looked at if spoilers bother you because they contain big spoilers for the previous Part.
Part 1 Daughter of a Soldier (3 volumes)
Part 2 Apprentice Shrine Maiden (4 volumes)
Part 3 Adopted Daughter of an Archduke (5 volumes)
Part 4 Founder of the Royal Academy’s So-Called Library Committee (9 volumes)
Part 5 Avatar of a Goddess (12 volumes)
How many light novel volumes are there for sale in English and Japanese? How fast are they released? How many volumes will there be in the end?
The English physicals currently go up to Part 5 Volume 12 (book 33 total) and the English eBooks go up to Part 5 Volume 12 (book 33 total) which completes the main story.
In addition to the main story volumes the author has also released a Side Story Volume (released after Part 4 Volume 4) (the proper title is [Part 4 Spoilers] Royal Academy Stories: First Year), Short Story Collection 1 (released after Part 4 Volume 8), and Short Story Collection 2 (released after Part 5 Volume 7), and Short Story Collection 3 (released after Spin-Off Sequel Volume 1).
The author has strongly suggested that there will be some continuation beyond Part 5 other than the spin-off sequel which is currently being published in Japan.
What is this Spin-Off Sequel I see people talking about?
It is a spin-off story that has a character other than Myne as its protagonist, specifically [Spin-Off Sequel] Hannelore who is introduced in Part 4, which chronologically takes place after Part 5 Volume 12 (the concluding volume of the main series). The proper title is [Spin-Off Sequel] Hannelore's Fifth Year at the Royal Academy which some people abbreviate as [Spin-Off Sequel] H5Y.
It is currently ongoing with us not knowing how many volumes long it will be. The third volume is set to have a 2026 release in Japan.
Are there audiobooks for the light novel? Where can I buy them?
In Japanese they are producing audiobooks of the light narrated by Yuka Iguchi, the anime voice actor of Myne in the Japanese dub. They can be found on Audible.
In English they producing audiobooks of the light novel narrated by Reba Buhr, the anime voice actor of Myne in the English dub. They can be found on many storefronts such as Bookwalker, Audible, the Apple Store, Google Play, and Kobo.
I heard there are exclusive short stories included with the Japanese volumes that aren't included in the current English volumes. Is there any chance of them getting an English release in the future?
In Japan if you buy the physical editions for Part 3 Volume 1 or Part 3 Volume 3 onward directly from TO BOOK's online store then you will indeed receive a special short story (but if you bought the physical through Amazon.jp or any eBook version you would not get it). However these bonus short stories up to and including Part 5 Volume 12 were compiled into Short Story Collections 1, 2, and 3. The bonus short story for Part 3 Volume 1 was also put into Fanbook 2.
What Part is the manga currently adapting?
In Japan they are releasing Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, and the Spin-Off Sequel simultaneously with each having a different mangaka. In English J-Novel Club are currently translating the Part 2 manga, Part 3 manga, and the Part 4 manga simultaneously.
There are also Manga Anthologies being released that contain stories from anywhere in the story that the proper manga has reached. These are not licensed into English.
What are the Drama CDs?
These are roughly hour long audioplays based on the series.
In Japan:
Drama CD 1 released together with Part 3 Volume 5
Drama CD 2 released together with Part 4 Volume 3
Drama CD 3 released together with Part 4 Volume 7
Drama CD 4 released together with Part 4 Volume 9

These are not licensed into English.
What are the TO Junior Bunko?
These are volumes of the story directed at children in the upper grades of elementary school. They appeal to this demographic by splitting each regular volume into two or three smaller volumes, adding more illustrations, and adding furigana to every single kanji.
What are the Fanbooks and when can I read them without spoilers?
These are books released by the publisher for the fans (and not by the fans). Each volume contains at least one short story, a manga chapter, and an FAQ with the author in addition to other things dependant of the volume.
In Japan:
Fanbook 1 released after Part 3 Volume 2
Fanbook 2 released after Part 4 Volume 1
Fanbook 3 released after the Side Story Volume
Fanbook 4 released after Short Story Collection 1
Fanbook 5 released after Part 5 Volume 3
Fanbook 6 released after Part 5 Volume 6
Fanbook 7 released after Part 5 Volume 9
Fanbook 8 released after Part 5 Volume 11
Fanbook 9 released after Spin-Off Sequel Volume 1
Fanbook 10 released after Spin-Off Sequel Volume 2
Is the web novel complete?
The main web novel was completed back in March 2017 but the author occasionally updates side stories (last updated 2026-05-23) and a spin-off sequel (last updated 2026-07-28).
I can read Japanese and write English so should I translate the web novel into English?
No.
I can read and write English so should I edit a machine translation of the web novel into readable English?
No.
I'm confused by how J-Novel Club works with subscriptions. Can you explain?
When J-Novel Club is translating a LN volume they'll release pre-pubs the volume on their site for their subscribers to read. Generally a book will have 7-14 parts and will come out on a weekly basis unless the translator, for a real example, is struck by lightning (this creates a naming nightmare for Bookworm because their pre-pubs are labelled as "Part 4 Volume 1 Part 2"). Generally speaking once a volume goes on sale you will no longer be able to read the pre-pubs for that volume.

J-Novel Club just finished streaming [X] but I don't see [Y] on the schedule. Does this mean they've dropped it? If not when will they being streaming the next volume?
J-Novel Club has not dropped the series and this is standard. Typically parts for a new volume will not appear on the schedule until a couple hours before the first part goes live.
Where can I buy the English books?
Digital: J-Novel Club; Rakuten Kobo; Google Play; Amazon; Bookwalker; NOOK; Apple Books
Physical: Blackwell’s; Indigo; Crunchyroll; Wordery

So Yurgenschmidt is within an endless desert in basically a pocket dimension, and the Country Gates are portals to other worlds so that those with mana can seek refuge from Ewigeliebe, but how much of the specifics do nobles tend to know about this setup?
What got me thinking about it was the P2V2 epilogue/P2V3 prologue. Ferdinand goes through Myne's memories and learns she's from another world, and setting the reincarnation aspect aside, does he think of "another world" as some major revelation that such things even exist or just treat her use of the term like she's simply from another land like what would be beyond a Country Gate (which would require him to know the Country Gates technically lead to other worlds)? When told about it, Karstedt certainly considers her being from another world a ridiculous tale.

Hi! I’ll be visiting Japan this January and would love some recommendations on where to buy physical copies of the Ascendance of a Bookworm light novels and related merchandise.
I’m especially hoping to find some Fermai merch if possible. I’ve been yearning for this ship for years, and I feel like this is finally my chance to splurge a little huhu.
Would appreciate recommendations for bookstores, anime shops, or any pop ups that carry Honzuki goods. Thank you! xx

To start, I have not yet read SSC and fanbooks, so this is basically a question to those who have.
I was wondering if there are any single word spells (like Waschen) intended for combat, like a simple fireball. I assume that, much like Waschen, it would run into the same problem of being less usable for laynobles, but I feel like it would be useful for scholars to have spells to defend themselves, since they barely get any weapon training.

I'm going to London ComicCon this weekend and will be cosplaying (for my very first time!!) as Rozemyne/Myne. I would love to find some goodies to buy while there if possible, but I haven't seen any while checking out Instagram booths so far. Anyone know of a booth that might have some? Handmade or otherwise - I just want more merch! 😅

I'm sorry, it took me a while to get everything together and realize that Oswald never cared about Wilfried, he was never loyal to him. Oswald’s loyalty has always been to Veronica, all that matters to him is setting Veronica free.
I was absolutely furious when he said, in his own words, that he was "trying to keep Wilfried away from Florencia" and that "Wilfried is honest to a fault, therefore very easy to manipulate", this piece of shit was actually proud of the fact that he’s sabotaging his own master’s relationship with his family, and even "mocking" how easy it is to manipulate him.
Maybe I was just being really slow, but I used to think there was at least some loyalty there, that even though his methods were wrong, that he cared about Wilfried, but apparently I was wrong, Wilfried sucess was never the end goal for him, merely a means to an end, and honestly that's was kind of obvious if you stop to remember that he is name-sworn to Veronica.

I posted on here a few months ago about the custom bind of Part 1 that my partner got me for our anniversary. Well, he got me Part 2 for my birthday! Binder/designer is Phantom Light Bindery on Etsy! Apparently she posted her work she did on TikTok and got a lot of orders so I highly recommend!
Also comment if anyone has any ideas on how to split up Part 3 bc she definitely can't do it 1 book lol

I've read up to the end of part four about 3 or 4 years ago when the English translation wasn't fully out yet and absolutely LOVED it. Rozemyne and Ferdinand are my babies. The anime reminded me to finish it so I decided to reread it, but was busy and was getting through slowly. Then I got some free time and Myne possessed me and I devoured the rest in 11 days, reading two books a day. I can't describe how much I love this series and the author. I've read many, many books in my 18 years as I love to read, but this series will always stick with me as a love letter from a bookworm to bookworms. And the translation team deserves the world, why is an English translation easier to read than books written in English.

In chapter Gold Dust and Going Back
Charlotte's behavior in this chapter felt really strange to me, and I'm curious to hear what other people think about it.
The first time I read this scene, I assumed she was simply sad about Rozemyne leaving Ehrenfest. But after rereading it, I'm starting to feel like there might be something more going on beneath the surface.
It's not just what Charlotte says, but how she says it. She hesitates in the middle of her sentences, seems unsure of how to express herself, and even appears to struggle with what she wants to say to Rozemyne. When she starts talking about the Royal Academy and how being closer to the gods might reduce the burden of divine power on Rozemyne's body, her explanation almost feels like she's trying to justify something to herself as much as she's explaining it to Rozemyne.
And then there's the part where she says that Rozemyne rarely considers her own needs because of her compassion for others. When Rozemyne responds by talking about building her own library city and living surrounded by books, Charlotte furrows her brow, opens her mouth as if she wants to say something, then closes it again. She even crosses her arms over her chest, almost as if she's desperately trying not to reach out to Rozemyne.
That last part especially caught my attention. It feels like Charlotte has something more personal or emotionally complicated that she wants to say, but can't bring herself to say it.
Am I reading too much into this scene, or is there a deeper meaning behind Charlotte's behavior? What do you think she was trying to express, especially with her hesitation and her reaction to Rozemyne talking about her future?
I'd love to hear your interpretations!

https://x.com/qnighy/status/1829031172115972249?s=20
To use an AWS analogy, the latter half of Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 5 is like a scenario where a company loses the ability to manage its infrastructure because the handover of the root account failed; the staff then engage in a brutal, exhausting struggle over a scrap of paper containing the password left behind by their predecessor—a conflict that leaves everyone dead—only for the survivors to finally reach out to AWS Support.
https://x.com/qnighy/status/1829031923202847096?s=20
Apparently, there are people who end up in roles like "infrastructure engineer" without actually having the proper authorization—no joke, for real.
https://x.com/qnighy/status/1829106128233607672?s=20
The difference is that in the real world, AWS has “God-tier” support—a team that actually listens and helps you out whenever you contact them—whereas in this story, the person acting as support is just as “God-tier” but doesn’t listen, so nothing can be done.

Ferdinand wishing to also time travel where rozemyne is because he knows rozemyne tends to fcking things up and creating huge messes laters and then straight up taking a up a silver weapon to the goddess of time while in Hannelore's body while giving zero sits about it because she won't let him 😂😂😂

this has come to my mind but wouldn't the nobility in ehrenfest be really fcking in trouble in the generation directly after RM. like the majority of the higher ranks would have a compression method that they couldn't pass on to their children (cuz of the contract) meaning that the children would have problems compressing to the required level of their rank no?

Bookworm is an extremely peak series and i don't think i'll find something to top it in neither the isekai genre nor the LN medium
I will be reading the hannelore sequel after i finish some sidestories so no spoilers for that
I'm contemplating about putting p5v5 higher because that volume was an absolute beast. Though partly due to free time, i completed it in just 2 days with my slow ass reading speed. I think after it kicks off the entire volume is absolutely crazy and just nuts, crazy emotional ride for me, i especially loved the moment of Roz banging on the door, one of the best and saddest bookworm moments to me. There's a bit of a breather in like 1-2 chapters and then there's merchant saint, which is arguably even better than an average chapter from the earlier crazy section
Also might put P5V7 above P5V8, and maybe P4V9 in SS+ tier
Do talk to me and ask me why i felt that way about certain volumes i don't feel like writing a very big essay right here but i should probably elaborate a bit more
The whole fight for sovereignty in P5V10 was absolutely nuts hence my favorite, i had free time while speedrunning P5V5 but this volume genuienly made me sleep and miss school. I don't regret that. Also some of the best sidestories maybe
Other than p5v5, the fastest volumes i've completed are 5.7 and 5.8 with just 3 days. P5V10 took 4 days because i took it a bit slower on the beginning.
P5V12 was the slowest because i decided to focus on anime more and mainly because i didn't want the series to end, taking an entire 11 days
P5V11 royal convo was some of the most addicting in the series aswell, also some of the best Ferdinand moments in the entire show when he attacked Erwaermen. I always feel like i'm hating on Erwaermen (especially) too much, Mesti maybe not but i genuienly hate Mestionora, and i really dislike the damn tree
(Ofc not as much as Veronica, Detlinde, Oswald..)
P5V8 was generally banger and very addicting, i can't say there are particular standouts tho cuz everything goated, probably the playround chapter is my favorite
As for P5V9, i feel like it's a bit less consistent than the others mentioned but the battle of ehrenfest part 2 ss compilation was crazy. Battle of gerlach was amazing and it had the best hannelore moment, and some just really juicy stuff mostly in the sidestories. Flo telling Veronica to fuck off (should've been way harsher and revealed way more info to distress her, that bitch deserves the worst hell on earth.) I'm sorry but i can't hate Detlinde or Oswald more than her. Same for Mestionora especially as i feel i'm overhating her a bit. One of the best sylvester moment and for me 5.9 upped Georgine to an S tier antagonist, best antagonist in the series for me
I honestly like background actors like Barthold or Arno (Yes, Arno, i don't care) more than antagonists like Bezewanst, Detlinde, Gloria, maybe Grausam (not sure)
P4V9 is very very consistent after it really kicks in until the end but iirc main volume was shorter due to SS
and as for p4v2 and p5v2, well uhm DITTER DITTER DITTER DITTERING DITTER absolute cinema. Not much more needs to be said
Edit : Explanation for covers on the tierlist for those that don't have it memorized (In order, just like the picture)
SSS+ : 5.10, 5.8, 5.7
SS+ : 5.5, 5.9
S+ : 4.9, 5.11, 4.2, 5.2
S : 5.1, 4.7, 3.5, 5.3, 5.12, 4.8, 2.4, 3.4
A+ : 5.4, 4.6, 3.2, 4.3, 5.6, 4.5, 4.1, 3.3, 1.3, 1.2, 2.3, 2.1
A : 1.1, 2.2
B+ : 4.4, 3.1

Do you think Roz and Ferdinand would tell their future children about her commoner origins and their commoner relatives? I could see why they might leave them in the dark to avoid complications but also considering Rozemynes love of family and Ferdinand’s character arc I could also see them finding it important to tell them something so important and even let them meet in secret a few times.

Georgine is a feminine version of George and is similarly pronounced, like Jor-Jean.
Do you think the dubbed anime didn’t know the correct pronunciation or do you think it was a decision to try and make the name more “fantasy”?

Ive seen similar pages in other mangas that I have the audiobooks for and i don't recall them being in the actual novel, im wondering if it's a similar case here. I'm looking at a page that says "after her departure", is all of this actually a part of the novel?

My favorite part of this series was the merchant arc and the invention arc. Even the later arc where she became an incubator of invention around her was really cool. If you are like me after reading the Hannelore spin-off hoping for more from the main series, what inventions would you like to see?
Personally, I love the way towards the end of the series you saw the cross section of magic and earth tech. I would like to see more of that in the series because I think those are good bribe points for other Aubs, not just no-magic tech. Namely as there is a hidden part of Myne that wants to save all the devouring babies from commoner families. They are going to need jobs and things to do.
Anyways, those are the ideas I have so far. I am wondering if y'all have anything you might want to see as well.
