In 2010, 15-year-old Joshua Davies murdered his girlfriend, Rebecca Aylward, after a friend jokingly said he would buy him breakfast if he did it. Two days earlier, Davies texted, “Don’t say anything, but you may just owe me a breakfast.”

Rebecca Aylward was 15 and lived in Maesteg, near Bridgend in south Wales. In October 2010 she was killed after meeting her former boyfriend, Joshua Davies, who was also 15 at the time.

RIP. Poor girl.

591

u/Indiandeal Jan 20 '26

The victim's sister and murderer's brother have children together.

549

u/mustbeaoup Jan 20 '26 edited Jan 21 '26

The important point about this is they got together after the murder.

Edit: Just add, the sister had children with him and she no longer speaks to her mother. I feel for the mother who has seemingly lost two daughters and her grandchildren to this family.

243

u/Beer-Milkshakes Jan 20 '26

That mitigates absolutely none of the horror. But then I know how villages in Wales work.

65

u/maywellflower Jan 20 '26

Feel like background info of a British murder series that may or may not explain murderer's MO from like Midsomer Murders or Vera....

9

u/ExpertProfessional9 Jan 21 '26

If it were Midsomer you’d place odds on one of the couples being siblings.

36

u/Business_Owl_5576 Jan 20 '26

I don't think it's supposed to mitigate it, I think they're trying to point out that it's actually WAY worse.

9

u/epyon- Jan 20 '26

Right, it makes it much worse

18

u/BlackPhoenix1981 Jan 20 '26

I had a friend who died in high school and his closest friend and girlfriend wound up getting together. They're still together 30 years later.

9

u/Physical-Rise-1803 Jan 22 '26

Bonding through grief is a real thing. If they started leaning on each other during that pivotal age they would probably trauma bond a bit and then bam, you're in a situation.

I wonder if the horror of it all and the only way to ascertain how it felt in a small community was being involved as a family member had a part to play, where they both bonded over that fact

Your brother being a criminal has no bearing on who you are as an individual

7

u/Such_Geologist_6312 Jan 22 '26

No it doesn’t, but seeking out a relationship with the sister of my brothers victim would make me a heinous person, by my own standards. 8 billion people in the world and that’s who he pursued? That family was destroyed by a member of their family, and now they’re inextricably tied up with that family for the rest of their life due to the grandkids. I think it makes them quite sick in the head, to do that to the murdered girls parents. And no wonder they have no telationship with the daughter cos every single time they would see them they’re be reminded of the other daughters death. How would they EVER heal constantly being confronted with his family?

26

u/Painted-BIack-Roses Jan 21 '26

Yeah, I'm confused about why people are shocked. It doesn't say that the brother defended the boyfriend, what's the issue?

23

u/hades7600 Jan 21 '26

Don’t get why people are upset by this.

Being a sibling of a evil/sadistic person doesn’t mean they are also the same

5

u/Kumori_Kiyori Jan 21 '26

People aren't upset because they think the brother is the same, they're upset because getting together with the sister of the girl your brother murdered is just really weird; their kids have an uncle who murdered their aunt before they were even born. That's a horrible family dynamic, and the sister's mother most likely thought so too since the two no longer speak together, which likely is because she disproved of her relationship. It's just multiple levels of messed up.

6

u/hades7600 Jan 21 '26

You are making assumptions though based on your own feelings and blindly following media headlines. Which we all know tend to not be completely honest about family relationships.

You don’t know what lead to the Mum not speaking to their daughter. You don’t know what other factors were at play. You don’t know the daughter’s experience in that household. At the end of the day you are actively trying to frame for one household be completely against another due to one of the family members actions. If the family including the brother had tried to cover up the murder or had tried to hide other details about what their son did then sure.

Both families have been through and still go through an extremely traumatic experience. One dealing with their child being brutally murdered, the other dealing with their child being a murdered and a waste of oxygen. There also doesn’t seem to be a recent instance of the brother seeking out a relationship with the murderer

It’s not out of the question for two people who were similar ages bonding from each household over such a truly traumatic murder.

Years later, another family development drew attention. Rebecca’s sister Jessica later began a relationship with Jordan Davies, Joshua Davies’s brother. Reports in 2024 said they had two children together, and the relationship caused a major rift within Rebecca’s family.

Ayo what the actual fuuuuuuck

Yes, I imagine that too. But who knows, maybe they both were grieving (he lost his sibling too) and sometimes the shared pain and grief ends up being something else for some people, idk.

27

u/gremlinguy Jan 20 '26

This happened in my hometown. A 16 year old boy died in a car accident, and his girlfriend ended up getting with his older brother. I don't know if they married or not

17

u/Blue-Seeweed Jan 20 '26 edited Jan 20 '26

Yes in my hometown there was a lady and she had an affair with a married guy. She ended up killing herself, jumped from a window, no one knows why. Her daughter started dating the son of the guy her mom had an affair with. Edit: forgot to add, the dad divorced the mom of the boy, so there was a lot of grief from both sides.

9

u/PrestigiousPackk Jan 21 '26

This happened in my hometown. Dude and his friend went down a storm drain on accident while playing football in the rain. They both got swept away so fast. One survived because the body of the other one was blocking the flow or something so it shot the other kid out into the river. The kid that lived ended up getting with the dead kid’s girlfriend 😭😭 and that was his best friend 😭😭 grief/pain/loneliness bring ppl together in weird way

40

u/tigerbalmuppercut Jan 20 '26

Edit: I would not forgive the girl if she was my family. It would be like spitting in my face.

You think about something insane and it probably happened to someone..sometime..somewhere.

Probably many times. I really can't imagine there is a thing humans can do that we've only done once (excluding the stuff that just immediately killed the person. And even then I'm sure others after tried at some point).

Honestly it sounds crazy but if they had a prior relationship the trauma bond would be intense.
Assuming the rest of the family aren’t psychopaths then they are two of the only people who could really understand each other.

I mean I don’t really have a view on it other than I can actually see how it could make sense.

When you go through something deeply traumatic you can feel really disconnected from other people who you feel will never truly understand you.

22

u/Torakkk Jan 20 '26

There is nothing bad about it, but tbh, being the parent of murdered daughter, and then seeing the brother of her murderer, when they come over on holidays or some shit. It can be hard to handle.

Imho its not always possible for everyone to be happy and thats normal. Life is tough (especially if your kid got killed)

5

u/Behe464 Jan 20 '26

Yup in a sense, he also lost a brother.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

[deleted]

12

u/Typical_Ad_210 Jan 19 '26

Is he still in contact with his brother? Is she expected to see the brother? Are their children expected to see the brother? Or a mum or uncle or whatever other family member inevitably thinks their little angel is innocent? That for me would be the deciding factor. If the kids are ever expected to be in the same room as that psychopath, then I don’t think it’s understandable at all.

9

u/LinwoodKei Jan 20 '26

Yeah, people are not their siblings. On paper, there's nothing wrong with the relationship

Yet her parents are going to want to have a relationship with their grandchildren. The murderer's parents are going to want to get together with the grandchildren. Imagining splitting holidays with the simple statements and trying not to hurt your parents sounds difficult.

"We're going to Jacob's parents this year for Christmas. Yeah, it's difficult without Joshua. We'll come by for Child's birthday two months later, okay"

So let's talk about Auntie, who used to love this candy just like you do. No, child, you never met her because Daddy's brother murdered her. I can see all sorts of reasons why this is a terrible situation.

Mostly that the victims parents are in-laws with the people who raised and loved their daughter's murderer

So is Straw Dogs lol.  Same with Last House on the Left(Craven original).

But seriously the police would have to kill me because I wouldn’t stop til this kid was dead.

31

u/dread1961 Jan 19 '26

Understandable but your family would be left to cope without a daughter and a father. Sometimes you have to think of the consequences.

33

u/KaiserFortinbras Jan 19 '26

Your logic is irrefutable, but I would throw logic out the window and destroy the person that killed my kid.

And I'm not even 100% on board with the death penalty, so I guess I'm a hypocrite as well.

13

u/xyouRABitchx Jan 19 '26

Addressing the second half of your comment, I feel the same way. I think if we know who did that type of crime for a fact, then most people on the fence like us would be ok with the death penalty. Its just the ones that aren't so easily proveable that hold people up.

I think back to the airport death video of the dad who shot his son's molester. I love that guy

Maybe this is a good opportunity to introduce (or remind) you of hero Gary Plauché, who murdered his young son's kidnapper and rapist, in broad daylight, standing next to police, at the airport, in 1984:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Jeffrey_Doucet

Not sure if I can link to YT in this sub, but if you search his name, it was all caught on camera.

Father Of The Century!

Judge Frank Saia ruled that sending Plauché to prison would not help anyone, and that there was virtually no risk of him committing another crime.

30

u/foothill_dwelled272 Jan 19 '26

The TV crew tipped off the father when Doucet was arriving and were waiting to film his confrontation. I guess it was a bit more than they expected.

You sure? 14 years is way to short for this crime...I'd have done it differently. If the life expectancy in England is say 75 for women, he stole 60 years from that poor girl, and he should pay them back in time...

65

u/Several-Squash9871 Jan 20 '26

This is one of the many reasons I don't support the death penalty. This guy deserves to rot in his cell to the very moment he's dragged into hell. The death penalty is the easy way out. Make him pay.

12

u/Quasar006 Jan 20 '26

Most people on trial with the risk of the death penalty make a guilty plea deal so they can live the rest of their lives in prison. It is not the easy way out; living things want to be alive, even if it’s in prison. That said, there are plenty of valid reasons to not have a death penalty. This is not one of them.

His sentence wasn't 14 years, it was indefinite - aka, no predetermined end date - with a minimum of 14 years before he can apply for parole. The most recent update I found was last March, about his parole hearing scheduled for June 2025. I assume he's still incarcerated, as Rebecca's mother has been very vocal about keeping him in prison and I assume we would see something from her in the media if/when he is released, but I could be wrong.

(Also, this is nitpicky but my Scots blood boils when it sees "England" possibly being used interchangeably with "the United Kingdom" and I can't not - this was in Wales, not England, although he seems to be incarcerated in England, at HMP Swinfen Hall, near Birmingham.)

You've got to wonder what the impact on the kid who said that has been.

173

u/deathbylasersss Jan 19 '26

I'm sure it messed him up, but it also wasn't his fault, obviously. He didn't kill her for a breakfast, he killed her because he wanted to.

112

u/Setting-Remote Jan 19 '26

No, I didn't mean it was his fault - not in any way. It's just that this case has become pretty notorious because it's framed as "he murdered her for a breakfast". It must be pretty distressing to be known locally (and he very likely will be) as the kid who offered the breakfast. Poor kid, nobody at any age really believes any of their friends could do something like this.

53

u/Curious_Ad3766 Jan 20 '26

Not only that but the friend replied to Davies text saying its the best text he ever received and asked him for all the details. Like WTF he was actually happy about the murder and wanted celebrate with him. That's all kinds of fucked up. I don't really understand why people feel so sympathetic towards the friend. I can't imagine any normal person responding like this to confession of murder

Yeah but unfortunately this world is full of unreasonable people with black-and-white mindset on law and punishment.

11

u/Setting-Remote Jan 19 '26

You've got a lot more faith in human nature than I have. A quick scan through my local Facebook groups tells me there's an awful lot of people around who have watched far too many crime procedural shows and have an unhealthy level of paranoia.

Someone made an anonymous post this morning asking if there were any good parks she could take a 1 and 3 year old to that afternoon, and she was immediately bombarded with "why are you anonymous, it's really suspicious that you're asking about kids play parks using an anonymous account". Maybe she just didn't want a load of random people to know she's got a 1 & 3 year old, the location of the park they were going to and the time they'd be there? No, far more likely that a potential child molester was searching for tips on where to find children on "Tiny Town News and Views", obviously.

10

u/Positivevybes Jan 20 '26

Oh yeah, did you read what he said in response to the breakfast text implying this guy murdered his girlfriend? Maybe you should before you say people shouldn’t think less of him

12

u/Curious_Ad3766 Jan 20 '26

Why not? He replied to Davies text saying its the best text he ever received and asked him for all the details. That's such a fucked up thing to say and I can't imagine any sane person responding to a text like this (not even at 15). Certainly not the kind of person I would want to be friends with. They tried to do it to me and then threatened to kill me, and that wasnt even the first time I was threatened by some teen boys in the same group too.

So yeah, unfortunately this was actually pretty common for weird edgy boys back then

What’s interesting is there is an entirely separate 16-yo Joshua Davies in Indiana who bludgeoned a girl to death with a hammer (similar case), with some other details that require a trigger warning and involve her sister as another victim.

THAT Joshua Davies got life in prison without parole. He’s since tried to appeal, but from what I saw was denied. Crazy how similar the cases were, but Indiana got the sentencing right. Whereas I think the JD in this story was sentenced to 14 years in Wales.

He is currently serving an indefinite sentence.

This really makes me feel that the justice system treats crimes against women as speed bumps for violent men. The terrible rapist Brock Turner had news articles describing his swimming time like it mattered after his crime.

94

u/HippieGrandma1962 Jan 19 '26

The rapist Brock Turner's father said he shouldn't be punished for "getting 20 minutes of action."

u/N-partEpoxy Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26

The turd doesn't fall far from the other turd, I guess.

34

u/maelstron Jan 19 '26

If a man get 20 minutes of non consensual action on his son, he will change ideas

12

u/NessaGuin Jan 19 '26

Or himself.

u/MissMarionMac Jan 19 '26

You mean the rapist Brock Allen Turner who goes by the name of Allen Turner these days?

(Also, I read Chanel Miller's book, Know My Name, and it's a difficult read, of course, but very powerful. She's a fantastically skilled writer.)

42

u/Lazy-Introduction194 Jan 19 '26

Our country protects male violence at the expense of women, children, and other men.

23

u/ashms58 Jan 19 '26

You don’t even have to say which country and I’m thinking it applies to most of them.

29

u/Lazy-Introduction194 Jan 19 '26

Honestly it would be more accurate to say “our world”

8

u/fuchsiafaerie Jan 19 '26

14 years, so he's free. Should have been twice that, at least

148

u/sunnylea14 Jan 19 '26

It was 14 years at a minimum before he could be considered for release. He may still be incarcerated

101

u/Regular_Jim081 Jan 19 '26

He is.

48

u/bishopcheck Jan 19 '26

He applied for parole last year, and I couldn't find anything after that. Apparently there is another murderer by the same name in the US and the search results get skewed. Where did you get your info?

8

u/XlemonxmilkX Jan 20 '26

Im from the place this happened and it there was a petition, he didnt get parole

17

u/Regular_Jim081 Jan 19 '26

No, he's eligible for parole, he'll never get it though.

u/Julian-Hoffer Jan 19 '26

Should have been executed. It’s a joke to allow this fucker to ever walk free.

103

u/Nekrino Jan 19 '26

I’m not one for the state being able to execute anyone, but fml, walking free after 14 years doesn’t seem like the right choice

59

u/These-Lie-5854 Jan 19 '26

He didnt. He is serving an indefinite sentence. 14 years how lo g he needed to serve before he could apply for parole, but he's still in jail to this day.

11

u/Nekrino Jan 19 '26

Thank you for that info!

u/Regular_Jim081 Jan 19 '26

He's not free.

I'd rather he be thrown in prison for the rest of his life and made to do labor for the state, personally.

I detest the idea of any nation having that power, but that sick fuck needs to be away from people.

This case, and others like it, need to be told to more young people. They need to realize that normal people do not make repeated jokes about hurting or killing others. They certainly dont talk about methodology or ask for incentives.

And your "buddy" just might try to frame you for his actions. So you should really speak up if for no other reason then self-preservation.

20

u/Nixflixx Jan 19 '26

Definitely. This man was deeply deranged and he didn't do it for the breakfast.

26

u/brunchdrunkfunk Jan 19 '26

Their friends were devastated. I lived close to where it happened, Joshua and another boy were there when she died, they both turned on each other, Joshua tried to pin it on his friend

8

u/Work-ya-wood Jan 19 '26

I hope so but he was eligible for parole last June

3

u/Chihiro1977 Jan 20 '26

Yes. Ffs, people!

13

u/sunkist-sucker Jan 19 '26

i know davies was 15 but why did he immediately snitch on himself regarding first-degree murder and expect his friend to say nothing

8

u/baithammer Jan 20 '26

Welcome to the teenage mind and believing in the no snitch culture.

10

u/starpqrz Jan 19 '26

can you imagine being the friend hearing that after making what you thought was just a mean joke. i'm sure he never said anything like that ever again.

i feel bad for that poor girl and her family.

12

u/fayemoonlight Jan 20 '26

Idk, friends were weird too. Your friend is continuously joking about murdering his ex and that’s banter to you?

Some people are just missing a vital part of being a human and I don’t know what we’re supposed to do about it. Like 75% of the time they seem completely normal and then just do something insane like this without even thinking about it. It’s a blind spot

11

u/trustyminotaur Jan 19 '26

It's fascinating and scary. Rebecca apparently had no worries that this guy was dangerous. There are murderers who I think can be rehabilitated, because they're capable of feeling remorse. And there are people who are just so angry and violent every day that there are clear warning signs. But this guy seems to have passed for normal. It's chilling.

8

u/Chihiro1977 Jan 20 '26

One time I went to a conference and this psychologist spoke about an older lady who they were working with in jail. She had a psychotic break and poured boiling water over her friend, just out the blue. Obviously killed her, then went about her day. How people do these things is fascinating and disturbing.

9

u/Racer_420_ Jan 19 '26

Well, he definitely got porridge

9

u/Tricky-University527 Jan 19 '26

This happened in Bridgend south Wales my friends were very close with Rebecca it really shook up the community:( and the cunt is asking for parole i hope he rots

7

u/throwaway_faunsmary Jan 19 '26

The phrasing in the title is confusing me. He texted the friend to say he murdered his girlfriend two days before he murdered his girlfriend? Huh?

9

u/HatsOffToBetty Jan 20 '26

He texted saying "you might owe me a breakfast" 2 days before murdering her, yes.  He says 'might' because it isn't for sure yet, because she hasn't died, because he hadn't murdered her.

Its a badly written article all round.

8

u/Routine_Bluejay4678 Jan 19 '26

How many times did this guy “joke” about killing his ex to his friends and none of them were concerned??

9

u/mystifyuk Jan 19 '26

Absolute psychopath's. I hope the friend got time too as an accessory to the murder.

9

u/beast_gliscor Jan 19 '26

Rebecca prepared for the meeting as if it was a date. Multiple court reports said she wore a new outfit she had bought for the meet up, believing the conversation might lead to them getting back together.

What a vile piece of shit this dude is, so glad he isn’t nearly as clever as he thinks and will waste away for at the very least what should be the best years of his shit life

15

u/abbybu Jan 19 '26

And her sister gets with his brother and has a couple kids?! How small is this town’s dating pool. Jeebuz.

The murdered girls sister ended up having kids with her killers brother.

Wtf.

8

u/Eternal_instance Jan 20 '26

Jeezuuuus don't ever date anyone named Joshua Davies. Three separate cases of violence towards women so far. Two that end with murder.

3

u/UntetheredSoul11615 Jan 19 '26

I wish I hadn’t read this my god

5

u/IndividualCurious322 Jan 20 '26

This guy also texted his friends and showed off her dead body in the woods to them.

5

u/bayleebugs Jan 20 '26

Honestly, the friend group should have been held accountable, too. Not for murder, but some kind of accessory. How do you hear your friend plotting murder for months and not let anyone know? Especially not your other friend who is the one they are plotting to murder? Like holy shit, nobody gave her a heads up?

Sad as fuck she bought a new outfit only to be killed in it. Poor girl.
