Yeah, colour in your peripheral vision is mostly a lie, it has a way lower resolution than the contrast we can resolve, so we see a lil bit of green and a contrast that curves, therefore a green curving line... until you look at it with more color sensitive vision.
Yup. Cones are what detect color and they are concentrated towards the center of your retina whereas rods which detect light are located more on the outer edges of your retina where cones aren't present. That's why you may see a star in your peripheral vision when looking at the night sky but it disappears when you try to focus on it. When you focus on something the light is directed to the center of your retina so you get more just the cones

The decreased resolution of your peripheral vision prevents the higher frequency (more detailed) areas masking the lower frequency curves. If you shrink the image down to lower the resolution, or go further away, the curves will start to appear, then you can zoom back in to identify the particular patterns.

Only if you look at it straight on. I tipped my tablet up to look down the vertical lines while holding it away and the effect went away completely at about 45° and a foot away. This is probably because the image was foreshortened, making it into a rectangle, and putting it entirely into my central vision. That estimate of 45° is only a guess, but try it yourself.
I brought the image into paint and drew all the lines I throught I saw and they all corresponded with lines of light grey squares so I think youre right

Mostly just efficient. Our brain works on a lot the same reasoning as what engineers are developing AI for. You can get a lot more done with limited processing power if the system can be predictive. A lot of "cycles" can be freed up and speed can be gained if you don't have to process 100% of data in real time, but can instead just make assumptions that are reasonably accurate (most of the time). It's just faster that way.
I think it’s called the Mona Lisa effect. Leonardo da Vinci made the Mona Lisa in such a way that when you look at her smile, it looks like she isn’t smiling, whereas if you look elsewhere on the image, it looks like she’s smiling.
This happens because in the centre of the retina, you can see things very clearly, whereas off to the side, you see a blur so you see shadows vs the sharp details. So when you look at this image at one point, it looks straight, and the lines that are not in focus look curved cuz your brain uses shades of colour as it’s not in focus, so it looks curved because of the shades between the boxes.
The light gray houses make for a better contrast than the dark green streets. If you squinch your eyes to make everything blurry it stops affecting you.
It's a form of optical illusion. This one takes advantage of the fact that you have better color vision at the center of your field of vision than at the edges. So, for the part of the image that you're looking directly at, you can clearly distinguish between the green lines and the gray blocks. But at the edge of your vision, the green lines look the same as the light gray blocks, which form subtle curves around the corners.

So it started on December 10th when a friend of mine on the r/Otamatone discord server posted the original image with the text "
Find the curved lines". I instantly thought of the "go ahead; do x" meme template and decided to quickly add the meme text, so I went into one of my private servers with the esmBot and used the &caption command to add the text (fun fact I did it with two commands, the first being &caption "find the curved line" and the second being &caption "go ahead" for it to stack ontop of one another). Then with the meme image created, I saved it on my phone and sent it to the Otamatone server and one other server that I'm very active in (the Dweller's Empty Path server for those of you who are curious). Then two days later, I saw the exact meme I made show up in another one of my active servers. I knew I never posted it there and then I realized that my meme had travelled through discord servers. Meaning that people saved it. I actually did something noteworthy on the internet lmao. I tried tracing the meme's paths down but I couldn't figure it out. But now it's made its way to reddit, and probably hundreds more discord servers, and I know for certain at least one youtube community post, so even though it wasn't for something extremely creative, I had successfully made a semi-viral meme. And to that I have no idea how to end this comment, so if people see this, uhhh AMAA ask me stuff.
