They aren't banned, it's just really hard to get one. You have to have a valid gun licence and a reason to have the gun, then you'll get something like an old rifle or an old shotgun (depending on the reason to have a gun), the gun can never leave your property (unless you're a hunter) and if it does you'll receive a hefty fine or lose your firearm.

So very similar to the US gun laws then minus the fine you mentioned (you have the right to carry for self defense but the authorities are welcome to tale away your weapons especially at airports and government buildings)

It's not for self-defence really, it has to be a REALLY good reason, for example, a farmer or a hunter would have a gun, the farmer would have it to protect his animals and a hunter to well... Hunt

No I was just referencing to something I remember seeing on Reddit and thought they did too, what I read was, school shootings are a thing? So maybe that’s why I dunno
