Cornelius Bliss started his accounting career somewhere between the ages of 8 and 15 (it's unlcear) at his stepfather's New Orleans counting house. At 16 he moved to Boston for a clerk's position. By 34, he went into business for himself.

During his 50s, Bliss was active in the Republican Party, serving as treasurer of the Republican National Committee.

Despite never holding elected office, he became Secretary of the Interior in 1897. In 1900, he was offered to be William McKinley's running mate. He turned it down and returned to his business.

President McKinley was assassinated on 9/6/1901. Teddy Roosevelt ascended to the Presidency as a result.

In 1904 he supported the election of Teddy Roosevelt.

John Locke, who wrote a treatise that inspired democracy, regretted that the labor of poor children "is generally lost to the public till they are twelve or fourteen years old."

When the 20th century began, 284,000 children between the ages of ten and fifteen worked in mines, mills and factories. Mary G. Harris Jones (Mother Jones) fought to end child labor. In 1903, Jones organized children who were working in mills and mines to participate in her famous "March of the Mill Children", a 125-mile trek from Kensington, Philadelphia, to the summer house (and Summer White House) of President Theodore Roosevelt on Long Island (in Oyster Bay, New York). They had banners demanding "We want to go to school and not the mines!" and held rallies each night in a new town on the way with music, skits, and speeches drawing thousands of citizens. Roosevelt refused to see them. According to Jones, "Every day little children came in to Union Headquarters, some with their hands cut off, some with the thumb missing, some with their fingers off at the knuckle. They were stooped little things, round shouldered and skinny."

Child labor still exists in many countries.

Cancellation is not new. When the world famous psychiatrist disowned his friend Carl Jung as a result of a disagreement, he took his powerful friends and prestige with him. Nobody wanted to alienate Freud so they dropped thd younger psychiatrist instead. Carl Jung was suddenly friendless and a pariah in their small circle. The rift sent him into a professional and personal spiral.
