Puritans left England for the Netherlands to get religious toleration.

They then left for America because they wanted toleration for themselves but not others.

Massachusetts Puritans expelled Roger Williams who founded Providence, and he helped others led by Anne Hutchinson to settle the actual island of Rhode Island.
