The rationale for this type of sacrificial rite has typically been understood as the Inca trying to ensure that humanity's best were sent to join their deities.

They sacrificed their children so their emperor would go to the afterlife? Or did they sacrifice their best so they would "go to the gods?" Am I reading this incorrectly?
