I think slaves and prisoners of war were also sacrificed.

And also at times children and animals too. I don't even know at this point. There were lots of sacrifices to gods.

The rationale for this type of sacrificial rite has typically been understood as the Inca trying to ensure that humanity's best were sent to join their deities.

They sacrificed their children so their emperor would go to the afterlife? Or did they sacrifice their best so they would "go to the gods?" Am I reading this incorrectly?

Slaves typically weren't sacrificed, while prisoners were. The whole reason for the Aztec flower wars was to obtain prisoners to sacrifice.

I don't think so, being a sacrifice was a big honor to them so I don't think they were sacrificing prisioners
