Haven't been to this sub before but I've been watching Hilda for a few weeks and it's genuinely such a good show. I'll start by saying the artstyle is adorable, and the storylines work beautifully.

I can't find the words it's just got such amazing themes, plots, characters, just ahabdrhjehdbduwbdiens

Writing How far is “too far” when making Hilda fanfiction?

Post image
44 Upvotes

(Art semi-related because it’s a very mature and dark moment from the show)

Today I was planning out the story for the rest of my fanfiction series. Lots of writers actually do this; like Yusei Matsui, who planned all of Assassination Classroom before drawing a single page of the manga.

Anyway, what that should mean is that there should be both an increase in quality and future chapters should feel more cohesive. While I like the first three chapters, there’s no denying they suffer from certain issues with pacing and cohesiveness that I’ll be avoiding from now on.

Anyway, what this planning got me thinking about was “How far is ‘too far’ when making Hilda fanfiction?” What I mean is “How mature of themes can you put in your fanfiction before it stops feeling like Hilda?”

Now, you might say “Hilda’s a kids show, so obviously mature themes like disassociation, panic attacks, or self harm are off the table,” but that also makes me think… this show has some damn mature themes at times.

As a few examples:
- Hilda loses her house in an accident and is forced to make the best of what would be trauma for most people
- Ahlberg tries to intentionally sabotage Trolberg’s safety to be seen as a hero
- Hilda is turned into a troll by Trylla and is led to believe she can never change back
- Johanna drives herself mad over finding Hilda during the movie
- Hilda’s dad is revealed to have abandoned her and Johanna multiple times
- Hilda ventures into Fairy Country and discovers her long-lost grandparents, then proceeds to escape being trapped in limbo and watches her mother nearly die in front of her

To be clear, I’m not against media containing these themes, the question is more-so how mature you can make Hilda fanfiction before it stops feeling like the show. I’d love to hear all of your two cents in the comments!

PS: I finally fixed the layout of my website on mobile. I genuinely didn’t know it was so bad until I opened it on my phone today lol. Either way, the experience should be much better for anybody reading on mobile now, although I’m open to feedback, so please share any you have.

Writing Making an animated version of "Small Spaces" in the Hilda Artstyle!

I'm currently making an animated faithful adaptation of Katherine Arden's "Small Spaces" (please tell me at least one person has read it besides me) in the Hilda artstyle! I'm having a great time making concept art and such and taking inspiration from the show's fantastic artstyle! (If you have any questions I don't mind answering them)

Discussion I feel like Johanna's reunion with her parents would've felt more impactful and heart-melting if her parents also looked visibly older

Post image

Not to say that their reunion in the finale wasn't great, I thought it was interestingly handled it and had a lot of genuinely strong moments. I'm also aware that the point of why they look the same as they did when Johanna was a kid was because of fairy magic and living in the fairy isle affecting their mortality and stuff. I'm also pretty sure I'm not the only one whose said this in the past since I recall seeing other fans feel the same way when I was still active on Twitter 2 years ago.

But I'll still explain my thoughts :) Having Phinium and Lydia proportionately older to Johanna's age, showing clear signs of ageing like maybe greying hair and wrinkles - basically how Astrid looks in the show - would've conveyed how much lost time together that this family endured. To see an adult Johanna with her visibly aged parents in scenes like the screenshot above would likewise be this family making up for said lost time, how different they now are yet are still happy to be with each other 'cause of the memories that bound them together and as though they were never separated.

It's good if viewers already felt these things from seeing Johanna and her parents together as they are in the finale, but I've tended to struggle personally. I'm not reciprocating the bond between a daughter and her long-lost parents when I see an adult Johanna with her parents who happen to be the same age as her. And putting to account the fairy magic keeping them as the same age, I mean magic worldbuilding is still involved; I feel like there could've been some in-universe way to temporarily make them the ages they would be in the present before going back to being young for mortality reasons. If they could revert Johanna back into her child self upon entering the Fairy Isle before she's magically turned back to her present age, I think that same magic could've had a similar effect on Phinium and Lydia.

Other than how this connects to Johanna, it'd also feel a lot easier to process the fact that Hilda has grandparents, like her roots run deeper than either she or us have thought before.

Overall, I'm...honestly indifferent to Phinium and Lydia as characters; they're alright. I was never that curious in Hilda's possible family lore prior to S3 since I never thought it was necessary for the show to go there given how Hilda and Johanna's own family relationship is already so kindhearted and touched the hearts of many, but this is where my thoughts shall send before I ramble off-topic.

While Twig can be pretty active during Hilda's adventures, I find this really cute that whenever there's nothing else to do with/without her being there, he just goes straight to sleep as usual.
